Half that PR nightmare they experienced was the backlash they got from his firing. And let's not forget Adam "I'll make sure you'll be a starving unemployed bum" Fletcher who would go out of his way to ensure people can't get jobs at other companies because they hold views he doesn't like, even if they have no intention of repeating the same mistake. You're forgetting the part where he (unintentionally) created a PR nightmare for Google and made cooperation with many of his coworkers difficult to impossible in practice.
