It isn't my fault that being drunk turns you into a colossal prick, so why should I have to bear the consequences of that simply because you chose to temporary disable your inhibitions?

Septagon / Re: 3 Strikes, 3 Sets« on: December 24, 2014, 02:58:26 PM »
I think this should be moved to Sep7agon.
But, Sand, how would you feel about the idea of monitors being able to dole out "ultra-lite" bans of anywhere from 30 minutes to like two hours, in order to stop an immediate shit-flinging or undesirable behaviour, which isn't exceptionally serious? 9530
The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:55:45 PM »But that would just be a pretty pointless extra work. I'm not opposed to giving monitors more abilities and a better defined role, but it seems like a hassle and a delay to communicate what I do to the monitors so that they can further deliver the message to the members. Why not just let me write a quick comment that gives the person reporting a post immediate feedback. That's my concern too. I'm just concerned about the role of the monitors, to be honest. Whether or not they or the mods deliver the messages is relatively unimportant, but as long as we have the monitors lying around they may as well be able to do things. We could, for instance, allow them to censor posts or dole out "ultra-lite" bans consisting of about 30 minutes up to a couple of hours if a mod isn't around to deal with the situation properly, or some shit flinging needs to be stopped. 9531
The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:51:49 PM »Would it not be possible to create an auxiliary system alongside the report list, a sort of "response list" which doesn't necessarily need direct 1-to-1 communications between monitors and moderators?Regarding communication between the mods and members, I had a recent suggestion that basically included a response window with each report. Every mod dealing with a report would then provide a quick and anonymous response on what they did and why. Does anyone feel like this would be a good idea?Doesn't feel personal enough. 9532

I think - as long as we have the monitors - they should serve the role as communicators. You could modify such a system, and make it so moderators choose the response to be made and then the monitors "pick up" the various responses and personally deliver them to whichever user on behalf of the moderator. 9533
The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:45:40 PM »The ones I listed which didn't have explicitly political titles shouldn't be in Serious simply through their lack of actual, serious content. Just look at Comms' Assadists thread - it's just a bunch of Syrian Army propaganda. All right, all right. Those ones don't fit under what I'd consider politics/religion. Everything else you mentioned, I think could be chalked up pretty easily. And as for that last one, I mean, you made it, so I'm inclined not to count it."Russian fishermen catch squeaking alien and eat it"At least 13 of the threads currently on the front page of Serious would be moved under our model.Could you name a few? I'm honestly seeing nothing but political discussion. I guess my definition is just inherently broader. It may be political in character, but it doesn't have the necessary content to facilitate discussion. 9534

The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:34:03 PM »"Moving" everything but the religious/political discussions to Shitpost Central will not change anything. Serious is already very slow on activity as it is, and everything that's not a religious/political discussion tends to get moved already. I'm not sure what you guys are talking about. At least 13 of the threads currently on the front page of Serious would be moved under our model. 9536
The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:27:51 PM »So if you're suggesting moving everything but the religious and political discussions into the flood, I'm all for it. It would certainly raise the quality of the threads here, but I worry about how popular Serious would become when it only contains those two subjects...That's my concern too. Would it be possible to display both feeds on a single webpage? 9537
The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:19:44 PM »Which is exactly the problem. That, really, should be the remit of Serious: politics and religion. The fact that we don't have a clearly defined boundary between the two fora leads to the Flood being sapped of things which could promote decent discussion, because somebody thought it fight the ambiguous criteria for Serious.Right. Because a thread like that, and threads like many others that I've thought of, wouldn't belong in Serious under the current remit, but you'd have to be snorting coke from your own asshole to think the Flood is any safe place for it to be. So the only other option is to not post the thread at all. Aspects of the moderation and the ambiguous nature of the Serious board has led to the Flood becoming even more of a cesspool. While this thread, however, is proof that people can discuss things if it interests them in the Flood - it's quite clearly not enough. If I had to choose a direction for the moderation to go, it'd be stricter. At least initially, while the relationship between the Flood and Serious is sorted out. 9538
The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:18:14 PM »The site staff will (likely) be holding a poll to gauge which style of moderation the website would like to see -Strict, Lax, or a Hybrid (More on the three options will be in the poll thread). This will help determine new moderation systems and punishment outlines. Now this. I like this. This is good. More of this. ![]() 9539
The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:13:04 PM »Meta, how open are you to the idea of allowing more threads in Serious? Sometimes I find your judgment questionable (like... not allowing Mad Max's thread about his significant other's passing in there).Well, I don't own Serious in any real capacity. I only opposed its being there because it's not controversial, political, to do with religion or anything like that. That, really, should be the remit of Serious: politics and religion. The fact that we don't have a clearly defined boundary between the two fora leads to the Flood being sapped of things which could promote decent discussion, because somebody thought it fight the ambiguous criteria for Serious. 9540
The Flood / Re: Discuss the Mods/Site Staff« on: December 24, 2014, 02:09:30 PM »I know you do.But whatever we do do - there won't be happiness. If we become more strict, we are becoming Waypoint. If we become more lax, we apparently don't care about the forums. You're putting words in my mouth. At no point did I say there needs to be a change in the strictness or the laxness of the punishments, themselves. Although that actually highlights the underlying point I'm making here; it's about a communicative deficiency. I PM'd those suggestions to Isara and Mr P. and have heard nothing since this thread - no acknowledgement that they were being discussed or if anything was going to move forward. On some level is promoted a feeling of "why bother", but the more pressing issue was the fact that it gives the impression of an inefficient system into which ideas and suggestions are placed and nothing is done. The fact that you're discussing them is good, of course, whether you like them or not but it isn't enough to fix the deficit in transparency and understanding between the moderation team and the community. I've made my point by now, though, so I'll just leave it here unless you have any questions. I do have confidence that the moderation team is working in the right direction, it's just difficult to tell how effective such efforts are at the moment. |
