I'm off this site for good. My activity has dropped to the point where it's not really worth having an account here. The traffic has also slowed appreciably, at least to my mind. So yeah, goodbye, auf wiedersehn, adieu, whatever.

I'll ask a mod to blacklist my account in 30 minutes to an hour. So say what you gotta say in that time, if you want to.

The Flood / Should I ask this chick out
« on: June 06, 2017, 06:26:18 PM »
So basically there's this attractive girl who I met like a week ago, but can't remember, and then last night she came up to a mutual friend and said hello, then she hugged me and said hello to me. She spoke to me a little outside the bar, and I'm pretty sure at one point she was talking to her mate about me. Which could either be positive or negative.

I want to message her like 'wanna go for drinks' or something, but considering I don't really know her I don't know if that would be weird.

Guardian live-feed:

Quote
β€œThe work undertaken throughout the day has revealed that it is a possibility we cannot ignore that there is a wider group of individuals linked to this attack. This morning I said that the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre, the independent organisation responsible for setting the threat level on the basis of the intelligence available, was keeping the threat level under constant review. It has now concluded, on the basis of today’s investigations, that the threat level should be increased for the time being from severe to critical. This means that their assessment is not only that an attack remains highly likely, but that a further attack may be imminent.”

The prime minister said Operation Temperer - allowing military personnel to take to the streets - was now in force: β€œThis means that armed police officers responsible for duties such as guarding key sites will be replaced by members of the armed forces, which will allow the police to significantly increase the number of armed officers on patrol in key locations. You might also see military personnel deployed at certain events such as concerts and sports matches, helping the police to keep the public safe.”

Serious / How have your views changed over the last few years?
« on: May 21, 2017, 11:14:43 PM »
I'm definitely more left-wing on economic issues:
Quote
No longer oppose the minimum wage

No longer oppose the existence of the BBC

Not as sceptical of fiscal stimulus or government intervention

More in favour of a 'generous' safety net

More concerned with income/wealth inequality

More concerned with policies to ease labour market dislocation caused by international trade and automation

More amenable to agricultural/rurality subsidies.

Increased desire for intensive infrastructure/human capital spending by the government.

Less concerned with the deficit/less convinced by austerity.

Want to see a shift towards the Commonwealth post-Brexit; trade, particularly with the poorer African, Carribbean and Oceanic countries. Could prove to be mutually beneficial while being more effective than aid ever could

Greater desire for active industrial policy

Less in favour of the government's free schools plans

Socially, I've probably moved in a more conservative/non-liberal direction. Although in some aspects I am more liberal:

Quote
Less convinced by arguments for drug legalisation.

More concerned with the breakdown of communities/the social fabric in certain parts of developed countries.

Greater appreciation for punishment as a criminal justice tool (alongside rehabilitation).

More concerned with the integreation of immigrants and natives.

Much more appreciation for marriage as a fundamental institution of a functioning society.

Generally more tolerant of Islam as a religion, and more understanding of the sociological, legal, cultural and political aspects to Islam that has made it the way it is.

Foreign affairs, pretty much the same. Maybe slightly less interventionist:

Quote
Don't agree with intervention on spreading democracy grounds. Do agree for significant humanitarian or security concerns.

Want improved diplomantic links with the Commonwealth.

More appreciation for good done by international aid, but I'd prefer it to be limited to almost purely medical endeavours.

Less tolerant of the Saudi regime or the British government's relationship with it.

Supportive of Trump's airstrike.

Glad Rutte won. Glad Macron won.

Constitutionally, probably more conservative:

Quote
Absolutely no desire to see a reformed House of Lords. Maybe, at the most, sectoral and regional representation I could be persuaded on.

I like the regional decentralisation/introduction of mayors on basically Burkean grounds.

Devolution was a mistake.

Referenda are mistakes.

I appreciate FPTP more.

Do not want the Church of England to be disestablished.

Voted Brexit on the basis of sovereignty.

I'm too tired to think of any more.

So there's been some noises made previously about low-effort OPs on the Serious board consisting of just quoted articles and no commentary or discussion-steering from the OP, with me being a prime example.

But what's the point? Activity on this site isn't high enough--especially not on the Serious board--to warrant high effort posting. The effort just isn't rewarded with stimulating discussion.

And I mean, you could argue that more high-effort posting would lead to greater activity but I don't think anybody can think on this topic for an extended period of time and seriously reach that conclusion.

To be honest I'm rather surprised Labour has even that level of support, although this is nothing less than a massive shift in the nature of British politics.

Blue are the Tories under Michael Howard (which may depress the results) and then under May, Red is Labour under Blair and then Corbyn.

You will cry euphoric tears at the Beach Boys, you will stare down at a baby’s face as she lies asleep in your lap, you will make great friends, you will eat delicious foods you haven’t tried yet, you will be able to look at a view from a high place and not assess the likelihood of dying from falling. There are books you haven’t read yet that will enrich you, films you will watch while eating extra-large buckets of popcorn, and you will dance and laugh and have sex and go for runs by the river and have late-night conversations and laugh until it hurts. Life is waiting for you. You might be stuck here for a while, but the world isn’t going anywhere. Hang on in there if you can. Life is always worth it.

Serious / My life is pretty fucked up at the moment
« on: March 28, 2017, 12:55:22 PM »
Depression is back in force, and my drug usage has spiralled back to where it was a year ago. A non-serious relationship of mine recently ended and because I'm depressed it hurt way more than it should've done. My attendance at lectures and classes--for the term just gone--was literally zero. I get high marks on my coursework, but it doesn't motivate me; I've missed so many deadlines for essays and am unprepared for my exams, so in all likelihood I will fail and have to repeat the year. I don't get enjoyment from the things I used to enjoy; I hardly read anymore, I don't really follow the news and when I do i just don't care. I rarely post on here anymore, or reddit. The discussions just don't interest me.

I just sit around smoking weed and binging on alcohol, MDMA, ketamine or whatever else I can get hold of. And all I can think about is how pathetic and weak I am. Well, either that or how I might kill myself if it came to it.

My counsellor thinks I should start taking antidepressants. I've been reticent to do that for years but at this point I don't really have a choice. If something doesn't change I'll wind up dead either from drug abuse or my own hand. Means I have to quit MDMA though or risk serotonin syndrome, but at this point I don't even care. I want normality more than I want to be buzzed.

Don't really know why I felt the need to make this post; to organise my thoughts, to vent, whatever. Posting in Serious for obvious reasons.

Don't know what discussion value this has either really. Vent, talk about any experience you have with depression or substance abuse (or mental illness in general) or just offer me banalities about how it will all be okay. I don't mind.

Peace.

I have no idea how many questions would be appropriate, or how long it will turn out to be, but fuck it. Verb's turned out to be pretty interesting.

So yeah, ask some questions I guess.
