On a scale from 1-10, how mad where you when I was bumping everyone's AMA's on Bnet and about 10 of them were your AMA's?
On a scale of 1-10, how mad are you when I reveal that I made so many AMAs throughout my tenure on Bnet with the explicit expectation that some sperglord would come and bump them all, making me a focal point of the forum?

Of course it's jarring. I just don't see why it warrants so much complaint.
Because it's jarring - that's exactly the reason.

It kills the immersion.
If two (maybe) homosexual characters kill your immersion then I really don't know what to say to you.
I imagine it's not only that but the fact that it's an ambiguous ending (think Dexter) and the fact that the producer had to wade into the fray and confirm it.

It's not necessarily that there are two homosexual characters, it's that Turkey felt there wasn't enough development, it was too ambivalent and the involvement of the producers has made it seem like SJW pandering.

Favorite sports team?
Not a huge fan of sports, really.

English cricket team, were I forced to choose.

I'm not calling anyone a homophobe. I just find it funny that whenever a slight semblance of a homosexual character is introduced, people throw their toys out the pram and come up with pathetic excuses like 'shoehorning.' If you think it's bad characterisation that's fine, but I somehow really doubt you'd kick up such a fuss if it was two heterosexual characters.
And why should they?

I'd expect people to complain if they were heterosexual and it wasn't hinted at, but I'd expect them to complain more if it was bi or homosexual.

Such people are in the minority, so it's only natural for people to desire a more explicit build-up when it's part of a character's personality. It just seems more natural for viewers to see a male and female character hook-up, so when that tradition is broken abruptly, of course it's going to provoke more ire.

The Flood / Re: What's the opposite outlook of life being worthless?
« on: December 26, 2014, 03:23:23 PM »
It's not that life is worthless (you're an idiot if you think that). It's that the universe would be worthless without us. Extant sentient life is all the value in the universe--and it's only because we have this capacity to suffer. As long as there are sentient beings with a capacity to suffer in existence, life will always have meaning in the universe. If all sentient life were to end, there really would be no point in the existence of the universe--but there wouldn't really need to be. That's sort of the end goal, in my eyes.
Out of interest, would your position change if technology made it possible to live forever and - as a result of that - literally not a single human being would choose to have a new child. Would your philosophy, solely in relation to human beings change?

Secondly, what if technology literally made it possible for the suffering of sentient beings to be "abolished"?

Serious / Re: Can we have an honest discussion about Ronald Reagan?
« on: December 26, 2014, 03:19:14 PM »
He fucked our mental health services over and caused most of our homelessness by throwing the mental patients out onto the streets. Our mental health facilities haven't recovered since.
I'm not entirely sure how much Reagan was personally responsible for that.

It seems, if anything, to be a consequence of his pursuit of a state-focused conception of federalism, which left the states largely under-funded and needing to make cuts. Whether or not those mental health services were cut by the states themselves - unnecessarily - is debatable.

That isn't to say, of course, that Reagan couldn't have handled the transition to such a form of federalism better.

Serious / Can we have an honest discussion about Ronald Reagan?
« on: December 26, 2014, 03:11:31 PM »
I have a very mixed view on Ronald Reagan. I love and revile him in almost equal measure.

The Iran-Contra Affair was an especially nasty part of his presidency, although there's conflicted evidence as to whether or not he was aware of the activities of the likes of Oliver North.

Also, the U.S. support for Hussein's Iraq in the face of their war with post-revolutionary Iran is also disconcerting, especially their supply of chemical and biological weapons which would further empower the psychopathic and sadistic Hussein.

In saying that, however, I can also understand the Reagan administration's response to post-revolutionary Iran and their worry than an Iranian victory would further empower religious fundamentalists in the Arab region.

Reagan's best record is probably on the economy, and he certainly deserves credit for the Volcker disinflation and the reduction of income tax rates, but there's still the issue of a ballooning national debt and wild defence spending. He did, however, also have the foresight to choose Alan Greenspan to succeed Paul Volcker as Chairman of the Fed. I don't know much about any deregulation he performed, either, but I'd probably support it regardless >.>

Despite the controversy he attracts, Reagan wasn't as conservative as those who love and criticise him claim. He was, in all honesty, fairly moderate and didn't promote any policies of serious consequence - keeping the core attributes of the New Deal and Great Society still in place.

Well, what do you think?

The Serious board really ought to be for explicitly religious and political discussion only.

And philosophy/math/science pls
No.
If we try to discuss math in The Flood we'll get "everything is 50/50" and shit.
That's exactly the problem; the Flood is just completely sapped of real discussion.

I was tempted to move the Korra thread. But it seems to fall in the grey area.
I'd have moved it to be honest.

Just shoving all the controversy into one board leaves that board over-saturated and largely ignored, with the other devoid of any discussion value.

This is the Flood, Meta. You've gone incoherent.

A Nietzschean, specifically, might say amor fati.

The Flood / Swedish mosque hit by arson attack, injuring five
« on: December 26, 2014, 01:40:07 PM »
From the BBC
Quote
An arsonist set fire to a mosque in the Swedish town of Eskilstuna on Thursday, injuring five people, police said.

About 15 to 20 people were attending midday prayers in the mosque, located in the ground floor of a residential building, when the fire broke out on Christmas Day.

Local media footage showed smoke and flames billowing from the windows before firefighters put the blaze out.

The incident comes amid a fierce debate in Sweden over immigration policies.

The far right wants to cut the number of asylum seekers allowed into Sweden by 90%, while mainstream parties are intent on preserving the country's liberal policy.

"A witness saw somebody throw an object through the window of the building, which serves as a mosque, after which a violent fire began," police spokesman Lars Franzell told reporters.

He said five people were taken to hospital for treatment of injuries ranging from smoke inhalation to lacerations.

Police are treating the incident as arson but no arrests have been made so far, Mr Franzell added.

Eskilstuna, which has a large immigrant population, was the scene of clashes involving neo-Nazi groups opposed to Sweden's immigration policy earlier this year.

Poor Muslims. A lot of the time you hear about the negative impact on the native communities when it comes to immigration and multiculturalism, in relation to Islamic customs and practices (not to mention ideological fundamentalism).

But it genuinely does sadden me to see this happening to a group of Muslims who, on the whole were probably very decent people and who - regardless of if they were - the arsonist probably did it without knowing or caring.

I got for you.
Your two options are
1. Staying on earth with new knowledge of saving the world. Healing the planet and curing sickness.
2. Leaving towards space with a crew of 2000 people to a possible habitable world knowing you'd never come back?
Leaving, definitely.

I got Alan Greenspan's autobiography.

Oh, and a biography of Napoleon.

Two big fuck-off hardcover books about 900 pages long.

So, yeah, that was pretty sweet.
