Is it a public or private college?
Public.

Is there any meaningful distinction between between culture and religion? Maybe it's the culture of their backgrounds that does it? If someone were to convert to Islam without the Middle Eastern culture interfering, would they become more radical or violent?
Given the extent of fundamentalism in my own and other European nations, I'd wager converts have a significant capacity to be more violent.

In all honesty, however, it's difficult to separate religion and culture. Islamic fundamentalism isn't just a set of propositions, it's a way of life--it is, as far as it matters, a kind of culture or at least inexorably linked to a corresponding culture.

Because you blamed Islam, Islam didn't make those people shoot up the place, the shooters backwards mindset and the twisted extremist beliefs they have did.
No, it did.

They shot the place up while shouting allahu ackbar.

They were quite clearly Muslims and motivated by their beliefs, in the same way Christians have been motivated to bomb abortion clinics or block stem-cell research. Trying to say they aren't really Muslims is apologetics of the worst sort because, whatever you may think about the scripture and doctrines of Islam, they were still Muslims.

I'm not just saying to this to troll, but is it possible that Muslims are more violent because they come from such a poor socioeconomic status, rather than because they worship the Qur'an?
That's probably a significant variable, but not to extent you'd expect.

It doesn't even begin to explain why more middle-class Pakistanis are fundamentalists than working-class Pakistanis, or the extent of fundamentalism in Western European countries or why you find the same phenomenon among fascist movements throughout history.

This is indicative of people trying to work around the link between belief and action. No, they don't do it primarily because they're poor, they do it because they genuinely believe in the truth of doctrines like martyrdom.

Not your best comeback. I'd give it a 6/10

Moral of the story, don't be ignorant.
>people shoot up place because they're muslim and don't like cartoons
>i comment that islam makes good people do horrible things

I'm not seeing the disconnect. It seems like a logical set of propositions to me.

You should read Jonathan Haidt's The Righteous Mind--it goes into detail about moral cognition and how it evolved and relates to things like religion and politics.

Very, very briefly, it evolved as a mechanism for self-domestication.

You should nail a quran to a small pig and throw it through her window at night.
Okay now that would be Islamaphobic.

I was walking down a corridor with my friend after an exam yesterday when I asked him "Did you hear about the Charlie Hebdo shooting in France?"

He said, "Yeah, I did, how many people died?"

I said, "I think around 12 people."

My friend: "Jesus."

So I said, "Yeah, 12 people dead for a fucking cartoon. Islam, man, I tell ya. . . Makes good people do terrible things."

Little did I know a Muslim girl within the college was walking behind me at the time and heard me say this (this is the one who constantly posts pictures of dead Palestinian children and quotes herself on instagram), so she reported me to the faculty.

I have to attend a "sensitivity class".

Un-fucking-believable.

Actually not bad. It's like a cross between Vimto and Coca-Cola.

Probably be nice with a bit of Mr. Walker's.

Assuming no harm is ever done to any child, is it morally incorrect for someone to publicly act upon those urges (be open about pedophilia)? Should people be morally obligated to be disgusted by pedophilia?
I think it'd be indecent of a person to be 'open' about paedophilia. I certainly think, however, that it needs addressing. Contrary to your second question, I think people have a moral obligation to be compassionate towards such people.

Quote
Is pedophilia morally incorrect because of the harm it causes children or because of the way the public reacts to it?
I'd argue the way the public react to it is immoral, in itself.

Price mechanisms?
The supply-demand interaction which gives something its price.

If government subsidies somehow reduce or take away the price of something, it'll pretty much undoubtedly cause over-consumption and over-production.

Buddhism?
Not as a whole.

Mahayana and Tibetan Buddhism? Yeah, probably. Theravada and Zen? No.

Some degrees are in demand and some aren't.
That's exactly the problem--the government is propping up a scheme whereby un-demanded qualifications will become artificially demanded because the price mechanism has been turned on its head.

No, I didn't say it was required. I said it was essential. Small, but important difference.
. . .

"Essential" literally means "necessary".

I'm seriously beginning to consider Islam a hate movement.
It's just the radicals that are doing this. The real Muslims preach peace and tolerance.

You know some really awful Muslims, then.

No religion espouses peace and tolerance. Except Jainism.

And even if we accept there are tolerant and peaceful Muslims--as there undoubtedly are--we still have to realise that fundamentalists form a vast minority, if not a majority, of all Muslims on the planet.

Fuck, whichever's easiest in a given situation.
