Serious / Favourite theologian, atheist and philosopher?
« on: June 10, 2015, 02:45:03 PM »
Who is your favourite theologian from whatever religion, favourite atheist and favourite philosopher? Your reasons for choosing the philosopher, however, must be secular.

My favourite theologian is definitely Friedrich Schleiermacher, because I have a soft-spot for the Irenaean tradition of theodicy and I'm a fan of Schleiermachian ethics.

My favourite atheist is probably Christopher Hitchens, simply for his wit and passion.

My favourite philosopher is obviously Nietzsche, although I do like Roman philosopher Boethius too.

Just to make it clear, if you're defining feminism as "wanting women's rights" then I am absolutely a feminist; I'm a massive fan of Camile Paglia too.

I just don't "identify" with contemporary feminism, insofar as it can be called a movement, because I) the contemporary movement has a lot of toxic elements and II) feminism is no longer needed in an active sense.

Maybe police react differently to African-Americans on account of the higher chance they could be knifed, shot or beaten up should other African-Americans get involved?

The truth of the matter is that you can't conjure willpower out of thin air
Yes, you can. Of course you can. All you need to do is not be psychologically ill.

I mean, come on.

i guess i'll have to add, "if you support women's rights, you are a feminist--no exceptions" to my list
Given the current movement's willingness to say this in conversation, regardless of the shit they've spouted previously, I find that statement incredibly disingenuous.

Stern, Nordhaus and Tol tell us we should implement a $80/tonne carbon tax on CO2 emissions.

Well, here we are:
Quote
Environmental taxes hit a new record high of £44.6 billion in 2014, official figures show, as the bill for renewable energy levies rose to almost £3 billion.

The data from the ONS shows that the green tax burden has more than doubled over the past two decades, from £19.4 billion in 1994.

Last year saw the ninth consecutive increase in the tax burden, which stood at £43 billion in 2013.

The vast majority of the taxes are those levied on transport fuels such as petrol and diesel, accounting for £27.1

billion. Vehicle duties accounted for £6 billion of the total and air passenger duty £3.2 billion.

The cost of renewable energy taxes to subsidise wind and solar farms rose by more than a fifth to £2.9 billion.

UK carbon emissions are around 500 million tonnes/year, which requires $40 billion total in green taxes. We're about $26 billion higher than that.

So fuck you, we're done.

It doesn't matter if God is cruel or not, as an omniscient being he is objectively moral and what actions he makes in his interests are ultimately the most purposeful.
I don't see how that follows.

Meta, what your thoughts on IRV?
What the fuck is that?
Instant-runoff voting? Surely you've heard of it... Maybe you call it something else over there.
Ah, we call it alternative vote.

We had a referendum on it in 2011, one of the Liberal Democrats' better ideas. I like it; it's better than first-past-the-post and proportional voting systems as well. Shame the public voted it down.

randomness in quantum mechanics
I'm yet to see evidence which suggests quantum indeterminism has any kind of effect on "classical" physics.

But, hell, I'm no physicist.

He hated nihilists.
...huh?...

you might wanna add that one to your list, because

what
It's a ridiculously common misconception, granted, but Nietzsche essentially considered nihilism a form of cultural rot caused by the decline of religion and the "objective" values it gave us.

Serious / Re: Your most controversial opinions

how is that controversial that is literally just basic logic
I guess I just have to disproportionately deal with people who whip out the indeterminism card whenever I mention I'm a determinist.

Quote
I consciously acknowledge that science does not support determinism
What, how doesn't it?
