It's not a case of blind faith. I agree that people who say there has to be aliens are clutching at straws, but given the fact that we know and understand at least one set of conditions which lead to life--and have observed exoplanets which most likely be in such conditions--then it's hardly unreasonable to hypothesise life would also develop there. Our planet, of all habitable planets, represents 2.5e -9 per cent. I'd say the probability of life developing on such a small proportion of ostensibly life-supporting planets is lower that life develop on a higher proportion of such planets.

The Fermi Paradox is altogether unsatisfying. I should imagine it's more than likely that any species, given evolution, would probably end up wiping itself out before reaching the capacity for interstellar travel.
