Serious / Who won the Republican debates?
« on: August 08, 2015, 06:04:12 AM »
You can pick two winners.

I picked Kasich because he managed to do pretty well for an underdog, I think his polls will surge as a result. Plus, he's probably the closest candidate to my actual views.

I also picked Rubio, because he managed to put himself out there ahead of the others. It's no surprise the Democrats fear a Rubio ticket the most, given how he could position himself (either against Sanders or Clinton) as the candidate of the new instead of the old.

Bush also impressed me, but he didn't really "win".

Atheist existentialism.

Of course, I can't pass up recommending Nietzsche. While not explicitly existentialist, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is a beautiful book.
Everyone should read Zen at some point in their lives, such a great book. I do enjoy Nietzsche though I've only read On The Genealogy of Morality. There any of his other books worth reading?
Beyond Good and Evil.

your rights do not include anything that would require action on someone else's part
I kind of disagree with this. I'd say your rights don't extend to merely taking other people's labour/services. You have a right to pursue healthcare, for instance, but the doctor sure as shit doesn't have the right to not treat you if he doesn't like you.
Doctors shouldn't treat people they dislike? What?
No, doctors don't have the right to refuse treatment. I'm saying Door is, on some level, wrong when he says rights don't give you access to other people's labour.

Why do you guys like Kasich so much? He doesn't look that great to me. Against same-sex marriage and abortion. Against same-sex adoption. Supports teaching 'alternatives' to evolution in the classroom. Against drug legalization. Against unions.

No thanks.
He's accepted the court ruling n gay mariage, and explicitly talked about tolerance and love towards homosexuals during the debates.

He only supports banning abortion after twenty weeks, with the exception of saving the mother's life.

And he has managed to bring the recidivism rate of drug-addicted criminals in Ohio down to 10pc by supporting rehabiliataion.

Oh, and his stance on evolution is more than made up for by his willingness to actually do something about climate change.

would a guaranteed basic income work as a substitute for minimum wage and unemployment benefits
Yup, although you're better off having a negative income tax instead.

The crowd clapped when Kasich spoke about tolerance and love for homosexuals.
Funny. Just last election they boo'd a gay soldier.
Jesus Fuck.

Any highlights? I was on a plane during the debate.
The crowd booed Trump a fair amount.

The crowd clapped when Kasich spoke about tolerance and love for homosexuals.

There was a stupid question at the end about whether or not God had spoken to any of the candidates.

I have to admit I was disappointed with that, but it's a bit cheap to act as if this is the only debate and opinions among Republicans on these issues don't exist.

Although, Kasich kind of did mention inequality when he was talking about prosperity reaching everybody and Bush definitely mentioned student debt.

I want to see the crowd respond to Kasich on a climate change question.
What's his view on it? Is it something Reps usually would be for or against?
Against. He's pretty much with the scientific consensus on climate change.

Not too sure about Bush's 'opting-out' of Common Core, but he handled the question well enough.

I'm just waiting for Kasich to get a decent question.
