Statistics show that the police have become increasingly aggressive and segregated from society, as well as more willing to act in a violent manner when they have the equipment to do so. Policing isn't an easy job, so it's borderline retarded to give them something with a lot more punch. Not to mention, the state of the government, as you pointed out, should make any attempts at beefing up domestic enforcement sceptical. But, oh wait, I forgot. You're not really a libertarian. They did back in 2010. They were the only party pushing for serious constitutional reform. They've sort of fallen out of favour with the general public now, though. Can't say I'm surprised.

So, Bernanke's on record saying the 2008 financial crisis was worse than any other financial crisis in history. Including the one of '29. Obviously, you have to ask why it didn't turn into a second depression. Well, essentially, Milton Friedman was right. The central banks of the world (minus the ECB >.>) adopted regimes of expansionary monetary policy, whereas the Fed in '29 performed adopted a sharp contractionary policy. Essentially, monetary stimulus was the only thing which kept us from a depression since no fiscal stimulus was really performed. Can we adopt a proper monetary regime now and stop having recessions and bailouts? Or at the very least put fiscal stimulus under central bank control.
