Wasn't austerity kind of terrible in Europe?
It was much worse due to the fact they've had no monetary stimulus, but yeah.

You can make up to five reforms each in economic, social and foreign policy. What do you do?

Economic
- Scrap the BoE's/Fed's monetary committee and put a nominal income target in place.
- Removing limits on high-skilled and educational immigration.
- Overhaul welfare along the lines of a Basic Income.
- Abolish corporation tax.
- Establish infrastructure bank.

Social
- Graded legalisation of all drugs.
- Abolition of prisons in their current form.
- Focus on the rehabilitation of offenders.
- Massive educational drive regarding mental illness.
- Give control back to the schools to implement a uniform, minimalist national curriculum.

Foreign Policy
- Ground troops to combat ISIS.
- Support Assad's government.
- Take a hard-line against Iran.
- Support Israel.

Now, post yours and we'll judge them. Also, judge mine >.>

Serious / Does austerity work?

In economics, austerity describes policies used by governments to reduce budget deficits during adverse economic conditions. These policies may include spending cuts, tax increases, or a mixture of the two.
I can't say I'm an advocate, despite being a Conservative.

Austerity is more relevant in the U.K., but the States have also seen fiscal austerity since 2010-ish.

So a parent can kill their 3 month old child, despite it being heavily dependent on the mother as it was as a fetus?
Well, no, because it's socially undesirable to simply allow mothers to murder 3 month old children. Not to mention, you'd probably want to look into a case like that anyway for mental illness. A 3 month old child's capacity to suffer is exponentially larger than that of a zygote.

If you're concerned about suffering, then you should scream bloody murder every time somebody kills a fly.

Serious / Re: Mom attacks woman over screaming child
« on: November 09, 2014, 01:09:21 PM »
Yes, that's exactly why a parent should remove their disruptive child from the area. It's called being a decent human being.
If I had just traipsed around a store getting my shopping and was in line to pay the minute my kid started acting out, I'd just try to ride with it. If somebody came up to me and asked me to leave the store, I'd say "No, fuck you."

Scientists agree that human life starts as the zygote. Funny how we care what scientists have to say on climate control and other things, but when it comes to life it's totally disregarded
There's nothing inherently wrong with ending an innocent life, though.

Serious / Unlike Americans, Brits think taxation is a moral duty
« on: November 09, 2014, 12:35:14 PM »
YouGov
Quote
Compared to the United States, people in Britain enjoy a far wider range of public services. For example, here the NHS covers the entire country but in America 41 million people are uninsured and live without regular healthcare. The welfare state isn't cheap, however, and people in Britain pay for it. In the United States the tax burden is 25.1% of GDP, but in Britain taxes consume 35.5% of the total economy.

The latest research from YouGov shows that most Americans (53%) say that your right to keep the money you earn is a stronger moral argument than a duty to contribute towards public services, something only 37% of Americans feel is the stronger moral issue. The situation is reversed in Britain, where 63% of people say that your duty to contribute is a stronger moral argument than your right to keep the money you earn.

Attitudes differ so significantly between the US and the UK that the responses of Democrats in the US are largely the same as the responses of right-wing, Conservative Party voters in the UK. 56% of Democrats and 55% of Conservatives say that the duty to contribute to public services is the stronger moral argument. This compares to 71% of left-wing Labour voters in the UK, and only 24% of Republicans in the US.

Really highlights the historic cultural disparities.

>thinking the Republicans are somehow blatantly anti-science. Fucking lol.

They support science, outside of NASA and experiments to promote military growth? News to me.
In fairness. The two biggest failings of Republicans when it comes to science is climate change and stem cell research. The Democrats can be equally disappointing when it comes to thinks like GMOs and nuclear energy.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson even went on record in '09 and said that the Republicans were better at funding science than Democrats and, broadly, the two parties' supporters have an equally positive view of science. The Republicans definitely have an unfair persona as the "anti-science" party.

No. Businesses get successful,  largely, by providing value. Why should we cap Apple or Microsoft simply because people like their shit?

Corporate welfare is what needs to be ridden from the earth.
