I will have to read it some day. When I get through all the Nietzsche, Hume, Schopenhauer and Kant books on my shelves >.> Although, I have to say, Camus's extreme scepticism isn't that endearing - although, I could be wrong, since I'm only going from secondary sources.

Feels like it's time to re-inject a bit of culture into this decadent, capitalist forum.

I'm currently just about to finish the first volume of The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith, which I've been reading for far too long. I'm also reading Christopher Hitchens's memoir, Hitch-22 and a biography of FDR.

On a side-note, I've also ordered a biography of Napoleon.

Absolutely! That's one of the cruxes of the entire movement. If you ever get the time, read The Rebel. It's a fantastic piece of anti-nihilism which also differentiates Camus' stance from existentialism as well.

No.

V > IV > VI
why do you have to be so typical about it
Because I'm not a special snowflake.

The fifth movie was the best film of the franchise, and the sixth was the worst of the original trilogy. And, collectively, the prequels were worse than the originals and I just happened to like the second the most and the first the least.

Just the way it is.

you do realize that absurdism doesn't at all deny that people can make their own meaning, correct? It does state that meaninglessness must be embraced [i.e. pursuit of intrinsic or the even sillier pursuit of objective meaning will end in failure] from a larger, detached standpoint. But absurdists greatly admire the creation of personal meaning. They just maintain that this meaning is certainly not the same as being one with the absurd.
I have to say I've read differently. From this perspective it seems no different from existentialism. Or, could you say, is existentialism more concerned with the values created, while absurdism is concerned with the pursuit of values?

Quote
Elucidate? Are you stating that the way nihilists recognize objective or intrinsic meaninglessness => meaning for nihilists? Because das silly :P
I'm not saying that for nihilists themselves. I'm saying the way nihilists recognise meaninglessness, to non-nihilists, seems altogether profound and meaningful.

Serious / Re: I finished my undergraduate degree in engineering today!
« on: December 13, 2014, 04:01:28 PM »
I'm not familiar enough with the US education system to really know what an undergraduate degree is, so maybe that's where this confusion stems from.
In the U.K., an undergraduate's degree (or BA. (Bachelor's)) is the first degree one gets - hence, undergraduate. A Master's (MPhil. or MSc.) is a graduate degree since you've graduated with the BA degree beforehand. Finally, there's the doctorate. The U.K. and the U.S. are almost identical.

I can't imagine that's too different from your system.

The Flood / My colleague was just fired
« on: December 13, 2014, 03:20:27 PM »
The company reserves the right to terminate our contracts for whatever reason while we're on a probationary period for a while after we start working there. She was fired for having too many absences.

The absence that broke the contract's back? She had to be wheeled out of the store one day on an ambulance and into a gurney because she fainted. That, apparently, counted as an absence.

I don't know what attracts you to absurdism. I can see the appeal in trying to navigate a post-religious world, what with the breakdown of solid values, but to deny that people can make their own meaning and say we have to embrace meaninglessness seems, to me, psychologically unnecessary. People can and do create their own meaning.

It's also like nihilism in the sense that the lack of meaning seems altogether incredibly profound - in the same way, not creating meaning and embracing the meaninglessness is a form of meaning in itself.

10133
You're too modest.
Thou knoweth me not.

10134
Recently, my mother has been making several proclamations about how proud she is of me. It wouldn't be much of a nuisance had I not asked her each time to stop. It's not bad to have your parents be proud of you, of course, but I just don't want their pride. I'm not doing things in life for their pride - their pride, essentially, is of no value to me.

In saying that, let's assume I do want their pride. However, I still don't think I'd want it now. Who am I? Nobody. I am a nobody. I've accomplished nothing of merit; I don't even have a degree yet. So I get decent grades, read a lot of books and am generally smarter than most people I know - but I still haven't done anything worthwhile or influential.

Now, when I've accomplished something, then it'd be a different story.

Spoiler
Not to sound like an ingrate. I don't mind that my parents are proud of me; it's good that they're happy. Their pride is just meaningless to me.

Must be a parent thing.
