News / Anniversary Anarchy!
« on: July 26, 2015, 08:52:11 PM »
It's Sep7agon's birthday tomorrow, and so as a gift to all members, we're having 24 hours of Anarchy. Since this is the ultra-cool 1-year anniversary of Sep7agon opening, I'll be dropping some stuff randomly inside that board. Nothing huge; just some Amazon dollars and whatever else I can get my hands on that I feel comfortable with giving to you guys.

For reference: Anarchy starts at midnight on Monday and ends at midnight on Tuesday (CST).

If you're new and haven't experienced Anarchy, drop in to your nameplate page and request the Beyond the Sea nameplate to gain access to the fun.

Rules are as follows:
Quote
1. Illegal stuff.
2. Semi-illegal stuff (loli porn)
3. Releasing personal info about other users
   — This includes anything not publicly available nor posted on Sep7agon
4. Stretching the forum body by creating an obnoxiously-long thread title

Anything else is fair game. Breaking the above rules will get you kicked out of Anarchy. If you do something illegal, I'll also report you to the authorities, so don't be stupid.

Firstly, which of the two designs do you prefer? Secondly, what bugs you about the design or what do you think needs to be changed/improved? I'm iffy on the "I" at the very top, as the cursive makes it a tad hard to interpret.

News / Quck update: Saved Threads
« on: July 09, 2015, 02:14:29 AM »
I did a quick poke and realized that the saved threads mod that I had assumed was completely broken was just missing a single bit of code that was preventing the button from showing up. I've gone ahead and put the button in, so you should now see a "save thread" button at the top of each thread, and a new "saved threads" menu item in your avatar dropdown menu up there in the navigation bar.

Enjoy. :)

News / Anarchy Weekend
« on: June 25, 2015, 08:12:40 PM »
It's Blaze's birthday this weekend, and he's asked for another round of Anarchy as a gift to all members. So, I'll be granting his wish and you guys will have the run of the place from tonight (midnight) until the very beginning of Monday, as was the usual allotted time (and yes, that's central time).

News / Confirm your email address
« on: June 18, 2015, 09:11:26 PM »
We're still a while out from another major site update, but I wanted to get this message out there, since it is highly likely that the update will force everyone to reset their passwords via email.

So please, check your email that is attached to your account and make sure it's valid and current. If you forget to do this and the update is applied and you get locked out, I will be able to recover your account, but it will be a lot slower than just making sure your information is correct.

Thanks, and I'll let you know more about the update later on, once we have something to share.

The Flood / GG Tapatalk
« on: June 03, 2015, 04:14:05 PM »
Guys, I finally figured out the strange phenomenon where "random" quotes don't show up in your alerts box. It's Tapatalk. If you make a reply and quote while using Tapatalk, it will add a <br /> to the beginning of the post body and skip the alert/notification trigger for the normal site.

Just thought you should know...

News / Tapatalk Update
« on: May 29, 2015, 12:33:19 PM »
The tapatalk plugin will be removed from the forum in the next month or so. This is happening after I checked my forum owner dashboard on Tapatalk and realized they pocket all ad revenue under $5 in a given month. That means that those annoying ads you've been seeing haven't been helping the site at all, and I obviously don't agree with their policies.

So, I'm really sorry to those of you who only surf the forum on your phone and don't like the mobile site, but you might have to suck it up for a month or so after I turn the app off.

The Flood / Question about Groups
« on: May 21, 2015, 10:36:27 PM »
I know I'm lagging behind on the time table I had told everyone about, but things are moving ahead behind the scenes and in the next few months I expect groups to be a fully functioning thing here on Sep7agon. I also know that a bunch of you think groups will thin the population a whole hell of a lot, so I'd like to explain my plan to you first.

After the site upgrade and groups are functioning, I'll invite a couple popular groups from Bnet or other communities to come and try them out and give feedback. While this is happening, nobody will be able to create groups and only those invited will be able to join the test groups that will be set up. As was the case with Anarchy in the past, activity breeds activity, regardless of if it's separated from the main boards, and so it's my hope that we'll attract members from those test groups into our general population, merely by hosting their community.

After that is all done and I can see a clear increase in the population (and once the groups don't fall apart) I'll open group creation up to the most active members and allow anyone to join a group. When that doesn't kill the forum (which I'm hopeful it won't, although it may turn out to be bad for overall activity) I'll allow any and all users to create groups.

So since these plans are starting to come together, I wanted to get the community's pulse on this: which group(s) on Bnet do you think would do well here or would want to come and try it out here? Any groups outside Bnet that you think might be interested?

The Flood / iPhone 5 Build Color?
« on: May 14, 2015, 07:40:45 PM »
So yeah, I just got a really good deal on an unlocked iPhone 5, so I'm going to fix it up and change out all the external parts (and a few internal ones), so it can be whatever color I desire. I'm leaning toward gold, but I've done 3 of those in a row so maybe it's time for something new.

So, if you were to pick an iPhone, what color would you want it to be?

The Flood / Remove Quote Nesting?
« on: April 17, 2015, 02:45:31 PM »
What it is:

Quote
Hey
Quote
Lol

So, I've heard some complaints regarding the notification system and quotes (and also quotes from specific users, but that's a separate issue that I still need to look into). Basically: if you get roped into a quote chain, you will get an alert for each quote afterward, even if your quote doesn't show up in the post.

This is caused by a css styling that only allows 3 levels of quotes, but actually logs all of them in the system. SMF has an on and off switch with quote nesting and does not easily allow 1 or 2 or 3 levels, so my question to you is: should quote nesting be disabled completely, in favor of direct quoting, where you will only get notifications when someone directly quotes you?

News / New Ninja
« on: April 13, 2015, 07:28:04 PM »
The staff realized it was a bit...understaffed...as of late, and so to help moderate the forum, Comet is being promoted to Forum Ninja and will get the orange text and nifty titlebar to go along with it.

You may post your congratulatory statements here if you really, really have to. ::)

The Flood / How often do you use this?
« on: April 07, 2015, 07:45:33 PM »

I've been looking at ways to improve the forum after some criticisms of the "NEW" image that appears for new topics, and I ran across this eyesore.

My question to you is: how often do you use the little page selection links shown in the image? I'm not talking about pagination within a thread; merely the links visible in board view.

News / The End of Anarchy (or is it?)
« on: March 30, 2015, 03:38:11 PM »
First of all, note the day this was posted; it's not a bad April Fool's joke, guys.

Anarchy, as of this moment, will no longer be opening up every month.

Of course I didn't want to do this; the first few Anarchy's were incredibly entertaining, both in the amount of people participating and the multitude of strange threads that were created. It was chaos and it was beautiful.

Unfortunately, these last couple rounds have been both stagnant and detrimental to the forum. Truth is: people aren't participating as much as they were three or four rounds ago, and it's been on a steady decline. Coupled with that are the hurt feelings and grudges that live on after Anarchy ends. In theory, asking you all to compartmentalize your Anarchy experience from your Sep7agon experience worked, but in practice, the more vocal and naughty members carry over some of that into both on and off-site places.

And so I've decided to shut it down all together, until such a time comes that the board could be fun for everybody again. And with the coming plans of private groups, the board begins to become extremely obsolete.

Feel free to complain in here or leave some comments; if you have any threads in Anarchy that would not be prohibited outside of it, you can request that they be moved.

The Flood / Chat Thread (Wednesday — Whenever)
« on: March 25, 2015, 02:03:06 AM »
This is something new we're trying out, so be sure to read before you go crazy!

Yes, we're starting up a bi-daily chat thread rotation to see how it works out and if it will stay around. That means that this is basically an experiment, so don't consider this a definite staple of Sep7agon just yet. The standard welcome/rules message will follow:

Welcome to the Sep7agon Chat thread! There are a few rules and guidelines for the chat thread that you should be aware of:
  • This chat thread will be locked as soon as the time limit has expired and another will be created in its place.
  • 2 days after a chat thread is locked, it will be deleted to prevent post counts from becoming inflated. Use this schedule to screencap/archive any posts or conversations you don't want deleted.
  • Spam is still not allowed (all the rules are still in place here, except, of course, for the derailment rule). Use the edit button to edit your message and don't stack 3 or more posts in a row.
  • Report posts that break the rules. With the size that this thread will likely grow to, it will become difficult for Ninjas to patrol the thread on their own. They need your help, so report bad behavior.

News / LC promoted to Grandmaster Ninja
« on: March 18, 2015, 03:33:49 PM »
Today I'm promoting LC to the new rank of Grandmaster Ninja, after some talks in staff chat regarding PM reports specifically and general moderation overall. The fact is that I can't always be around to have the final say or answer your questions, since I do have other things to do around the site and in real life.

And so, LC is being promoted to a low administration position, where he will have control over reported PMs as well as overseeing the rest of the Ninjas (and a few other account modifying tools that allow him to assign staff positions and nameplates).

So to break it down:
  • LC gets the gold titlebar and text
  • Master Forum Ninja title is being retired for now, and all mods will receive the IP/ban powers
If you have any questions or comments, you can post them here. :)

News / Anarchy (3/6/15–3/8/15)
« on: March 05, 2015, 06:02:44 PM »

Anarchy will be starting up in a few hours (at Midnight CST, ending at Midnight on Monday), so I'd like to once again remind you of the stuff that is not allowed:

Quote
1. Illegal stuff.
2. Semi-illegal stuff (loli porn)
3. Releasing personal info about other users
   — This includes anything not publicly available nor posted on Sep7agon
4. Stretching the forum body by creating an obnoxiously-long thread title

Breaking the above rules will get you kicked out of Anarchy. If you do something illegal, I'll also report you to the authorities, so don't be stupid.

There is no nameplate to get into Anarchy this round. If you're a registered member, you are invited. Users who do stupid things and break the Anarchy rules will be blacklisted from Anarchy and be unable to participate.

Thanks. :)

News / In response to recent issues raised
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:32:50 AM »

So as you all may have noticed, a few people have raised their issues with how things are here and to be frank a few of their concerns are more than valid. There are no rule changes as of yet; only the responses to those rule breakings are being augmented.

One of the guidelines issued to the mods back in October was overall neglected, which dealt with repeat offenders (http://sep7agon.net/index.php?topic=9003.0). Tough love was necessary back then, and it's looking like it's necessary again now. That being said, to suddenly have everyone on edge fearing a ban for screwing around a bit isn't right either, so to keep things workable, repeat offenders who will be subject to this system will be those who have either:

1. A cumulative total of warning points exceeding 200%
or
2. A total of warning points exceeding 100% in the last 30 days

Users who fit either of these criteria will receive a One Week ban, minimum, for each serious rule violation.

The permaban process, streamlined
If a user decides that they aren't going to stop misbehaving, they are going to get themselves on an extended vacation much sooner than before. The rough plan is as follows:

1 week ban >> 2 week ban >> 1 month >> Perma

Harsher punishments
Serious offences will be being upped in percentage, stuff that might have only got you a 20% will now probably earn you a lite-ban. This is in response to the generally lax moderation style not working as well as it would seem; we won't be suddenly turning into nazis, but it's becoming clear that certain users aren't getting the message.

What to Expect
As of now, you can expect to see a drastic decline in "watched" status and an increase in "lite-banned" as we work toward beating the bad behavior out of you. Hopefully, after a time, we can get the community to behave a bit more and the need for bans will decrease.

The Goal
I don't want to turn this place into a hug box or an echo chamber by banning anyone who happens to disagree with the mod squad (we're already apparently circlejerk central) but I also don't want us to continue to alienate members by being too lax with moderation.

We're not a large site in comparison to B.lind by any means, so we need to find a happy medium between objective rule enforcement and subjective understanding of context. I can't help but feel part of the issue was a few members skirting the rules and being immune to any sort of moderation. I think we need to take a look at those kinds of things as well, but that might be a discussion for another time.

One of the reasons that Bnet fell out of favour was the staff not listening to the userbase, they ignored them and gave non-answers and told people to mute the ones who were harassing them etc. We'd like to avoid this, so this part of the announcement is to promote people airing their grievances. You can do so either in a PM to a moderator or in a thread in Septagon.

The second part is an appeal for people to report things that break the rules more. If you see some users flaming away at each other and shitting up a thread - report them so it gets seen by the mods.

Septagon / WebM Support Temporarily Disabled
« on: March 02, 2015, 03:53:17 PM »
As many of you probably know, recently, URLs have been breaking when there's a "#" sign in them and strangely appearing when you post a hashtag. The culprit behind this was the BBCode Manager mod I installed for WebM support.

Until I can work out a solution, WebM Support is temporarily disabled. Sorry, guys. :(

News / Warning System Update
« on: March 01, 2015, 02:34:37 AM »
This is a short, graphical update (mostly) that I thought I'd let you know about.

Warning status has been moved to the nameplate, in the spot the staff icon resides. The yellow circle with a stripe is "watched" and the red circle with an x is "lite-banned". If you're not seeing this or you experience nameplate breakage, hard refresh your browser by pushing ctrl + f5 to get the uncached style.

Also: lite-banned members are now visible to everyone, but watched status is still only visible to you and the staff.

News / Anarchy? Anarchy.
« on: January 29, 2015, 04:29:34 PM »

Yeah, it's that time of the month again, everybody. You know the drill. Anarchy will be open Friday, January 30 through Sunday, February 1, ending at the stroke of midnight CST, on Monday.

The following stuff is banned from Anarchy:

1. Illegal stuff.
2. Semi-illegal stuff (loli porn)
3. Releasing personal info about other users.
4. Stretching the forum body by creating an obnoxiously-long thread title.

Breaking the above rules will get you kicked out of Anarchy. If you do something illegal, I'll also report you to the authorities, so don't be stupid.

You can get in on the fun by grabbing the Please Stand By nameplate, which is this month's invitation. It will remain free-to-all until a few hours into Anarchy, at which time I'll switch it over to request-only.

News / Bye, Monitors! Hello, Ninjas!
« on: January 19, 2015, 03:50:32 PM »
Over the last few days, I've been talking with the staff and coming up with ideas for a better structure within the mod squad. A lot of these talks had to do with the Monitor role, and how it didn't exactly command much respect on the forum; it was effectively useless, especially with two different tiers of Ninjas.

So given that, I've decided to completely ax the Monitor role as everyone knows it. It will likely appear down the road in another form (and I have details on plans for it if you'd like to hear them), but for now it will go the way of the dinosaur.

So where does that leave those who are Monitors? Well, since we're getting rid of the position completely (and since we lost a Ninja a few days ago) we will be trying them out as potential Ninjas for one or two weeks, to see how they do and how the community likes them. Those that can't handle the responsibility, or are deemed incompetent, will be let off the staff to return to normal member status.

It's unlikely that all the Monitors will be accepted into permanent Ninja status, so in the case of multiple Monitors failing, I'll probably begin the vetting process for picking a new Ninja or two from the general population of active users (who aren't complete dicks).

Questions? Comments? Angry comments? Put 'em here and I'll get back to you.
