Welp, I'll just give you some directions. You're at the bonfire in the burg right? When you walk out of the room, take a right and go back down the stairs. You'll end up in a boxy area with some undead and wooden barriers. Kill them and look to your left. You'll see two undead with pikes and shields. There's a stairway in that area that goes downwards into a building. You can either kill the spear fags or run past them. Image for reference. Stairway to go down should be on the left side I believe.

Spoiler

The merchent is relaxing casually on a balcony down on the lower levels. There's only one or two undead in there to deal with before you talk to him.

He'll sell you repair powder which can fix your shit up, or a repair box that you can use at the bonfire which still costs souls to use but eliminates the dependancies on blacksmiths.

i don't even care

Am I wrong in thinking that having a durability system in this of all games is fucking retarded?

Do I need to explain why that's stupid?

Like I said. I never even remember having a weapon break on me in that game. The scimitar is just really damn flimsy compared to most other weapons. Once you get a stock or repair powder or just buy the repair box, broken weapons will never be an issue.

There are weapons which have pretty damn strong special attacks that take a good chunk of durability - if spammed it makes the whole thing useless because it breaks.

Also teaches you not to get overly reliant to a single weapon as it forces you to change it up.

I actually like the durability system. Far more than the checkpooint based system in Dark Souls 2.

Oh ya speak of the devil, special attacks.

That's why they added durability. There are some exceptionally hard hitting weapons in that game. The game would play itself for you if you could spam those specials to your heart's content.

You can always tell who reads walkthroughs like a casul if you happen to get summoned past the taurus demon.

The entire game is about killing lots and lots of enemies with weapons--they absolutely should not break. That's like having a mechanic in NBA Live where the ball deflates if you dribble it too much.

What does it matter if you only use a single weapon?
What's the difference between killing an enemy with weapon A instead of weapon B?

All it does is force you to tediously grind more souls, only to sink them all at some merchant's place, pointlessly, just so you can use the very thing that allows you to play the rest of the game. It adds nothing.

So make it so only special attacks drain durabilty--not regular attacks. I don't fucking know.

It's not a fun mechanic either way.

We should probably stick to just general advice. These are kind of downright spoilers and a step-by-step walkthrough on how to get to something he would've just found if he paid more attention when backtracking a little. Not sure how Verb feels about this (and it is his call), but this kind of stuff would take away from the experience for me. Unless it's something incredibly obscure or he explicitly asks for it, I feel we should never give him a play-by-play on how to obtain certain items or get through some parts of the game. I feel that a "you missed something in the Burg, try walking back and looking around more attentively" would've been more than enough. Full on directions and a picture for reference goes very far, imo.
Tbh, I was the only one who was at least kind of considerate with giving advcse

v___v

You also shouldn't hoard your souls this much. I do the same for the consumable / itemized ones (and would recommend you keep doing it), but the ones you actually get from killing enemies? Use them when you can to level up or buy stuff. Every enemy in the game can be your demise and walking around with a lot of souls is not a good idea for a beginner.
Yeah, I was referring to the itemized ones specifically. I know very well at this point not to stockpile the other kind. :P

And just keep at it for now. Taurus really is a breaking point for many. Asylum Demon is very easy on purpose, Undead Burg part 1 is a cakewalk too, but now you're reaching the more meticulous parts. It's where I first stopped playing the game years ago before giving it another chance. You're doing fine. Just take it slow and easy.
All right, thanks again.

The frustration begins

good

we've all been there. learning the mechanics to the game is painful, but then again, challenging things should never be easy to learn and be comfortable with right away

it's really just the durability mechanic that i'm hung up on now

i just don't see the point--and that goes for any game that has any type of weapon degradation system

didn't like it in fallout 3--i'm not gonna like it here

I'm playing it again too and I honestly forgot it was even a thing. Like, I've never had a weapon in DS1 say durability is low, but I guess the scimitar is crap. Try different weapons. Long sword is always lovely.

Yeah, a mace is almost essential for some areas in Dark Souls 2. They're cheap and when you upgrade them, insanely good.

I enjoyed durability, to me it made some weapons a lot more interesting. Like how the Eastern weapons really required you to be bring a back up at the cost of them being fantastic dexterity weapons, or how it makes it so you can't spam special attacks on the dragon weapons and need to save them for big encounters.

At least they kind of fixed them now. Powerstancing maces power attack was one of the strongest things in the game like a year ago. You could infinitely stunlock most enemies and bosses, including the ruin sentinels, mytha, dragonriders, throne watcher and so on. It's what melee speedruns used to be like back in the day.
Yeah I did that for my no bonfire run for the ring to make my weapon invisible. I was proud of myself.

Yeah a diverse arsenal is always good. I did the same thing for BB.
