Some of my fondest memories playing video games are from Dark Souls PvP.
Still one of the most clever and fun multiplayers of any game I've ever played. Top tier PvP without a doubt.
i'll allow you to take "fun" with you

what's "clever" about it? the fact that it's woven into the lore? why is that clever

"top tier" is a nonsense description, given that backstabs are such a big part of it—pretty immersion-breaking, considering it would never happen in an actual fair swordfight, even with magic involved

also lag

Why is it not clever? It ties into the lore better than almost any game I've ever played. Most games have either no real explanation for it at all (you just match up with someone else and play the game) or have one that's extremely shallow (all characters are actually toys in a box or it's all just a simulation). Dark Souls multiplayer has a very detailed backstory that perfectly and seamlessly ties into the game's setting and lore without it being in a different menu or under specific conditions. Every covenant has its use, special perks and fits together nicely to create a certain type of balance in the world and many different experiences. The fact that you have the entire world to play with allows for enormous amounts of creativity and versatility that I really haven't seen in many other games. It's also surprisingly well balanced if you look at how everything fits together. For example, invaders have obvious benefits (element of surprise, invisible to AI enemies, usually get to choose the plan of attack) but they're in many ways countered as the host has several of his own (he can summon support, blue phantoms will come to his aid, he can heal while invaders cannot, if he makes it to the fog gate he instantly "wins" over the invader, his reward for killing the invader is greater than vice versa). I understand why you consider it unethical but it's still a very clever and well thought out system that's pretty damn unique.

And it's top tier because of that, the endless variety and the mechanical depth of the game. It's something you don't really notice during casual play but I would kind of compare it do Smash Bros (Melee). At first sight it's a pretty accessible game but there's a lot of hidden and often unintended techniques that can make it competitive and give it a lot more depth than you might have expected. Just like SSB has things like dash/L/move canceling, air dodges, wavedashing and ledge grabbing, Dark Souls has techniques like toggling, reverse rolls, free aiming, attack/spell cancels, dead angles, counter-damage, backstep poise and hotswapping that add a lot to it and make it much more competitive and interesting when you get to that level.

that's because most games of this nature don't operate under the pretense that they need to have an explanation for it

and even for the ones that do, like smash—why is it "shallow" to have smash be a representation of a child playing with his toys? i would actually consider that pretty ingenious—sure, it may not lend itself to the complexity and intrigue that a souls game would with its lore, but it's the sheer novelty of the concept that makes it so clever to me, because it can be used to justify even the game's most ridiculous match-ups (like pikachu vs. bayonetta vs. the duck hunt dog)

and if you know anything about subspace emissary, there's even more neat symbolism you can read into from that mode as well

the fact that dark souls went all the way with it, so to speak, doesn't really make it more or less "clever" than anything else—i would use the word ambitious, and that might be the word you're looking for as well, but it's not particularly clever because it doesn't exactly make me rethink how the game functions

"game world where player avatars can interact with each other" is not exactly the most groundbreaking concept, and it doesn't become more so when you say "oh and that's also the plot of the game"

anyone could've come up with that

Quote
Dark Souls multiplayer has a very detailed backstory that perfectly and seamlessly ties into bla bla bla
just so you know, i was originally trying to talk about the pvp completely detached from everything else about the game, including the lore, which is what i assumed you were doing as well

if not, then i guess i can take back what i said—i would say the lore is very rich and well thought-out, almost undeniably, but i think that's a separate concept

you're praising the lore's cleverness right now, not the multiplayer's

Nioh, on the other hand, while it has a fun PvP you have to actually search for people
wow I guess Nioh is worth more than $5 after all, I'm gonna get it now thanks
cringe

I'm gonna slide right in here and say that I did buy Nioh on the summer sale and I'm looking forward to playing it

Nice, feel free to ask me about anything or add me on Steam if you ever want help. Nioh can be pretty confusing when it comes to forging and some other stuff. Let me know what you think of it.

Two is real hit or miss with people. I thought it was great, but if you don't play online it's pretty boring.

Dark Souls 2 is great if you're willing to unlearn everything from Dark Souls 1.

Long live NoNolesNeckin.

Ya fuckin' ganderneck.
I like DKS2's gameplay about the same as 1's (except maybe the stamina cost of rolling) but the level design of 1 will always be the best.

This.

Also I know you dont like to mod but please install the unofficial patch for it. Itll make the experience not infuriating at times.

they're fun! i tend to favor the most conventionally difficult bosses because fighting them is super intense and it feels orgasmic when you finally take them out

also they have a cool design

the fight itself is also interesting for several reasons, because the abyss is such a weirdly perfect location to have the fight—it removes all depth perception, making it so the kings look farther away than they really are (which i always thought was an interesting effect) and allows both parties to have free movement, since there's literally nothing to keep your eye on but the boss itself

having more kings spawn the longer you take to defeat them is also an interesting mechanic

i'm honestly struggling to think of what not to like about it, really, unless you just don't like tougher bosses

even the music, which tends to range from bad-to-mediocre in this game, was one of the better themes

I'm struggling with putting names to fights because I haven't played dks1 in years, but my top 4 is something like

1. Artorias
2. Manus
(I really liked Artorias' moves, and Manus was just cool to me)
3. Sif
4. Gwyn

I really like the other games boss fights/bosses more, honestly
