Holy shit, Charlotte Brontë is one of the worst storywriters ever. "Jane Eyre" is so goddamn slow and boring. The author takes her time to describe every single insignificant detail of the main character's surroundings. It doesn't add to the story whatsoever. And the book describes Jane's thoughts and reaction to every single piece of dialogue.

And everyone says this book is great and interesting.
Is there anyone here who agrees with me? Or disagree?

A lot of literature from the 1800's has been pretty dry in my experience.

Yeah. Back when "good writing" meant forgetting Shakespeare's statement of Brevity being the soul of wit. Unfortunately there are too many writers praised for using lots of pretty words.

Purple prose should really only be used for the grotesque and gothic.

Chances are, the lurid descriptions do add to the story, and you're just a plebeian who doesn't get it.

It's okay that you don't, but I don't like when people try to act like they know better than the author.

Fellowship of the Ring

I think I got halfway through before quitting.

Not to mention that even with all the detail it was hard to get a clear picture of what was going on.

Honestly I just got bored of tom bombadil and the endless walk through the shire.

Like, it takes most of the book before we even meet aragorn, let alone go to rivendell or moria. If I pick it up again and just skip straight to those bits.

I stopped reading right after tom, Christ it was boring and confusing.

If you want an absolute snooze of a book try Halo Primordium. I'm about a third of the way in and literally all that has happened has been: people walked, they saw the gravemind and then begal walking the other way, and occasionally the talk to themselves. I haven't read a book I enjoyed this little since Verbatim's Biography Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher In The Rye is a masterpiece.

Everyone who hates it thinks you're supposed to agree with Holden and see him as a hero or some shit, but that's not the case. It's a character study, and he's ultimately a tragic person who uses this hyper-judgmental attitude as an emotional shield. Did you even read it to the end? He pretty much admits he was an asshole.

One of the key character establishing moments is when he sees the "fuck you" written on the elementary school walls and instantly gets all super pissed at the goddam monster who snuck into the school and wrote it, not even realizing it's 99% likely that one of the kids did.

I recommend you give it another read, it's really one of the most entertaining and sad books I've read.
