what's your favorite seinen manga/anime? for reference, seinen tends to be aimed at males in the 17-40s age range (the next step up from shounen.)

i really like hellsing, ghost in the shell: stand alone complex, flcl, and space dandy

Also, if Darker Than Black counts I'd include it in that list.
And Steins; Gate.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, if that counts. how do you figure out what falls under that classification? i feel like Hunter x Hunter would because of its powerful themes

also i definitely need to watch FLCL again. watched it like 4 years ago and i don't remember anything besides liking it lol

im not sure about jojo, but HxH is kinda like Fullmetal Alchemist; still definitely a shounen, but it deals with more mature themes than most works in the genre

Well, it was more than a little confusing. I watched it two years ago and I can't remember most of the characters names, let alone the events happening

it's supposed to be kinda confusing, since it's about puberty. it's hectic and beautiful and poetic

sounds like it's mostly based on the characters and style then. i think i'd consider JoJo a seinen then, and in that case it's certainly my favorite. hopefully im right tho

I wonder how different age groups perceive it. Are the younger fans more understanding because they're going through it at the time, or is it more confusing because they're not familiar with the concepts it tackles. Can older people reflect more strongly from more experience, or is the medium used too foreign from their experiences to convey information as readily.
Moreover, can anyone get what the hell happens in the show, or is it ambiguous like the End of Evangelion with more nebulous nuances to emphasize the confusion factor?

well, it was originally published in Shonen Jump, but has since been moved over to the seinen magazine Ultra Jump, so you are more than likely correct. i would guess that it straddles the line between the two with relative grace

i would guess younger kids would identify with the setting and hectic style. the whole living at home thing, relationship issues, new people coming into your life, not really being in control of the things that are happening around you. older people are probably more receptive to the overall themes and more appreciative of the aesthetic decisions.

this is why i love it so much. it's so nuanced and so incredibly poetic, there are so many different ways and reasons people might enjoy it.

Paranoia Agent comes to mind in this category, both seinen and ambiguous titles. Then again, I had pneumonia and couldn't process anything, so I may have missed a lot of detail from being sick.
On a side note, watching Fullmetal Alchemist when you're sick is strangely satisfying... More than you'd expect.

i feel the same way about big o... something about being delirious makes me not care about how nonsensical it is

The Nasuverse in general. However that stuff is mainly light novels and visual novels with a few anime adaptations.

While the Kara no Kyoukai and Fate/Zero retain what I guess would be qualified as seinen in their adaptations. Unlimited Blade Works (while good) seems to fall more into a shounen category since all of the internal monologue is gone. Which sucks, because it could be argued that Fate/Stay Night is about Shirou's personal journey in dealing with his psychological trauma with the Holy Grail War as the backdrop.

What makes for a good novel though doesn't always translate well into what's good for a TV series.

If Jojo qualifies, like someone else said, then Jojo.
Otherwise, not a lot of Seinen grabs my attention.
