Concept of a Freighter I intend to model and texture.

Fluff text
Freighters like these spend the majority of their time split between the long Hohmann Transfer Orbits taking physical cargo between the planets of the Solar system and in dock, recieving maintenance and being outfitted. They are generally equipped only with simple chemical combustion engines as opposed to more advanced Fission and Fusion designs used on starliners and warships, as they are intended to be low-cost vehicles even f that means the cargo they carry takes many months or years to reach its' destination.

Because of the amount of time these vessels are in space, they are almost entirely automated, except for no more than a half-dozen maintenance personnel there to fix anything the on-board maintenance drones cannot, and to act as the human commanding element of a large spacecraft (In keeping with interplanetary regulations on unmanned spacecraft forbidding large and high-mass vessels to be entirely automated). These half-dozen personnel are expected to live in microgravity for extended periods of time even with the addition of a centrifuge for recreation. Despite this, crews rarely have to do much in the way of actually maintaining the ship, meaning vessels must be equipped with recreational facilities to keep crew entertained (Though some also stock cryogenic storage facilities). The pay afforded to crew is initially fairly high, though expenses removed for feeding/ sheltering a crewmember, providing their medical care and other such duties on behalf of the parent company leave the remaining pay fairly meagre. Oftentimes, the crew embarking on such a vessel are merely temporary residents who sign on for a one-way trip to the Outer System's resource extraction facilities and orbital colonies.

As for the cargo carried by the freighters, it largely depends on the destination. Departing from Earth will usually bring luxury foods and items unable to be manufactured in the Jovian and Chronian systems such as meat, chocolate, "real" foods, and so forth, while returning vessels will typically carry advanced polymers synthesised in Titan's hydrocarbon lakes and rare earth metals like Palladium, Gold and Iridium mined in the Asteroids.

Due to the launch windows utilised by these ships every few months (Depending on planetary alignment), flotillas of Freighters, Tankers, Asteroid Tugs, Starliners*, Hydroponics Vessels, Orbital Guard escort frigates and merchant vessels will all travel on a similar trajectory. As such, they rarely travel alone, and the nature of space means that piracy is largely impossible - meaning Freighters can make huge mass savings on weaponry/ defensive systems (Or lack of such). However, at least one crew member will be trained in microgravity combat.

Oh, and if you're wondering why the solar panels are facing away from the sun in the image, it's because they're not solar panels. They're heat radiators. At the end of a burn, they will glow red-hot for days or weeks as they gradually cool.

Also also: there should be two centrifuges but I forgot to add the other. There needs to be two spinning in opposite directions so that they both counteract the other's rotation and stop the vessel as a whole being sent on a wild trajectory. In the model I'll probably make the space between them and the cargo a bit larger so they can fold down when the ship is accelerating/ decelerating.

One of the Asteroid Tugs I mentioned in my last post.

Spoiler
While many orbital colonies make their livings mining larger asteroids for their mineral value, digging into the rocks and building their homes inside them, some Earth and Mars-based resource extraction companies prefer to bring the asteroids home as to reduce the costs of flying out, mining and bringing the minerals home. These asteroid tugs have their propulsion mounted in front of their cargo, pulling the habitation module and asteroid behind the vessel. Like Freighters, most Tugs are powered with chemical engines, though they aren't used in quite the same way. To set off from Earth, the tug uses arrays of orbital/ lunar PHALANX laser batteries to propel its solar sail, using the destination's laser arrays to slow the vessel. From here is the lengthy process of mounting the asteroid firmly on the ship, so that it won't break under the stress of acceleration and deceleration. The ship then fills its' fuel tank, and sets off home once again propelled by lasers. However, the difference here is that to decelerate, the more powerful chemical engines are ignited for a long and powerful burn, bringing the ship to a halt in high orbit around the planet in question, where the asteroid is moved to an orbital refinery and the ship prepares to set off again.

Asteroid Tugs utilise Brachistochrone trajectories, meaning they can launch at any time of year as they do not need to wait for planetary alignment. They are also often utilised to tug derelict ships from interplanetary space into orbit for scrapping, and smaller variants are utilised in the Chronian Rings to collect rocks to take to refineries in the orbit of Saturn. Similarly, these ships are utilised within the asteroid belt to bring large rocks into the space around Ceres, where the rocks are then bought/ sold to companies on Earth who use their own tugs to transport the rocks home.
