"Ornate chandeliers suspended from a vaulted ceiling lit the spacious chamber; Jack tilted his gaze overhead and noticed how far away they were.  His thoughts wove around those bright lights, like a dance of ether masses spiraling in precious unison. Why must we try to clutch desperately for the mere threads of this world when we can clasp onto a tapestry of untold magnificence beyond this plane of existence?"
Ideally, he's on the money. I just wish Common Core was more effective

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
I'm not even sure you can teach creativity.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.
And then we implement more standardized tests to make sure they're being creative enough, right?

But I support Common Core. . .

And so does Jeb Bush.

too bad that's a load of horse shit and they still teach math the way they always did.

the only thing they've changed is what kind of math they teach in each grade.

They've done away with times tables at the three middle schools my brother attended.

Common Core wouldn't have been a problem  if they would have just started with changing the standards at a Kindergarten level, and continued it through the class's graduation. The biggest problem is the massive shift in standards leaving gaps in the classroom knowledge of students.

What the fuck are manipulatives.
to my understanding, they're like physical objects that you fuck about with, and you can glean from them various mathematical concepts

which i don't oppose--tactile learning/firsthand learning is kinda how i like to be taught things

think Legos and shit

That seems....very dependent. You ain't gonna carry a big rubix cube type deal on you later on in life to solve math problems or remember your various math tables.

Of course older people just use calculators. But still.

Seems awkward. I remember my multiplication tables because one of my teachers turned them into songs. Sticks like glue.

Nowhere in the common core materials does it outline HOW to teach a subject, only what subjects are covered at what grade levels. Any teachers pulling that shit are doing it on their own.

True, but we can create an environment that nourishes, instead of deprives creativity.

The federal government may not mandate that it's taught a specific way, but on the state/county level it's possiblly true.

Possible - sure. But that isn't what's happening. The "HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THIS CRAZY WAY OF DOING MATH" is mostly just viral conservative bullshit to smear Common Core as some liberal propaganda to enslave children to shitty ways of thinking.

I'm still not a fan of Common Core; it's touted as the opposite of "no child left behind" while essentially being the same thing. All they've done is swap out learning milestones; and we won't even know if that had any effect for a few years.

Well it's better than doing fuck-all of nothing and hoping to achieve better results, which is what our previous system was.
