How do the notifications work?

I haven't been here for a while and I was wondering how the notification system works. I know on there is a tab on the TapTalk app for it, but I can't find anything on the desktop version.

I didn't know about it and I'm frugal with my money.

EDIT: it's installed on the test forum but of course it's not working and I wasn't given a parse list so I can fix it. We're waiting on support to respond to my ticket and until then you're stuck with the shitty notifications.
