Only over-sensitive babies say this.
Judge me all you want. Couldn't give less of a fuck, just like I'm perfectly entitled to judge you.

I've been thinking about this recently, and it's probably obvious to the more politically astute members of the forum, but the more I realise, everything that happened during the Cold War, directly or indirectly, advanced us technologically and stabilized us politically.
Ever since Sputnik the US had been competing with the Soviet Union in a large scale dick measuring contest to see who could get to the Moon faster and break scientific barriers. Not to mention the relatively stable amount of peace that we experienced for a couple decades out of fear of eviscerating the planet's surface.
Does anyone think that kind of intense competition would be beneficial for us again? We've already begun stagnating in regards to space exploration, so maybe we do need some kind of kick up the arse. Thoughts?

Haven't seen a proper thread made on this yet oddly enough.
As usual, a lot of my Facebook friends are allowing their emotions to dictate the situation and resorting to knee jerk reactions. They all seem to think that letting in swaths of people unregulated will lead to little to no difficulties for some reason.
Jordan has allegedly taken in a substantial amount, but they've yet to be integrated into cities, and I suspect it won't be long until the refugee camps turn into ghettos. Chancellor Merkel has stated Germany intends to take in more, and David Cameron has plans for the UK to increase asylum for more refugees. The Eastern European countries seem very reluctant to integrate any refugees, with Hungary PM controversially stating "Muslims are not welcome."
Thoughts?

It's a beneficial economic phenomenon to anyone who has a penchant for greed.
I'm talking about policy makers; "good idea" is supposed to refer to the net benefit to society as a whole, not if some CEO can line his pockets on the basis of other people's misery.
You've started the presupposition that all policy makers are good ones, and that's just simply not the case. Human nature finds a way.

There's zero evidence to suggest that private prisons are any better than state or federal prisons
There's some evidence in the UK that private prisons are indeed better, but other evidence I've seen kind of suggests that "study" is bullshit.
The incentives are all wrong in this instance; it makes no sense. Why the fuck would anybody think profiting off people's imprisonment is a beneficial economic phenomenon? It's like profiting off the ownership of individuals, and we all know how that turned out.
Dude, if there's money to be made regardless of how morally reprehensible it may be, you're guaranteed to find someone trying to exploit it. It's a beneficial economic phenomenon to anyone who has a penchant for greed.

I'm confused. Does she work for the county or is this a private business? Because if it's the latter then it is indeed, an infringement of religious liberty.
> Separation of court and religion.
Yeah I'm aware that's why I asked for the clarification. OT: Not sure what there is to discuss besides the fact that she's a butthurt homophobe that didn't get her way.

I've heard it akin to going to a breast cancer fundraiser and complaining that nobody is talking about lung cancer there. They're separate issues; black-on-black crime is a social problem, whereas BLM is addressing a systemic problem that can be addressed by Congress, governors, and the courts. Okay, sure, but the name Black Lives Matter kind of implies that well, black lives matter, and the only thing killing black people more disproportionately than racially motivated crime is black on black crime. You think they would be prioritising.
I can't think of a single social equality movement that has attempted to address every issue the group faces. Are you also going to shit on suffragettes for not also working to get equality for women in the workplace?
Firstly, you can drop the condescending tone, thanks.
Secondly, I did not say BLM had to encapsulate every issue the black community currently endures. I said considering that the movement is literally called "Black Lives Matter" you would think black on black crime would be at the top of their list seeing as how it is a substantially larger problem that kills more black males than racial hate crime does.
I'm not sure how to explain it any better. It's a pointed criticism of the legal system's neglect of judicial equality -- a succinct way of explaining their platform. The main criticism you have is of the phrase itself, as if that's what really matters here. It's not.
No, my main criticism is that, much like all these other movements that allegedly like to champion black equality, completely neglect to address the predominant problems that the black community faces. As was aforementioned, we already have primary figureheads like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton vested in the cause for judicial equality for black people, as well as a myriad of other activists/movements. Yet nobody seems to want to confront the colossal problem of black on black crime, which is what the point of the video and thread was.

Okay, you can simultaneously recognize that institutionalized racism does exist in many parts of America, which is the main platform of #BLM, and that there is a serious trend of black-on-black crime that the community and the nation needs to be concerned about. They're not mutually exclusive. Of course people only say "black lives matter" when a white person kills them; that's literally what the movement is about.
I'm curious as to why it doesn't seem to want to address the most pertinent issues facing the black community. Not to mention that a lot of its members consist of mendaciously suspicious characters. Of course, racial hate crime against blacks is a problem, that pretty much goes without saying. But welfare and black on black crime are the two biggest problems irreparably damaging the black community right now, and yet BLM never seem to want to tackle them.

I've said this millions of times. You won't find Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson crying themselves to sleep because some kids shot each other up in LA or Chicago or New York.
Fact is they don't care. They only want to be involved when it's something racial so they can be on TV and feel important and feel like they're resisting oppressors or some shit.
It's pretty fucking tragic too, because all the spokespeople and the movements that allegedly fight for the issues within the black community all turn out to be huge fucking frauds or mendacious characters. E.g. Rachel Dolezal, Jesse Jackson, Shaun King. What is it about the BLM that is attracting all these disingenuous people?
