The Flood / Re: your most anticipated film of 2015?
« on: October 22, 2015, 06:34:29 AM »
Released or unreleased? Because every great film this year has pretty much been released sans the Revenant and Episode VII.

Still need to get round to seeing Sicario, heard good things about it. The Martian too.

What basis are you guys using that Christianity was a beneficial force throughout history? Just curious, because a lot of this just seems to be conjecture and speculation.

In all seriousness the guy acts like this was a pivotal turning point in Hitler's decision but anyone that's studied the Holocaust knows the final solution was an incremental process that gradually exacerbated as the war went on. I support Israel, but this guy just seems to be stirring shit for the sole purpose of stirring shit.

Literally borefest the rapper.

His songs are all right for a trashy night out that adds to the overall ambiance of the evening. He's pretty much interchangeable with Drake, Jay Z and all the other indiscernible mainstream rap artists that are all shitting up the hip hop scene right now.

Our outrage culture has become so absurdly prominent that we are now experiencing manufactured outrage over another manufactured outrage.

Society is dead.

At least he doesn't get a fucking boner when she does.

Serious / Re: Woman arrested for being 'Islamophobic' on a bus
« on: October 21, 2015, 12:06:50 PM »
Why is everyone ignoring that she threatened to donkey kick the woman's baby out? There are few countries that wouldn't arrest you for that.
I don't think anybody has ignored that. You, and a few others, responded to Turkey's post when he brought it up.

Then this is a pretty easy to judge case. What's the discussion? She wasn't arrested for simply being racist.
The discussion is whether it's right or necessary to also tag the crime with Islamophobia.

My personal opinion is that hate crimes are real, and should be persecuted more severely. To me, what separates a crime and a hate crime is the intent. If I shoot you for say your wallet, just you are the victim. If I shoot you because you're Muslim, my intent is to terrorize the entire Muslim community. The scope of victims is much broader.

Sure, in both cases you are just as dead. But in one just your family is traumatized. The other an entire community is.
And Muslims get extra special victimization points, why?

That toilet scene though
Despite it being set in Edinburgh (the objectively better city) nearly all of Trainspotting is filmed in Glasgow, sans the opening scene.

Glasgow is the epicentre of scumminess preventing the rest of oor country from advancing.

I don't care what kind of tenuous assessment they conducted. The UK establishment parties are not Authoritarian Right, least of all the fucking Lib Dems.

I'm almost convinced that some of these questions are politically loaded.

But anyway:

They've definitely got the right to ban sale and possession of drugs.
And why is that again?

Commerce Clause, Necessary and Proper Clause, and the 10th Amendment which disseminates all other powers to the states, who have deferred to Congressional laws, e.g., the Controlled Substance Act.

The government doesn't explicitly have the right to regulate what substances you put into your body, but they sure as hell have the right to regulate harmful substances from entering the economy or be produced domestically.
That's a very pedantic way of justifying the government's capacity to dictate our lives.

Thanks.

I support total legalization of almost every recreational drug. I'm just providing the legal reasoning the courts have used for decades to justify drug prohibition.
Okay, but not really sure why you're appealing to the law when we're clearly trying to debate the merit of it.

Because I was asked by two people what the legal basis of the government's prohibition on drugs is and felt like contributing to the thread academically instead of the usual echo chamber about immutable liberty and such.
The OP specified whether it is a right the government should reserve. It's all very nice clarifying the logistical basis of criminalizing drugs, but that's not really what we're here to discuss, is it?

OT: No it doesn't. I suppose there's an argument to be made about the state's role in regulating illicit substances, just like say, guns for example, but arbitrarily declaring them inaccessible has pretty much resulted in universal failure, both legislatively and morally.

The Iraq War was pretty much inevitable though, regardless of Bush's presidency and Blair's tenure as PM.
