I don't understand where this is coming from. You just asked if the Federal government could overrule the state government and take control of the situation, which they can. But what would the federal government do in that situation that they haven't done already and can't already be handled by the state/city government?

Are you seriously trying to argue that the massively funded federal government which is designed to respond to situations like this, with specialised forces and scientists at their disposal, is at all comparable to a state trooper whose 9 to 5 job it is to patrol the highway?
I swear, you yanks would have literal walkers roaming the streets and you'd still be like "I am a PROUD Trump supporter and I will gladly DIE on the job at Foot Locker if it means the federal government stays out of our lives!"

Federal government = more resources and better equipment to deal with national crises. State government pertains to LOCALISED issues, which is clearly not what you are dealing with here. I'm not even American and even I can grasp that basic concept. Why is this so difficult for you.

Theoretically yes, but what difference does it make with the Fed controlling the police force and national guard when the jobs of both are still "Roam the streets and enforce curfews on non-essential workers"?

And federal government can overrule the state in a time of crisis no?

I just don't understand why you're so averse to a rational response to this. COVID-19 doesn't give a fuck about your opinions or political alignments.

Police force is operated by city and state governments. And the governor of the state deploys the national guard IIRC.

>biggest, most advanced military in the world
>modernised police force
>difficult to lockdown

Sometimes I think Americans know less about their society than the rest of the world does.

I mean, there are measures by the national government, but things like enforcing a lock down or keeping people at home would be difficult for the national government to do.

It's an international crisis affecting multiple countries and unions my man. Italy is reporting 500 plus deaths a day. Spain isn't far behind. Given the current trajectory the US is on you guys look to be giving them a run for their money in the coming days. If that doesn't warrant federal/national government intervention instead of state intervention then I'm not sure what does.

You brought up emergencies; and my issue isn't the government, it's people not relying on their local/state government.

Using hurricanes as a comparison isn't exactly the best example for a contagious virus that isn't restricted by geography or climate.

Bit weird that this contagion is literally on the verge of ripping the arse out of your country and what's concerning you the most is the 'gubberment'.

I'm not saying that the federal level shouldn't exist, or that it shouldn't be in charge of things. What I'm saying is that people will often ignore their state/local governments when those are perfectly reasonable institutions for such situations. I distinctly remember back in 2012/2013 one guy was going state to state trying to abolish the death penalty via their state governments, made significantly more progress than any federal push on the issue. I live in Florida where we're known for being slapped in the face by hurricanes non-stop, but all those strict building codes, reconstruction, and other forms of aid came from state of Florida, very little actually gets to us in the form of federal assistance.

Also I find it ironic making such a statement on being unified yet Italy and most other European countries are struggling with the virus themselves despite the EU being a thing.

What's the point in being a unified country then? What's the point in even having a federal government if not for enacting emergency powers for this very reason?

The "my area isn't affected yet so we don't need to do anything" mentality needs to stop. It's that very mindset which has gotten Europe into the mess it's in right now. Fuck, morons in the UK were treating it like a holiday weekend yesterday, so now the government has had to step in. The containment phase is past the point of no return now. The sooner countries (and states I guess?) start taking this pandemic more seriously the sooner we can resume our lives.

The responsibility falls to state governments. Just because New York has numerous cases doesn't mean South Dakota needs to take the same measures New York is. What good would federal meddling do? It would just cause more problems in South Dakota, and I'm speaking as somebody that lives in a big state. I've been saying this for years now: the US federal government is an incompetent bureaucratic mess and people need to stop trying to get things done on a federal level.

I'm surprised the country isn't on a federal lockdown tbh, if that's even possible. Don't really know the ins and outs of US government emergency responses to a crisis like this, but you think it would have happened by now.

You're the third most affected country in the world. New York state alone has higher cases than the entirety of the UK.

Then again, Trump.

Is it because of some misinformed boomer Facebook post that's been making the rounds?

2020 most anticpated?

-Tenet

Can't say I've ever disliked a Nolan film, despite his occasional memery dialogue. I'm excited to see him return to Sci fi, and its always great seeing Pattinson appearing in more and more kino. He's pretty much reinvented himself after Twilight.

-Dune

Amazing cast and Villeneuve back at the helm. Curious to see how he's progressed from BR2049.

-The Many Saints of Newark

Bit worried about the director on this one but as a Sopranos fan I'm certainly not going to be avoiding it.

-Last Night in Soho

Not particularly that intrigued by the premise but it's Edgar Wright so I'll be giving it a watch nonetheless.

So the Irishman was the snub of the night, right?

It really should have gotten cinematography the more I think about it. I haven't seen 1917 but what from what I heard it's Oscar is somewhat undeserved given its whole gimmick is its editing and camerawork?

I mean take a look at this and tell me that's not Oscar worthy.

This was pretty much his last acting role and the academy had an opportunity to let him bow out with some kind of recognition but instead they gave it to a mid tier actor who hasn't been good since the 90s.

Nothing against Brad Pitt, but let's keep it real here.

Brad Pitt? Really?

He was playing a cool character but a better performance than Pesci? Nah.

261
Predictions for tonight?

Picture:

1917. It's the bookies favourite and war films are notoriously good for striking a chord with the academy so I'd be really surprised if this doesn't win.

Actor:

My boy Joaquin. Is there even any doubt?

Actress:

Feel like Scarjo is gonna nab it.

Supporting Actor:

Could either be Pesci or Pacino. My money's on Pesci.

Supporting Actress:

N/A. Haven't really seen any of the movies they're starring in apart from Laura Dern in Marriage Story but I already gave my opinion about that film.

Director:

Bong Joon-Ho. Its possible Sam Mendes could take it too.

It's not an Oscar film but I saw Uncut Gems  on Saturday and what else can I say other than that the Safdie's have usurped Villeneuve as the most compelling up and coming directors in the indie film scene for me right now.

What a spellbinding film. Still undecided as to whether it's better than Good Time (not sure that it is), but bruh, the production and camera work in this film is mwah. Little touches like showing the characters using 2012 (the year the film' set) iPhone and iMessage technology really added to the film's immersion.

My only gripes would probably be the pacing, although I'm maybe a bit too accustomed to Good Time's breakneck pacing and went in with a different expectation. Need to give it a 2nd watch without that mentality.

Also not really on board the hype train for Sandler's performance. He's certainly competent, but I disagree with the calls for his nomination in retrospect.

I feel like giving it a 9/10 just because it has a sick ending, but it's probably closer to an 8/10 realistically.

265

Idk, the film just feels like too much of a chore to watch. The main problem I have with it is that we're explained through exposition and monologue about this couples' relationship and experiences together, but we never actually get to connect or see what they go through, just the back end of a really messy separation. So there's a bit of a disconnect there for me right from the get go.

And yeah, you can argue the film was never really intending to portray the trials and tribulations of a relationship from beginning to end, which is fair enough. But if I don't know or see how they arrived at the position they find themselves in throughout the movie, it really doesn't resonate with me all that much.

I feel like Her (also coincidentally starring Scarjo) does a much better job of portraying and executing the emotional conclusion of a relationship. I can connect with that film more because it takes us through those awkward initial phases of a fledgling relationship, right up until the earth shattering moment your significant other you've invested so much emotional time and energy into (spoilers if anyone's interested) grows apart and wants to move on.

But apples and oranges I guess.

266
Okay so I gave Marriage Story a viewing and I think it's hot garbo.

Everything sans maybe the performances (which I think are kind of overrated) is milquetoast.

The film's main selling point is that it presents how people realistically behave in the breakdown of a relationship, but I don't think it even executed that.

This couple do not interact like normal human beings. I don't think it helps that the characters are both hot shit professional artists with no inkling of relatibility or grit to them. Like, oh wow, he's energy conscious and she's extremely talkative, am I supposed to feel something here because you listed off a bunch of idiosyncrasies these characters have? Nah.

There are some okay segments but good god was this a struggle to get through. That argument scene was entertaining but for all the wrong reasons. I was legitimately pissing myself at Adam Driver yeeting himself into a wall only for him to ree like an incel. Not a convincing performance at all.

Scarjo probably carried the film, but I've never considered that much of a heavy hitting actress, so that's not really saying much.

Cringe/10 film.

I was hoping Adam Sandler and Willem Dafoe to at least get some sort of nod this year.

But nope. Not a mention.

What the fuck even is Pain and Glory? I've literally never heard of it until these nominations came out.

Two Pope's can fuck off as well. Oscar worthy my arse.

Is the academy even aware of the Safdie brothers at this point? Two Oscar potential films of theirs completely ignored.

2019 lists?

Mines are

Album: slowthai - Nothing Great About Britain. Have never been a fan of grime but this album fully converted me. I saw him live in Glasgow and he has the potential to be the Bowie of Grime. Phenomenal artist.

TV: Chernobyl, but if we're not counting mini series then The Boys.

Movies: Right now it's Joker although I'm fully expecting this to change as I have my crosshairs on The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems when they get a full release in the UK. Haven't been fully attentive to movies this year due to limited releases for independent films.

Game: idk, fucking Borderlands 3 maybe? This year was atrocious. Outer Worlds was good but there's just something lacking in it that warrants a spot here. Didn't hook me as much as it did everyone else.
