The Flood / Re: Are automatic weapons all that dangerous?
« on: January 15, 2015, 09:05:32 PM »
...Well, yeah. A gun that can fire half a dozen bullets in one second is probably more likely to kill somebody than a gun that fires just one bullet per trigger-squeeze.

Debatable.

It's down to cartridge, recoil, weight of the firearm, and shooter ability.

There is a reason why they call it "Full Retard."

Yeah, but at the end of the day the odds of six pieces of burning-hot metal getting fired in rapid succession is more likely to kill someone than just one.

It depends entirely on the firearm, the cartridge, the recoil, and the shooter's ability.

Look at it this way. You have your street choppers. The Infamous Mac-10. It's an open bolt sub machine gun in 9mm Luger. It's incredibly light and short. It has a cyclic rate of 1250 rounds per minute. The bolt is easily the heaviest part of the gun past the magazine. When you pull the trigger the bolt is going to slam forward, hit the primer, fire the round and scream back to continue the cycle. You have the majority of the weight slamming into the back of the gun pulling the muzzle up. You may get one or two rounds off where you aim, but the rest are going to start going wild.

Different autos have different ways to compensate. The AR and AK platform each have a recoil spring in the butt stock to reduce that felt recoil and keep the muzzle on target, but it only does so much. The M1918 Thompson had a commentator that vented gas upward at the muzzle to keep it down and prevent muzzle rise.

Fact of the matter is, it's difficult to keep your muzzle on target when firing full auto. There is literally no practical reason to use it in any situation where you can take an extra half second to line up for a second shot with a semi-auto. Unless of course you are using a firearm with almost to muzzle climb or felt recoil.

It's designed to put a shitload of rounds downrange to make the enemy stay in cover so that your men can move forward and then kill the enemy with their semi-auto AR's.
Man, now I'm convinced that it's logical to sell them to ordinary civilians.

Who cares what you think. You ain't the boss of us.

Eh.

Automatic fire is more for suppressing an enemy than actually killing them. If you can keep the enemies head down you can get a team out to flank them and neutralize them. That's one of the big reasons why a SAW gunner is in every rifle squad. They put enough volume of fire downrange to let the other guys get into a position to kill the bad guys.

Even when you move onto Machineguns like the M240, M60, etc... It's mostly down to suppressing the enemy rather than killing them.

I see no civilian practical purpose for Full retard other than it being fun and awesome. I'd never own a full retard gun because I'd never afford the ammo. Though of the Hughes amendment was repealed and NFA took a nose dive and all new rifles were select fire, I guess I'd have one.

I'd much rather be pumping rounds downrange in semi-automatic. I care more about shot placement over volume of fire.

Hey man, I liked to pretend I was a cowboy.
Except I had a .38 and not a .45
And it was a Smith and not a Colt.

lolonly.38.
Wait...
Yeah, put that in your nine and suck it.

Depends on what .38.

.380 might fit. .38acp is similar to 9 in case length. .38 special is to long unlike you.

Ok, good.

Like I said, great keyboard. Good macros. Great color. Nice keys if a bit worn now. But, it's got the MW3 logo on it... Meh, what ever, it was 35 dollars when it normally retails for 80.

Is that a Call of Duty MW3 keyboard?

Why yes it is. I got it for 35 bucks through a promotion. Just a branded Logitech G105. Great Keyboard, kinda dig the green. Dislike the logo. Haven't been bothered to scrape it off yet.

Wouldn't say they are small. They have 38 locations in the IE. Thing is, they are ONLY in the IE and no where else.

I live in Southern California. The Inland Empire to be exact. Those of us lucky to reside in San Bernardino or Riverside county know of a 'local' fast food joint called Bakers. Bakers only serves the inland empire. They have fucking amazing food. Burgers, Tacos, burritos, and a lot more. I'm not afraid to say that they blow In-N-Out out of the water. Well, their ground beef in particular is like the best ground beef in the world. They mix something amazing with it and let it simmer for days I imagine. Because of this their ground beef burritos are to die for. Just Ground beef, taco sauce, and cheese.

Well to my point.

I'm going to be finally moving out of California soon. Not entirely sure when, but it'll be soon. This makes me glee at the thought of leaving, but the loss of my favorite place to get a burger or burrito, Bakers, saddens me profusely. So, I've been trying to figure out their ground beef recipe, but I simply cannot replicate it.

So being the cheeky bastard I am, I emailed their corporate asking for the secret formula to the ground beef. It was all a joke, never expected a real reply.

Well a few days later, I get an email. It's their corporate basically saying, "Hey, enjoyed the comment. We can't give you the 'secret formula' because it's proprietary. But thanks for being a great customer!"

Well, I got this in the mail today.
Spoiler

Spoiler
All those menu items contain the ground beef that I wanted to know the recipe to.

Well played Bakers, well played.

Spoiler
Still, see why I love Bakers? It's a great business. They are always giving out free shit and coupons with awesome discounts. Not to mention that sense of humor.

There I was, Assistant Auto Rifleman in Alpha 2. We had just landed on the Island of Thirsk near the town of Thirsk in the dead of winter. The was heavy cloud cover but the air was still.

Our objective was the town. Russians had a HQ there and we were tasked with destroying it. Simply enough task...

As we made our way toward the objective, snow crunching under our feet, the squads were alive with nervous laughter and jokes. Someone mentioning that the snow sounds like Styrofoam and others chuckling in agreement. Just then over our PRC-343 we get a report from Alpha 1 that they had spotted contact about 300 meters to our front. My team was not in a position to see the contact so we maneuvered into a firing position. But before we can really do anything, the contact passes by and ignores us. In the end, this may have been a good thing. We had a terrible position. My team and Alpha 3 were deep in defilade. Behind us was a ridge and to retreat would mean climbing a hill under enemy fire.

Comamand moved us closer to the beach. Thirsk is a small island and the town has a beach on it's eastern side. This beach was considerably lower in elevation than the town. Maybe 10 meters?  Well as soon as we got close we were spotted and all hell broke loose. PKM and Ak-74 fire was almost incessant. I huddled behind a rock trying my best to call targets for my Auto-rifleman. before I knew it, our Fire team lead was dead. The Auto rifleman took command. That's when the GP-25 gernades started landing. I took a hit from shrapnel. By this time Alpha 1 and 3 were smoking the shit out of the beach giving us some minor concealment. So, I managed to bandage and get the call for a medic out.

This is when it really started turning to shit.

Bravo Squad had been pinned in the forest we were in. They were literally getting ripped apart. Sporadic 7.62x54r bullets from PKMs, almost constant 5.45x39 fire from AK-74s, occasional GP-25 rifle grenades and to our terror, the sound of a 20mm Auto cannon. In time the friendly M-16 and M249 fire slowed and then stopped. Bravo had, while not quite wiped, but decimated beyond combat effectiveness. They moved to link up with us.

Problem was, Bravo brought the hell to us. While we were under fire, they were in a maelstrom of angry slavs. At this time I am hit again and pass out. When I wake up, my team is dead save for the team's Rifleman. There we were, huddled behind a rock under sporadic fire. That's when I heard it. The slow lumbering roar of a tracked vehicle. it was the owner of the autocanon that had fucked up Bravo. Thankfully my Rifleman had an AT4 light anti-tank launcher. He fired and the M136 rocket hit home. The armor, a BMP-3, started cookin off hard. The PKT ammunition belts exploded and the 20mm cannon rounds flew off into all directions. It was like fourth of July. Theeeeen another one rolled up. My Rifleman caught a PKT burst and died.

So there I was, cowered behind a rock, crying, as an angry Russian armored vehicle looked for me. Finally it fucked off looking for other days to ruin. So I scavenged what I could off the rifleman. A bandage and a few extra mags is all I got. Over my squads channel was the call for a general retreat. So I got up and started running back North. Thats when an Angel of mercy came in in the form of an AH-1Z Super Cobra. Halle-fuckin-lujah. It was then promptly ripped apart by 20mm Auto cannon fire.

That's when it felt like something jumped up and bit me in the buttocks. Except this thing crippled me and killed my legs. I had to crawl the rest of the way to the extract. I bandaged and started my journey, passing out two more times before finally passing out on the beach, on a desolate wintery island, with hundreds of Russians crawling all over the place.

ArmA 2, Losing is fun.
