That really doesn't look that difficult to make.

It really isn't. It's a simple cylinder with a few lines to add definition.

I could turn something like this in maybe 20 minutes depending on how big the block is that I start with. Lathe work is relatively easy.
If you only had a saw, a knife, and some sandpaper then it would be more impressive.

I don't see why you're going on about it being beautiful when it could easily be made in 20 minutes with the proper tools.

Because there is something about lathe turned wood that brings out the most beautiful grain. When you construct something out of flat parts, like say a cutting board or box, you only really get one aspect of the wood grain. It's always running in one direction. With a lathe you get the grain swirling and turning and looping around. Such as this pen I turned.

How ever, a lathe is difficult to use. a Beginner could not walk up and turn that hand guard. I should know, I busted three pens due to a mix of poor wood and poor form. So to someone who knows what they are doing, that hand guard would be easy and popped out in 20 minutes for the CA finish.

This is more something I'd attempt though. Three distinct sides similar to an A1 style handguard. With plunging router cuts and router cut handholds.

Not to mention the beautiful black walnut.

The stock and grip, however, were likely cut out on a band saw and hand shaped to that form. That'd be time consuming and difficult.

I wish I was a gun enthusiast so I could appreciate what you said more :(

This is the wood worker and gun enthusiast talking. I love lathe work like this. Taking a square block of wood and turning it into something nicely contoured and symmetrical. I do admit, the lines the wood worker put into that piece are a little bland. It doesn't really add much definition to the piece at all.

i have something similar on my staircase handrail

Do you also appreciate good hard wood?

Look at the quality lathe work that went into the construction of that hand guard.

I should totally turn a hand guard on a lathe for shiggles. Though I'd use Walnut and I'd give my hand guard a bit more definition.

NOTHING GETS ME HARDER THAN HARD WOOD HAND GUARDS

It's interface is hellacious on ps4 or else I would

You'd be missing out playing it on PS4 anyway. From my experience PS4 players get regularly #rekt.

Tanks is where they excel for the most part. But a competent player, like me, who uses the control surface keys on a keyboard will out turn and out fight a PS4 player every day of the week.

What are you going to do with the ammo? Kill people?

With standard pressure fmj? Lol!

If that 2 year old could kill his mom in one shot with her CC gun that was in her purse, then the sky is the limit.

Cc ammo =/= fmj.

Admittedly I keep a mag of fmj in my gun while it's in safe. But that's because something is better than nothing. FMJ is not good defensive ammo. It's solid leading to over pens and little damage transferred to tissue compared to jhp or hell even soft point

I have GTA v for 360 and I have about 200 rounds of lol9mm.

I think you're looking too far in to what a "redesign" entails...

The ATF is still dumb though.
I'm a little confused as to where you're getting this idea that firing with two hands counts as redesigning. They said the stabilizing brace does, but nowhere do they say a second hand does so.

Read the second atf quote. It says what constitutes a redesign in the eyes of the atf. Then read the atf's definition of a pistol.

It clearly states that a pistol is a firearm that is designed to be fired with one hand.

With the precedent set with the verbiage of the atfs declaration about the Sig brace and what constitutes a redesign. The act of shooting a pistol in a way it was not designed for redisgns the pistol.

While no, it doesn't say shooting a handgun two handed is illegal, but the verbiage on what constitutes a redesign is incredibly vague and could be used to declare a right way and a wing way to shoot a pistol.

It's basically the atf sliding hair on how you can shoot your pistol.

The fact that they named an aircraft Warthog...smh

It is the A-10 Thunderbolt II, not the Warthog. It gained the nickname, "Warthog" because of the lineage of Republic. Most of the aircraft that Republic produced was nicknamed, "Hog" in some way.

It's true designation "Thunderbolt II" was to commemorate one of the most effective ground attack aircraft in American history, the P-47 Thunderbolt.

How do we fire the government, again?

Head of the ATF is appointed. Staff is hired.

Isn't that fun? Appointed officials and hired staff making determinations of the law on what is legal and what isn't? Oh, and get this, you illegally manufacture an SBR, SBS, or AOW and you are not guilty of firearms crime, you are guilty of....wait for it....TAX EVASION! YAY!

531
In the ongoing angry letters over taxes and definitions in relation to the SB15 arm brace

The ATF may have actually said that shooting a handgun two handed is Illegal without a tax.

Basically it comes down to what qualifies as a pistol, what qualifies as a short barreled rifle (SBR), and what qualifies as an "Any other weapon (AOW [Shotgun in pistol for])."

An AR-15 with the SB15 arm brace strapped to your arm shooting 1 handed? A-Okay
An AR-15 with the SB15 arm brace against your shoulder like a stock? SBR requiring form 1.
an AOW with the SB15 amr brace against your shoulder like a stock? Short barreled Shotgun (SBS) requiring form 1.
A standard handgun being shot with two hands? Potentially SBR requiring Form 1.

Sounds crazy? Well let me show you what the ATF just said in a new letter about the brace. Letter from the ATF, only two pages.

But what about the whole handgun and two hands thing? Well it comes down to one excerpt from that letter with a definition of "redesign." This definition they come up with is in relation to the arm brace and at what point a rifle with the arm brace stops being a pistol and starts being a rifle.
Quote
Posted By: ATF
The GCA does not define the term “redesign” and therefore ATF applies the common meaning.
“Redesign” is defined as “to alter the appearance or function of.”

the other important bit.
Quote
Posted by:Bureau of dog shootin- I mean Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
The pistol stabilizing brace was neither “designed” nor approved to be used as a shoulder stock,
and therefore use as a shoulder stock constitutes a “redesign” of the device because a possessor
has changed the very function of the item.

Now what does that mean? Well lets take the Miriam Webster's definition of a pistol.
Quote
Posted By:The Dictionary
pis·tol
ˈpistl/Submit
noun
1.
a small firearm designed to be held in one hand.

So Pistols are designed to be shot with one hand? So be the words of the ATF, shooting a pistol with two hands is redesigning the firearm to perform in a function that was not originally intended. But okay, that's the Webster's definition. What about the ATF's definition?

Quote
Posted By:The ATF
Pistol
18 U.S.C., § 921(A)(29) and 27 CFR § 478.11

The term “Pistol” means a weapon originally designed, made, and intended to fire a projectile (bullet) from one or more barrels when held in one hand, and having:

a chamber(s) as an integral part(s) of, or permanently aligned with, the bore(s);

and a short stock designed to be gripped by one hand at an angle to and extending below the line of the bore(s).

I'll be damned, it's the same definition for the most part.

So, the act of shooting a handgun with two hands is actually redesigning it from it's original intended design and thus subject to the National Firearms Act which requires you to have a Form 1 for manufacture of an SBR. Or at least that's what it could mean. There will probably be another letter in a few days clarifying the clarification of a clarification's clarification. That is literally how convoluted this whole thing has become. Letters saying it's okay, then it's not okay, then it's okay, then shooting a handgun out of it's intended design is not okay.

I don't know if the ATF is intentionally fucking with gun owners, if they are truly incompetent, or if they are all clinically retarded. With their actions in the past I lean towards incompetent with a huge dose of clinically retarded, but that's just me.

There you go folks, your tax dollars hard at work over a piece of rubber on the end of an AR-15 pistol.

There I was, Assistant Auto Rifleman in Alpha 2. We had just landed on the Island of Thirsk near the town of Thirsk in the dead of winter. The was heavy cloud cover but the air was still.

Our objective was the town. Russians had a HQ there and we were tasked with destroying it. Simply enough task...

As we made our way toward the objective, snow crunching under our feet, the squads were alive with nervous laughter and jokes. Someone mentioning that the snow sounds like Styrofoam and others chuckling in agreement. Just then over our PRC-343 we get a report from Alpha 1 that they had spotted contact about 300 meters to our front. My team was not in a position to see the contact so we maneuvered into a firing position. But before we can really do anything, the contact passes by and ignores us. In the end, this may have been a good thing. We had a terrible position. My team and Alpha 3 were deep in defilade. Behind us was a ridge and to retreat would mean climbing a hill under enemy fire.

Comamand moved us closer to the beach. Thirsk is a small island and the town has a beach on it's eastern side. This beach was considerably lower in elevation than the town. Maybe 10 meters?  Well as soon as we got close we were spotted and all hell broke loose. PKM and Ak-74 fire was almost incessant. I huddled behind a rock trying my best to call targets for my Auto-rifleman. before I knew it, our Fire team lead was dead. The Auto rifleman took command. That's when the GP-25 gernades started landing. I took a hit from shrapnel. By this time Alpha 1 and 3 were smoking the shit out of the beach giving us some minor concealment. So, I managed to bandage and get the call for a medic out.

This is when it really started turning to shit.

Bravo Squad had been pinned in the forest we were in. They were literally getting ripped apart. Sporadic 7.62x54r bullets from PKMs, almost constant 5.45x39 fire from AK-74s, occasional GP-25 rifle grenades and to our terror, the sound of a 20mm Auto cannon. In time the friendly M-16 and M249 fire slowed and then stopped. Bravo had, while not quite wiped, but decimated beyond combat effectiveness. They moved to link up with us.

Problem was, Bravo brought the hell to us. While we were under fire, they were in a maelstrom of angry slavs. At this time I am hit again and pass out. When I wake up, my team is dead save for the team's Rifleman. There we were, huddled behind a rock under sporadic fire. That's when I heard it. The slow lumbering roar of a tracked vehicle. it was the owner of the autocanon that had fucked up Bravo. Thankfully my Rifleman had an AT4 light anti-tank launcher. He fired and the M136 rocket hit home. The armor, a BMP-3, started cookin off hard. The PKT ammunition belts exploded and the 20mm cannon rounds flew off into all directions. It was like fourth of July. Theeeeen another one rolled up. My Rifleman caught a PKT burst and died.

So there I was, cowered behind a rock, crying, as an angry Russian armored vehicle looked for me. Finally it fucked off looking for other days to ruin. So I scavenged what I could off the rifleman. A bandage and a few extra mags is all I got. Over my squads channel was the call for a general retreat. So I got up and started running back North. Thats when an Angel of mercy came in in the form of an AH-1Z Super Cobra. Halle-fuckin-lujah. It was then promptly ripped apart by 20mm Auto cannon fire.

That's when it felt like something jumped up and bit me in the buttocks. Except this thing crippled me and killed my legs. I had to crawl the rest of the way to the extract. I bandaged and started my journey, passing out two more times before finally passing out on the beach, on a desolate wintery island, with hundreds of Russians crawling all over the place.

ArmA 2, Losing is fun.

I want to read more posts like this, thanks.

Next time I run into a really memorable moment, I'll post it.

Last two major missions I played were kinda lame. One was one I made. Underestimated the distance of engagment on that particular terrain. 500 meters+. No one was having fun.

Before that I was doing some kick ass MOUT only to have a scripted artillery strike that killed me and half the platoon and half the town and half the world and half the universe.

...Well, yeah. A gun that can fire half a dozen bullets in one second is probably more likely to kill somebody than a gun that fires just one bullet per trigger-squeeze.

Debatable.

It's down to cartridge, recoil, weight of the firearm, and shooter ability.

There is a reason why they call it "Full Retard."

Yeah, but at the end of the day the odds of six pieces of burning-hot metal getting fired in rapid succession is more likely to kill someone than just one.

It depends entirely on the firearm, the cartridge, the recoil, and the shooter's ability.

Look at it this way. You have your street choppers. The Infamous Mac-10. It's an open bolt sub machine gun in 9mm Luger. It's incredibly light and short. It has a cyclic rate of 1250 rounds per minute. The bolt is easily the heaviest part of the gun past the magazine. When you pull the trigger the bolt is going to slam forward, hit the primer, fire the round and scream back to continue the cycle. You have the majority of the weight slamming into the back of the gun pulling the muzzle up. You may get one or two rounds off where you aim, but the rest are going to start going wild.

Different autos have different ways to compensate. The AR and AK platform each have a recoil spring in the butt stock to reduce that felt recoil and keep the muzzle on target, but it only does so much. The M1918 Thompson had a commentator that vented gas upward at the muzzle to keep it down and prevent muzzle rise.

Fact of the matter is, it's difficult to keep your muzzle on target when firing full auto. There is literally no practical reason to use it in any situation where you can take an extra half second to line up for a second shot with a semi-auto. Unless of course you are using a firearm with almost to muzzle climb or felt recoil.

And that makes perfect sense, but there's also a kind of logic behind many bullets > one bullet.

Spoiler
At this point I just want to see how long I can keep people responding.

That's fine, I like learning people.

Because at that point, why wast the ammo when you can conserve it taking an extra second and making your shot count?
