The third game actually had the only moment I felt anything like fear in the series, when a certain trick no longer worked on a certain enemy that it used to kill stone dead. The first two games didn't have anything like that.

Dead Space and DS2 weren't particularly scarier than the third game. They were never really that scary to begin with.
I don't know about you but every time a necromorph jumped out at me I screamed like a school girl.
Jump scares are predictable after the first two or three, and there's a difference between surprise and fear (and this is something most modern 'horror' games need to figure out). Especially since you're armed to the teeth and can mow through anything that pops out at you.
