What's interesting here is that when writing down messages, you can only pick from very specific sets of words, none of which including any swears or anything hostile and condescending. There is absolutely no way that anyone called you a faggot or any other insult through an Orange Soapstone Message.

Also, it's a game about being in a dark, dying world void of hope, and where even the NPC's can betray for their own reasons. Having online players 'betray' you by coming in at random and trying to fuck shit up adds to that if you ask me. Although, the NPC invasions are in the game even if you're offline.

Verby, the key thing to the PvP/invasions is that you need to have restored your humanity at a bonfire for them to invade. If you don't, then you don't lose much, you look like a zombie, and you can't summon players/NPCs to help you. That's really it.

Honestly I think you're just making assumptions and being childish about this. Play the game more or even watch some PvP videos. Dark Souls is known for its fun duels. You can summon multiple people and people will wait while you duel the other person or you can just walk around with weapons so people know you're hosting duels. You make money off whoever dies and watch people fight, and I'd even give people prizes for winning duels.

That doesn't sound fun at all.

Really, it's a very community oriented game and it's seriously one of the funnest games I've ever played. You need to give it another chance.

You know, I was wondering when someone was going to accuse me of being the victim of an invasion, or of being gullible enough to give any credence to the hint things.

No, I looked the game up on YouTube before playing and found out about it that way. My first reaction was, "Wow, that's really dumb." Years later, when I finally played the game, I forgot all about that shit until I came across one on the very first room you get to after the tutorial parts. There was a staircase, and a hint thing that read something along the lines of "Go up there, faggot, there's treasure."

And I was like... HMM. THIS IS A LITTLE SUSPICIOUS. DIDN'T I READ ABOUT THIS SOMEWHERE OR SOMETHING? I knew something bad was gonna happen, but I went up the stairs anyway just to humor myself, and lo and behold, a boulder comes careening down, and it knocks me off the staircase, and I land almost in a strategically placed bottomless pit that probably would've killed me had I landed in it.

My reaction was basically, "Yep, worst game ever, 0/10, anyone who likes this is a dumb cunt."

No, I'm less mad that it happened, and more upset that it's a convention of the game at all.
I've never been invaded upon, and I purposely set a trap on myself just to see if people were that evil.

I would never invade another player, and I would never set a misleading hint thing. Ever. I would never, ever do it. And if it's something that the game and the community are going to encourage me to do, expect me to do, how the fuck am I ever gonna have fun playing a game like that.
