The problem is that flaming of the sort Psy describes isn't at all conducive to whatever discussion is going on at that time, and potentially harmful--especially if the topic is serious. It's not really about whether people get mad. oh god i can't do it You have to understand that what you just said was very circular. You say flaming is bad if isn't conducive to the discussion--making threads like this okay, because flaming users is the entire point. Okay, but that misses MY central point, which is... threads like this should be against the rules. There should be no "who is the ugliest user," "who is the stupidest user." I'd love to participate in such threads, but at the end of the day, it just creates drama, tension, and a bad atmosphere. The mods talk about new members being driven away by the negative atmosphere created by the userbase--but they do so little to curtail it. Banning threads like this is not a hugbox mentality. Like I said--that would be acting like forum topics are black and white. Like, you either have to make a thread that promotes insulting users, or complimenting users. That's what Psy was tacitly suggesting. And that's simply not the case. A true hugbox would be if literally every single thread was a circlejerk thread, but that's not what we are. If it's someone, for example, making photoshops to mock another user from a picture they have posted - then of course, that is taken seriously and removed. If you are trying to equate 'X is ugly' with a three page flamewar then you need to get better at picking out balanced examples. My original contention was "I don't care if it's not a flamewar." It's rude and obnoxious to call someone ugly, period. I would never comment on anyone's appearance ever unless they did it to me first.
