From the same guy, we just added ten N64s: Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko Mortal Kombat 4 Jeopardy! The New Tetris Penny Racers Top Gear Overdrive Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey NBA Courtside 2 Featuring Kobe Bryant Bottom of the 9th 178/296 (just over 60%); to get 2/3 of the library, we just need precisely 20 more games The original Turok has been a bug up my ass for a long time, so I'm delighted to finally have it. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil in particular has been in the collection since before we started collecting—it was literally among the first goddamn handful of games we've had—and now we have the entire series. Given that I refuse to play games out of sequential order, this has been a long time coming. The Gex games are kind of annoying in that the only other Gex game for the N64—Enter the Gecko—is actually supposed to be called Gex 2, but because of that dumbass "64" titling gimmick, one might mistake it for the first game in the series. The real first game in the series, simply titled Gex, was originally for the 3DO and never got ported to the 64. As it happens, though, it's a 1995 release, which gives me two reasons to pick it up... but probably for the PlayStation, or something, because fuck the 3DO lmao. Jeopardy! has some increased sentimental value for obvious reasons, and I've always loved the game show anyway, so I was happy to pick this one up at last. To pay respects to my man Trebek, I playtested this game first, and I'm not even joking— four out of the six categories in the first round of my first game were the following: History, World History, American History, and Ancient History. I guess they were still figuring out how to balance these in the '90s. Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey is an unassuming sports game, it happens to be the final piece to the 1996 collection we've been trying to complete. That is to say, we now own all ten of the first games released for the system during its inaugural year in the market (sans Japanese exclusives, of course): Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Killer Instinct Gold, Cruis'n USA, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, International Superstar Soccer 64, and this one. I, for one, think that's pretty cool. In order to complete the 1997 collection, we'll still need about ten more games, but I need to double-check the release dates. Mortal Kombat 4 is the most valuable game in this batch, but nothing too crazy—about $24 loose. Here's an update of that chart I posted before: And just to make it known: Harvest Moon 64 and Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber are both available on the Wii U Virtual Console for $9.99 for as long as the service remains available, which shouldn't be for too much longer now. I imagine it'll probably get shut down very soon, so it's worth considering picking these two games up in particular, because they're kind of rare and expensive to get legitimate cartridges of. The former is worth about $45 loose, and the latter is worth about $75 loose. Obviously, having the real cartridges is way cooler, but saving money on a game you'll otherwise never be able to play legitimately is pretty cool, too.

well, the hunt for a collector's edition preorder begins i guess
i normally NEVER give a fuck about these, but this one seemed too nifty to pass up
if i don't end up getting it, it just means i get to save $45 more bucks
Well, I was able to snag one. Not the most amazing collector's edition, but I think that replica NES cartridge will look nice with my other stuff, and I'm sure the art book is cool. Manuals rock, too. Supposed to arrive January 2nd, but hopefully it comes sooner.

Also, how can you watch cutscenes like this without getting chills? For every dumb Goofy/Donald moment, there's a moment like this. it's a good moment, but that roxas prologue did not need to be 3 hours long or if it did, it didn't need to be so boooooring

You guys suck I love Kingdom Hearts, faults and all
Orgasmic music + fun gameplay is all I ask for. Also the story is epic and left me in tears sometimes
gameplay thus far has mainly been mashing the shit out of the X button, which isn't really my idea of fun

When it comes to the gummi ships, there are definitely some things you just tolerate more or just like more as a child. The appeal isn't the same when I come back to it now, but I think maybe it's because it was also the first game where I could not just fly, but also build a spaceship. So 9-13 year old me thought it was the coolest shit ever. Same thing goes for the light/dark stuff lmao, it was very fake pseudo-deep but it tried to be profound in a way I hadn't been exposed to before.
you ever play r&c? the second game has customizable ships, too, so i feel like if you haven't, you'd probably have a field day with that game, because it has the sickest space battles i've ever seen for a game that isn't entirely focused on them

I liked KH1 and 2 as a child and I thought the whole "light and darkness" stuff was super deep when I was in middle school. Coming back to it as an adult made me realize how dumb I was. Still, fond memories. Used to be obsessed with making gummi ships in KH2 to the point where people at school would give me their memory card so I could build them something. Had this notebook with graph paper where I'd draw blueprints and shit. I think for the time it was pretty good graphics and gameplay-wise, but this is the PS2 era we're talking about. The Final Mixes from what I understand don't do anything to remaster the graphics besides upscaling and changing some colors for some reason.
This is the closest you'll ever see me come to anime, btw.
haven't tried building gummi ships yet—i didn't like the space missions in the first game enough to even bother, but things seem to have improved a lot in 2 and yeah the dark/light stuff is pretty comical when i read this flavor passage late into the first game, i almost shat myself: "Ones born of the heart and darkness, devoid of hearts, ravage all worlds and bring desolation. Seize all hearts and consummate the great heart. All hearts to be one, one heart to encompass all. Realize the destiny: the realm of Kingdom Hearts. The great darkness sealed within the great heart. Progeny of darkness, come back to the eternal darkness. For the heart of light shall unseal the path. Seven hearts, one Keyhole, one key to the door. The door of darkness, tied by two keys. The door to darkness to seal the light. None shall pass but shadows, returning to the darkness. One born of the heart and darkness, hunger for every heart until the dark door opens."

finally playing through kh2
this series is trash and i regret everything
Why you have been playing it still, lol
boredom, and it's not actually that bad tbh, i'm just pretty disappointed after all the great things i've heard a buddy of mine is convinced that once i make it to a certain point in the game, i'll turn around on it, so i'm holding out for that—because he said if i'm still not into it at that point, i don't have to play the rest of the series

Pretty good NES haul: StarTropics Bubble Bobble Lode Runner Mighty Bomb Jack Athena Taboo: The Sixth Sense Werewolf: The Last Warrior Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll Castle of Dragon Pipe Dream Iron Tank: The Invasion of Normandy Ultimate Air Combat F-15 Strike Eagle Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing Bandai Golf: Challenge Pebble Beach Athletic World Super Team Games M.C. Kids Spot: The Video Game Mad Max Jeopardy! Junior Edition Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout Sesame Street: Big Bird's Hide & Speak Fisher-Price: Perfect Fit ...and some weird unlicensed game called Impossible Mission II. The five games at the top of this list were things I've been trying to hunt down for ages—StarTropics and Bubble Bobble because they're good games, and the other three because they're all classic games from 1987, which is old as fuck, and I've always wanted to collect all of the oldest ones from the '80s. We only need 43 more before we can say we own the entire '80s collection (although there's one in particular—Stadium Events—that we'll never get). Taboo: The Sixth Sense is neat because it's not a game, but a tarot card simulator. It's supposed to read your future or something, and I guess there's urban legends about it predicting people's murders, or some shit like that? So that's fun. Iron Tank is interesting in that it's actually a sequel to a game called TNK III, which marked the debut of Ralf Jones, who is one of the Ikari Warriors, who would later go on to star in series like Metal Slug and The King of Fighters. I've always appreciated how basically every SNK game ever is part of a shared universe. I think that's super cool. M.C. Kids and Spot: The Video Game complete the "corporate food industry" trilogy, as it were, since I've had Yo! Noid in the collection for a very long time. I don't believe there's any more of these to get, so I think I have them all now. These games are sponsored by McDonald's, 7-Up, and Domino's respectively, which is pretty funny. Unfortunately, the cartridge for M.C. Kids is pretty fucked up around where the PCB is. The PCB itself appears to be fine, but it's exposed and difficult to insert, so I'm gonna have to figure out how to replace the casing... but unfortunately, it's broken along the label side, so it'll be difficult to find a solution that keeps the label intact. You'd never guess the most valuable game in this batch: it's Athletic World. Similar to World Class Track Meet, this is one of those track & field games that requires you to have a peripheral known as the Power Pad. It's basically a DDR pad that produces controller inputs by stepping on it. There's only a handful of games that require it, and it's certainly an interesting relic of technology, but it's not actually why this particular game is valuable. Really, it's just because of the label. If you have a loose Athletic World cartridge, and it doesn't say the words "Family Fun Fitness" (FFF) on the cover, then the game is only gonna go for about $10. If you do have that label, however, the game shoots up to about $85 loose... and the one we picked up just so happens to have the FFF label, making it the second most valuable NES game in our collection (behind Stack-Up, still valued at about $100 loose). I don't even think the poor guy who sold it to us even realized, but that's the game. Gotta be on top of that shit. Progress: 377/678 (56%)

Their grounds aren’t even valid; there’s nothing illegal about running modded ROMs of Melee to work with Slippi.
not to say that nintendo shouldn't let these things slide, especially during times like these, but i think it's a little disingenuous to argue that people aren't running pirated copies of smash to play it online, or that using unauthorized ROMs in general still isn't in a big legal grey area it's shitty and nintendo sucks, but i don't necessarily agree that their grounds are invalid from a strictly legal standpoint this is the sort of thing that should only be argued from an ethical standpoint imo

NES VC games that are worth picking up when the Wii U/3DS e-shops inevitably close down in the probably near future: might make charts for the other libraries as well, but this was a lot of work for nobody in particular so i might not only metric here is "how hard would it be to pick this game up assuming it never becomes accessible again," assuming you still care about playing games legitimately, so anything that's widely available through stuff like nintendo switch online, or whatever random collections have come out recently, was not factored into this—especially if it's cheap, sucks, or has no novelty so if you miss these games, you've probably lost your chance for a good while if not forever tl;dr get earthbound beginnings
