Serious / Re: Is War Over?
« on: November 08, 2014, 10:30:47 AM »
I don't disagree, but there comes a point when there are simply more people than can be sustained in one given country. I'm sure science and business will find a way to counter the problem, but even then there is a biomass limit for the planet <_<
Technology has a funny way of helping us avert this doomsday scenario.

This idea that humans are becoming overpopulated has been around since Thomas Malthus in 1798, who argued for killing the poor. If there is a limit, we're nowhere near it. You could comfortably fit the entire planet's population in Texas.

Boserup argued Malthus' theory that populations would self-regulate to fit with supply and demand. She said when the population rose above and beyond the supply, technology would be improved/investments in research to make supply higher/more efficient to overcome it.

Of course the idea sounds a bit preposterous as technology can't always save our asses, but we can kinda see it today with GM crops, the first and second Green Revolutions, hydro and aeroponic agriculture, etc..

The only thing we haven't improved dramatically is transport and distribution, though fuel efficient vehicles, renewable energy sources to power vehicles and a mild space-race is picking up the pace in that regard.

Gaming / Re: Halo is pretty great. WARNING: LOT'S OF WORDS AND STUFF.
« on: November 08, 2014, 09:52:20 AM »
I find it odd that everyone hated Halo Reach so much when I thought it was one of the best. Then again, I did start with Halo 3 and ODST, and this was around the time I jumped ship off the CoD Titanic, so Reach was a relatively smooth transference.

I didn't mind the armour permutations, though having them as default on virtually all gamemodes I didn't like, and armour lock got a bit annoying when glitches were probed for it (today, there's still one to throw grenades while in armour lock, but it's not nearly as prevalent as when it was very popular). I liked the new Flood/Zombies gamemode previously from Halo 3, but I hated after 343 took over and added in some retarded gamemode "zombieghosts" and modified certain maps so that they had a shitty sepia filter and blocked certain routes so the games stayed short. Halo 4 completely wrecked that gamemode and it's multiplayer was far more fast paced, something I didn't enjoy as I'd gotten into Halo to leave CoD-style-super-fast-reaction-time shooting behind.

I think a game can be determined "good" when it still has an decent playerbase still on, e.g. CoD4, though that has dwindled slighty in recent years. Halo 3 and Reach IMO reached "good" status given that there's still several thousand players enjoying the game today.

The Flood / Re: BMI Calculator
« on: November 08, 2014, 09:37:39 AM »
22.3

This is just based on adding 5kg onto the last time I weighed myself 2 years ago (65kg +5), and assuming I'm 5'10"/1.77m tall.

The last time I did this it put me in the underweight category, and frankly the BMI thing is a shite indicator of one's health as it doesn't factor in healthy muscle mass for the likes of rugby players.

Serious / Re: Living with someone who is mentally ill
« on: November 07, 2014, 01:20:47 PM »
Dementia and Alzheimers runs strong in my mother's side of the family, but I'm not sure if it's because that side has a tendency to live far longer than average or it's actual gene related stuff (I met my great grandmother and knew her long enough until she died in her late 90's, but my great uncle died at 80 after suffering from Dementia for a good few years and needed his son to take care of him for a long time).

On the outer relations of my father's side we have raging psychopaths (coupled with early heart-disease, but that's another story). I guess I'm somewhat fortunate to say that in my direct family, there isn't someone effected by mental illness (yet, as my mother is convinced she's getting Alzheimers because of bloodlines), but atm I'm living in house with a roommate with clinical depression.

They can be happy and perhaps even manical on some days, but then others they shut-out the world and become generally unsociable. I don't know what to do to help, if I even can help.

I'd say feeling. I won't feel the cold anymore (warm? HA! never heard of it), plus I won't have to feel the pain in thumbs or chilblains in my feet.

That kinda makes sense. Charging them for theft, instead of whatever it was last time.

But...can't they get arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm? Not really sure how it works in the US given that all the states have different laws.

Probs Mao or Stalin. Although I mightn't kill intellectuals, just those that try and turn my great Communist* Nation into capitalist crap. Plus while they might not have ruled the most of the world, they certainly ruled their plot long enough to die of natural causes (at least for Stalin IIRC), and were recent enough to have the fortune to experience technology.

Hell, even Franco in fascist Spain would suit me nicely, that's 40 years of doing whatever I want and very little people caring.

*
Yes, yes, they might not have actually been communist but they're associated with it. Damn, I should really not even need to mention this but you guys are so anal over technicalities sometimes...

Put finger in fire.

Used a window sill to bend a plant of reconstituted wood in half. Wood snapped, headbutted windowsill above my eye.

Played hide and seek at a birthday party, jumped over a high wall into someone else's garden and led everybody's parents on a long chase.

Had a friend over at my house, walked along a stream that ran through my garden to a nearby beach, parents didn't know where we were and didn't come back until 7pm when he was to leave at 5.

Punched a 5 year old in the face at a jungle jim's after he wouldn't leave me alone and when he cried to his parents I hid in the jungle jim for several hours.

Kept putting sugar in tea because it wasn't sweet enough. Forgot to stir, at which point when the top was sweet there was 3/4 of syrup in the cup.

Played a game called "I'm gonna kick your ass" where I chased a friend shouting it the whole time. Never intended to hurt the guy, he was my friend. Didn't look good when we played it outside after parents came to pick up everyone...

Yeah...I was pretty retarded before I was 10.

5231
Well if God did just appear and it was totally legit, I'd probably ask him some questions.

If I find God is still a sadist as he is portrayed in whatever the "only" religious text is (as his existence would probably dispel any outer religions' texts), then I'll stick to not being religious. I can't refute his existence, but he can still be an arse.

5232
Well I was at first surprised that my favourite artist (Beck) was a Scientologist, but as long as his music stays good I really don't care.

5233
Well, would you look at that...

No, because if I do I'll be more suited to an arctic climate than here. Suits my geology course, but not with already a massive blob of hair on my head.

It's not that. It's the fact I came off in a manner I never intended. Not because I was being myself

All you gotta do is clarify if it get's muddled, no need for more.

Ok guys...

What the fuck happened now...

Nothing!

I'm just apologizing for my general behavior

Oh goddamnit.

Apologise for apologisng now. Unless you conduct yourself as an asshole in PM's, you have said nothing  needing an apology here.

If we had to apologise everytime we were ourselves, this place would be heavily regulated and crap. Keep your individual variety up, or you'll be apologising for everything in life when you shouldn't.

Jesus these people shouting "Anarchy" are retarded. Filming it on their South Korean/Japanese phones and cameras, made by a Chinese kid in a sweatshop so they can get buttfucked by multinational companies at the "low, low price" of an arm and a leg, while still fucking over the under developed countries and fueling neo-colonism. Burning away batteries using power from coal, oil and gas fields that with "Anarchy" would just shut off and leave them in the darkness.

While I don't like how the government goes about, wearing a mask and spouting shite isn't going to fix it either. They should go back to burning the straw catholic effigy, shooting fireworks and drinking like everyone else usually does this time of year.
Still interesting to watch.
Oh certainly, but I think some there are for the general celebration, and other for the wrong reasons expecting something to happen.

Just say how it has been your undying passion, since birth, for you to do... media studies at the University of [insert shit Uni here].

But seriously, think of something you've done in your life, and how it can in any way apply to whatever course your doing.

Oh and btw 2/5 offers, one of which  I'm now on...so don't be too worried if it goes tits up after you've sent it off.
Choices??

Geology at:
Manchester (Declined)
Bristol (Declined)
Cardiff (AAB - Accepted and on the course now)
Leicester (AAB, with A in Phys - Had to decline considering I had just dropped Physics...)

And Exploration Geology at Cardiff also. Technically I got an AAB offer here too, but it turns out the first year of this and the Geology course are the same and I could change in the first term to either, so I kinda wasted this slot, and declined it seeing as I had an offer in Geology there.

I could post my Personal Statement, but be warned, I sound like an absolute twat-hammer in it.

Got 3 essays to do, 2 by the end of this month. I'll do 'em later...

Not much else, this day is slow.

That's quite a lot of work, how many pages

Not much, just not used to it yet. Two 500 word essays-in-one, a 1000 word one and another for after Christmas...woooh.

First year of Geology so it's all simplish stuff, it's just using referencing and and writing technique honing...not certain exactly I could write about considering I know very little/nothing about the topics without it being from a source I'd have to reference...

I'm a repository of information, not full of completely independent thought yet (in regards to geology).
