Wow, people are taking Star Wars apart to find stuff from nothing.

Jesus, it's a film series

Bullshit.

We don't have the neurological knowledge right now for this to work. It's just outrageous.

They aren't exactly fucking around with the brain itself, more like the connecting all the wires from the head to the right sockets in the body/neck. And we've already done tests on mice, dogs and monkeys that was apparently worthy of some scientific info.
It's really not as simple as just "connecting all the wires".
True, but it appears to be easier than taking just the brain out a head and shoving it into another.

It kinda bugs me that everyone here has Skype and Cheats the only one that's I have on my 5 person contact list.

Join the official Sep7 skype chatroom and chat with the rest of us crazy lot.
An invite to it would be nice.

An invite isn't strictly possible; it's already been sent.

1: Wales, land of sheep, hills and ONE mountain, and people who have an almost lyrical voice. well, the ones who aren't from Cardiff, anyway...

2: Coffee that came from a moka pot, and Anatolia pizza from my local takeaway (Olives, Beef, Spicy Chicken, Sweetcorn and Onions)

3: Generally average-ish proportions, with a slouching stature, with a default serious/sad look on my face (not much I can do about that, normally I'm cheerful) and complexion of mild grey paper. I do pretty much resemble Roy from the IT Crowd.

4: First a geology degree, than after that... haven't really dwelled on it. It'll come eventually, and if not I'll rush into doing something anyway like I normally do.

We have Skype and a couple of Plug.dj rooms, at this rate the Sep7agon will be more of a loose confederation of chatrooms than an internet forum by the end of the year.

I was thinking more of an event type thing, we need to find some new interactive shit to do.

We could do that online cards against humanity thing
oh boy
It would be pretty fun, given our communities... "fucked-uppiness"

there's already a thread for this though...

True, but I cba to go back to that one as I've changed the title of it so many times I've forgotten where to find it.

That's pretty cool especially with the cameras so they don't get shot, though it's more an armored car or an IFV than a tank.

If that thing came up against an RPG or an actual tank, that thing is fucked. Hell, boggy ground would probably scuttle it too.

Hahaha, fuck this national celebration.

Got a younger brother who's got a mean temper, though sort of like a yappy dog.

Hmm.

Body is more area to look at and appreciate, but face is what I'd be looking at more often.

Face it is. Couldn't tell if a great body is actually great with clothes on. :P

Meh. Date first, and if it goes any further ask about it. I'm sure if it got further either she'd limit it or stop, or you could get over it.

Complaining on a first date gets you fuck all.

The Flood / Re: Feminism, its not a synonym for equality
« on: April 10, 2015, 06:11:23 PM »
I've always found it funny when feminists say they are pushing for "equality". Not LOL funny, but just a niggling thought in my mind.

There probably is a lot more issues facing women than men still, but please don't tell me feminism is about gender equality when the title itself of such "equality" gender biased. Egalitarianism is what they are looking for (or along the lines of). Feminism has never looked out for the negative inequalities of man.

Serious / Re: Should you be able to use self defense against a Cop?
« on: April 10, 2015, 03:29:03 PM »
Problem is, if you are facing a cop who has/is: i) Misunderstood your action and knows from his mind you did a criminal act or ii) Is just a shitty cop, what stops them from then beating the shit out of you, shooting/tasing you and then charging you with assault of a police officer afterwards regardless of your original innocence?

Plus police have training to deal with this sorta thing. If I was being detained and about to face police brutality I'd take my chances running than fighting them.

I don't believe this at all.

I find it very doubtful, but not entirely impossible juuuust yet. We've already had successful limb, face and recently womb transplants capable of allowing sterile women to give birth to children, and there's also massive advancements for disabled people to see or hear for the first time, as well as walk from after what was previously thought to be permanently damaging spinal injuries.

Granted, I find it hard to believe they will actually succeed (there's so many things that can go wrong with this, as well as unforeseen circumstances ahead), but I find that we've gotten to a stage we can even consider such a feat possible is just amazing.

The Flood / Re: At what age are you too old to live with your parents
« on: April 10, 2015, 01:58:19 PM »
I'd say you might need a kick up the arse by the time you're 30. You may work in the same area as where you're parents live, so it would make more sense to live a tad cheaper with the family and pay some sort of "rent" until you get a job somewhere else or have enough money to live on your own.

Serious / First *full body transplant* to occur in 2017
« on: April 10, 2015, 01:55:05 PM »
Popped up on Reddit recently, and this sciency article explains how they are going to transplant a 30 year--old paraplegic's head onto a brain dead body, around 2017, as someone recently volunteered for it (a not-so sciency article).

Main points below:
Quote
The idea was first proposed in 2013 by Sergio Canavero of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group in Italy. He wants to use the surgery to extend the lives of people whose muscles and nerves have degenerated or whose organs are riddled with cancer. Now he claims the major hurdles, such as fusing the spinal cord and preventing the body's immune system from rejecting the head, are surmountable, and the surgery could be ready as early as 2017.

This month (February), he published a summary of the technique he believes will allow doctors to transplant a head onto a new body, involving cooling the recipient's head and the donor body to extend the time their cells can survive without oxygen. The tissue around the neck is dissected and the major blood vessels are linked using tiny tubes, before the spinal cords of each person are cut. Cleanly severing the cords is key, says Canavero.

The recipient's head is then moved onto the donor body and the two ends of the spinal cord – which resemble two densely packed bundles of spaghetti – are fused together. To achieve this, Canavero intends to flush the area with a chemical called polyethylene glycol, and follow up with several hours of injections of the same stuff. Just like hot water makes dry spaghetti stick together, polyethylene glycol encourages the fat in cell membranes to mesh. Next, the muscles and blood supply would be sutured and the recipient kept in a coma for three or four weeks to prevent movement. Implanted electrodes would provide regular electrical stimulation to the spinal cord, because research suggests this can strengthen new nerve connections.

When the recipient wakes up, Canavero predicts they would be able to move and feel their face and would speak with the same voice. He says that physiotherapy would enable the person to walk within a year.

The trickiest part will be getting the spinal cords to fuse. Polyethylene glycol has been shown to prompt the growth of spinal cord nerves in animals, and Canavero intends to use brain-dead organ donors to test the technique. However, others are sceptical that this would be enough. "There is no evidence that the connectivity of cord and brain would lead to useful sentient or motor function following head transplantation," says Richard Borgens, director of the Center for Paralysis Research at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

TLDR: FULL FUCKING BODY TRANSPLANT, AS IN CUTTING OFF A HEAD AND SHOVING IT ONTO ANOTHER BODY, SOONISH

So, we are heading into a Sci-Fi dystopian novel with this barely being considered possible with today's medical technology and techniques. What do you think?

This lacks so much depth and personal input that I could've written it for you.
Really nothing good happens until I get to America. Nothing in Australia is really worth going in depth with.

Then beef up part I with part II and merge it. It's not worth separating it like this unless you're boosting your thread/post count for some pointless reason.

Statistics for Serious board.

If the current growth rate of -7% were maintained until the end of the year, the amount of posts made in Serious would be 102 posts.

Damn, Meta & Turkey need to up their game.

4139
Woah, how did activity almost half between January and March?

That said, this only counts threads. Optimism hopes that maybe the post per thread was still consistent, or higher.
