The Flood / Re: What is the worst injury you've seen IRL« on: January 23, 2016, 09:22:36 PM »Gahfuckit I can't stand blood It was his own fault, really. Instead of holding his nose below the bridge, he just flailed around shouting at me that he was bleeding, like I'm supposed to do it for him or something. He hates blood too, but for someone who hates it that much I couldn't understand how he hadn't figured out how to stop them by then. 2163

One time at school, this dude was screaming while he was running holding his hand. He'd been playing Bulldogs and some guy tackled him pretty badly, which had bent his hand back onto his arm, the wrong way around. It didn't stay like that once he got up and sprinted to the school office, but for that split-second that it was bent that way, it makes me cringe to think about it.
For one that was a bit bloodier, my brother gets random, really bad nosebleeds. We were staying in London and I woke up to him shouting "I'm bleeding, I'M FUCKIN' BLEEDEN!", and because of the state of panic he set himself, there was blood everywhere, mostly around his face and arms because he kept wiping it off with his hands (looked a bit like a cannibal). He ran to bathroom to get tissue, coughed up this ungodly phlegm-blob of blood that resembled an afterbirth, and passed out. He was always one to be a dramatic. 2164

I don't know what I would do in such a situation.
I'd at least try the friendlier, less these-little-piggies-went-to-slaughter method first. 2165

Oh btw, to save time fidgeting with mics and what-not:
-Right click the sound button on the windows desktop, select "recording devices" -Make your mic (whatever it is, inbuilt or your own) the default device It stops the sound from the game playing over on the mic. 2166

Well it doesn't say he has to tell them that. I mean he can find out names and addresses pretty easily, as can date of birth. One night stands with this order in place are totally out, however. That completely takes the piss, having an order placed without conviction. I thought that's how the justice system isn't supposed to work. 2168

Funny story actually, there's a ton of signless posts around my town, and someone's been going around and putting signs on them complaining about the lack of signs. Very British, just like the time someone put birthday balloons around a work's traffic light a year after it was only supposed to be there "temporarily" while they fixed the road.

Interstellar, Alien (although Resurrection is the runt of the series), BladeRunner. Dredd for notable mention.
The 80's had a chock-full of good ones, only recently are movies going back to it. I guess that by the end they were being done to death just like Zombies now. 2178

Great, just when we thought we've probed the last object in our solar system, another one has to go and get discovered...
But this is welcome news, more things to be interested in in the local area. If it's Neptune sized however, would it have to be a gas planet (or at that distance away from the Sun, a frozen one)? 2180
The Flood / Re: Practicing advanced English« on: January 21, 2016, 02:43:50 PM »
You speak English good.
Honestly the best thing I can suggest is listen to some UK radio with large vocabulary, shit like BBC Radio 4. Don't have to be interested or even listen too intently, it just helps. Used to do this and listen to RTE Raidió na Gaeltachta when I learned Gaelic when I was young, used to be good at it. Also, read some Journals. That'll deal with spelling and the crazy amount of posh vocabulary they use that would be used in academic settings. 2181

The Flood / Re: Why Are Gamer Girls So Desirable?« on: January 20, 2016, 01:01:35 PM »
Sharing similar interest and probably the same road that brought them to gaming. Only the opposite sex. Some see it as their only chance to show off their skills where a good life or other, more active interests aren't necessary to get a girl.
TLDR Some people are desperate. 2185

All less armour would do is make you more mobile, not give you better damage protection.Yeah there is a mod which removes the breastplates because, ya know, those things will easily kill you. I never understood there need to throw breast plates on all the armor to say "hey it's a girl!" since breastplates are insanely dangerous on armor and practically asking someone to collapse your chest. But most characters fuck with her not exactly being a "proper lady". Ah, medieval times. 2186

Well, the income tax is something like 50% there if you fall into the high bracket of wages. Suppose if everyone has lots of degrees you can get a better job and get better pay and pay more taxes, in theory... Loans, grants, scholarships, tax credits, military options. How do the loans work? Are they just normal loans or are they somewhat student friendly? i.e. Here the loans aren't repayable until you hit a certain pay threshold (I think it's around £21,000 a year, £8,000 more than minimum wage), but £21,000 is a pretty low number and if you're earning below that, Uni was a waste of time and now you're in debt. For 30 years. 2189
Serious / Re: Maintenance Grants for English Students scrapped« on: January 19, 2016, 07:03:52 PM »
For myself, as I count as a Welsh Citizen (living in Wales for 9 years) so fortunately I have 2/3 subsidised by the Welsh Government, which get it's funding from...England. I will owe £9,000 for the degree, and an extra ~£12,000 through loans to support myself in that time. Totalling £21,000 give-or-take I've got relatively lightly.
How it works in Britain is completely ridiculous. Wales and Scotland partially or fully fund their tertiary education programs with the money originally sourced from England by and large (although technically, Wales puts more into the coffers than it gets out, but I digress). Meanwhile, my parents went through different systems with my Dad getting education free in the UK under an EU subsidy because at the time, being Irish classed you as an EU international student (sorta like the Erasmus programs, but don't cost £12k). There isn't even talk about loans to support yourself throughout their study, most could receive bursaries. I reckon it's something to do with the fact that under the new system, only 45% of the loans given out is expected to be paid back (compared to the previous system where it was around 50%, and further back it was just free). Why not scrap the free money they give out to the lower incomes so they can reclaim a "larger 45%" in loans? Granted, I think how the system currently doles out money needs some adjustment, but scrapping them altogether is going to royally fuck up those who already have an uphill struggle. Meanwhile in Finland, people were protesting that non-EU students would have to pay fees for their degree there (the story is old but the best I could find about it - there have been more protests since). Hell, my Finnish roommate was talking about how there were protests about the government scrapping free second degrees after you completed your first one. Spoiler Okay, just about grumped out now. 2190

(At least, there's no mention for Wales. Scotland is devolved enough to be unaffected by this vote)
The Independent This also applies to English students studying in the next acedemic year rather than just new students, and English Students in Wales (and I assume Scotland), despite the fact that Welsh MP's couldn't vote on the matter because of some "English votes for English things" legislation: Cardiff SU's stance on the matter. So Brits, specifically English, how much debt personally have you got/will have for going to University? Record to beat is £52,000 from my roommate studying History here. Appreciated also would be how US students handle the costs of their tuition at home, as IIRC you don't have a student finance system to soften the blow. |
