I've lost grandparents on either side, but before birth so they've never affected me other than curiosity as to what they were like. My only great grandmother I knew died when I was around 8 or 9 so again, not much to feel in terms of loss.
I'd say I've been fortunate, but at the same time that's going to make it harder longer down the line when I lose my two remaining grandparents as I grew up with both of them closely, and I'm close to my other extended family too, who are starting to get on.
I've lost acquaintances and family pets and felt similar, a bit numb, but never actually hitting badly. I think about them a lot, especially since most the people I knew went out pretty grisly or depressed. People take grief in different ways and there's no "right way" to experience it. For how long boils down to how long it'll take until you get "used" to it - someone you see everyday and knew well and had good vibes off of might take a lot longer than someone you met once at a bar.
This probably hasn't helped very much. I'm sorry for your loss.

The Gears' 1-3 ones always stick with me. Even the 4th one I hadn't seen and that looks alright anyway. The Borderlands' original trailer was pretty lackluster - 3 years later they sold it's sequel with a lot more of it's strengths; Destroy All Humans had a few, but this is the one that sold me it as a kid; Halo has some damn good live action trailers. The Halo 3 ones should be up here too, but this was the first one I saw on TV; Deus Ex doesn't show much gameplay though it does have a very good way of displaying the features through the trailers,and even a large part of the story without ultimately spoiling anything. The monologue reads out a bit like a techno version of Hatred though; And further onto the topic of dystopian alternative futures (...right?), there's Fallout 3 with a general "everything's fucked" tone; to NV's "Well, everything's not all bad, we have casinos..." to 4's "Yep, still fucked" Then we have the Commie's Russian take on the upcoming apocalypse; less 50's idealistic superficial coating over a dystopia, just straight up hellish with a hint of slightly different make-believe; So yeah, that last one is out next year and it's been the only new game series I've pre-ordered, and the only one I'm ordering for next year methinks.

Does this only apply to Europe so far or does it affect everyone on the internet regardless of where they are from?
I doubt it'll affect your content dramatically even if it were passed, but there's the Brussels Effect; When every other country has to adhere to EU laws to reach and market to that audience, rather than having two separate laws regarding the matter (EU and US, or Asia), most companies just swap all of their policies over to that one because it's a lot easier following one set of laws than two. For example, you might've gotten some emails about changing their privacy policy in regards to GDPR, which is only technically in force in the EU, American news outlets practice it too because otherwise they lose their audience (and profits) in Europe.

There's a program called HTTTrack that can download websites and have them displayed on your computer in a browsable format.
I could download the entire Flood section, but I have a feeling it will bloat my computer, and don't know a way to have it hosted on the internet and still accessible.
Is it really that important though at this point? It's been 5 years. The shit I wrote then isn't an accurate rep. of me anymore, nor I guess for many of you short of the few screenshots we've got for keepsies.

Last Light is fucking fantastic. I can't recommend it enough, if you haven't seen this already. 2033 is a bit clunkier on the gameplay but it's a lovely dark story to play through. I would play the Redux version of the games as 2033 was updated to LL's levels of details and both have the latest support from 4A on XBone/PS4/PC (as well as all the minor DLC material that LL had for Preorders), but I've already bought them for my Xbox...then the original PC versions...and the books... LL can be played straight away as it fills you in with some of the background (2033), but do try and get it, it's probably worth pennies now. Both games reward exploration, and the story is linear so you don't have to worry about getting too deviated from the missions. I can't say for 2033's stealth mechanics, but it is possible in LL to kill almost no humans except in the "boss" battles - and even then you have a final choice for most. Ranger Hardcore mode removes the HUD and is recommended that you use that as a re-playthrough, and over a few days, as otherwise you'll come back to a save weeks/months later and forget what the controls are like I did.

Unless a civilisation is out there building telescopes the size of galaxies, it's unlikely anyone far enough away like the timeframe you're describing is looking at us.
Or in other words, we can see andromeda as it was 2m years ago, but we can barely make out individual stars as anything more than a blur.
Right so, I wasn't really sure how far we can actually see with telescopes but hearing about exoplanets x Lightyears away had me thinking about it. We're (and virtually anyone else even close to our level of tech) is essentially blind to anything specific outside our area. That's put a bit of a dampener on things even more that I think about it. We're blind now, and even at best cases we'd be out of date anyway. Ah well.

Alien contact would likely be using radio telescopes to detect high IR emissions around an extrasolar planet or star, or even the tell tale signs of a braking burn being conducted by a generation vessel. As a result, we'd have decades to communicate and/ or prepare any kind of defense if necessary.
I've always wondered about this. Because of the distances and the "limitation" being the speed of light, there's gonna be always a massive time lag behind what we're seeing and what's actually there now over there. E.g. Life started on Earth approx. 4Ga. Anything looking at Earth from that distance is just gonna see a rocky mass, with specrtral graphs(?) showing a primitive atmosphere. At this point, Mars or Venus would look like better candidates for intelligent life than Earth would. Say if life takes 4.1-2Ga to get to a Type III civ where their influences are observable from the galaxy, with +/- 1Ga to account for an early turbulent and chaotic Universe, we can only look as far back as 8-10Ga back to observe something, which would already be out of date the second we see it. The odds of life starting out anywhere elsewhere I think is pretty high, and the c constant I think explains the Fermi paradox, but then at the same time it works against us finding any during Earth's life's existence for the same reason (short of breaking the laws of physics). Am I making sense? Any life that gets far enough to look outside its planet is only going to see things that appear dead or primordial, but at the same time another life is seeing the same thing in their scopes. That kinda sucks.

Metro 2033/LL had you wearing a gas mask whenever you went to the radioactive surface - otherwise you'd die of suffocation ("bad air" or something, just go with it) Apart from hearing your breathing that really added tension to the gameplay (and changed dynamically e.g. it would be more calm as you were walking around, more laboured as you were sprinting, more rushed, sporadic, and harsh during shootouts and animal attacks), you'd have to find these sparse air filters for the gas mask that only lasted a few minutes a piece, and slowly over time your mask would condensate up as your filters got dirty. If you were unfortunate to run out, your guy would do a quick *Huuuuuuuuueeeeeehp* to take a last deep breath, take your now-useless mask off, and gave you about 30 seconds to frantically scrabble around to find a fresh air filter off a corpse or in some storage cabinet if you were lucky. (First 40 secs of this vid) If air filters weren't enough to worry about, your mask could get damaged if you were attacked, first the glass would crack, your mask would hiss at every breath and deplete your filters faster, and if damaged enough if would just break and you've have to find a new one off a dead guy, or kill your assailant and take his (whose would also be at risk of damage or broken if you'd aimed for the head - you could even kill people through the suffocation mechanic by just breaking their masks). In Last Light they developed it further for immersive purposes - if you'd walked into a mucky deep puddle, radioactive swamp bog, had been using the mask for a while for it to condensate, or just been killing a lot of things and got a bit splashed, you could wipe it off with your hands by pressing a button (9 minute mark) (it would do it automatically, but after a much longer time period, which in a battle or hazardous area could be enough to kill you). You could also just wipe it whenever you wanted, say if you're a bit OCD on how condensated your mask gets, or you just like seeing more clearly through a restricted view of a gasmask. It really added to the game, including it's "Hardcore Ranger" difficulty mode which took away the UI as well as making the damage realistically high both ways - one time I'd skipped searching through a surface level for filters, and at the final part of the mission when you get chased and attacked by Norsalises (giant rat-dog things) with Pavel (your comradely comrade!), my filters ran out mid-chase, so once we got to the metro door to have a last stand with the rat dogs until they opened the door, I nearly suffocated myself (your vision starts pulsing with blurriness, a dark vignette surrounds your vision which slowly closes in, your hearing starts to dull, and your breathing once you lose your breath is panicked and frantic until you eventually collapse and pass out/die). Fighting off an endless wave of Norsalises, counting the rounds you have left loaded on your makeshift auto-revolving-shotgun, whilst simultaneously running out of air JUST as the cutscene for the people inside to open the door and pull you into the oxygen-safe metro and finish the level made it memorable and gave it a bit of an adrenaline rush.

It's more likely that it happened several times, but only one was around long enough and evolved beyond single celled organisms/amino acid chains and just beat the rest. Geological record's a bit shit for hard evidence, and our only evidence supporting that it happened once is us... so it's not solid either way. Iirc some tests showed that simple amino acids could be built in some primordial sea and the addition of lightning or asteroid inpacts to generate the heat to get them to combine into other things was theoretically possible (both of which were as common back then as today, if not more). And this was before Geologists did deep-sea surveys and discovered little "islands" of life around undersea thermal vents. Don't get me wrong here it was a fucking stroke of luck with an astronomical amount of decimal places for the statistical likelihood of life on Earth starting and then getting this far, but it's not 0.

Probably pretty bad first reaction. There's no telling what their form of communication would be like, and if they arrived here by any means at all, that would put them at leagues ahead of us in intelligence and technology, considering getting anywhere outside of the local systems takes us aaaaages. We'd quickly become something to investigate and study, if we aren't edible or immediately violent towards them.
If it's something akin to discovering Bacteria or single celled organisms on the moons of Titan or Io (?), or fossilised shit on Mars there'd be some hype/buzzfeed articles in the public, massive debates in the science and religious communities, and not much else.
