And why don't we ensure that people seeking a firearm be taught those responsible ownership practices?

Make ammunition purchases very strict. Like you cannot get more than 15 rounds per year? Would you really need more for self defence?
Only if you plan on actually hitting anything. Firing a gun isn't as easy as it is in videogames, it takes practice.
I mean, is it self defence if your target is over 50m away? Unless they are also playing the self-defence card cuz you had a gun out.
I'd be surprised if an inexperienced gun owner in a tense situation could land shots inside ten yards, especially when being charged. If you've never handled a firearm it's not going to do you any favors.
So no need for guns for normal citizens?
No guns for anyone, especially if they aren't allowed to practice handling them.

Single provider two parent households, where one parent works and the other stays home with the kids.
As for Dietrich's objections, every atomic family was like this, and plenty of famines still are.
There was a time that if both parents worked it was seen as odd, and people worried that the kids wouldn't be raised right.

That's a little pedantic, but alright. The government should be rewarding couples for perpetuating family values, and marriage is a good way to demonstrate that your partner is significant enough to be considered family.
Parents pass on their values to their children if they're convincing enough, so yeah, couples have everything to do with it.
