It has been my experience that if you work hard you don't get promoted. If you think about it from their perspective, they would be filling a pretty standard role with one of their top performing associates.
They don't want to change you to a new role when you're excelling at your other.
They can only do that to a person for some time, so long as they have the will to rise up the ranks and aren't much of a push over. Eventually they'll start to confront their superiors about it and if nothing changes then they'll seek out a better position in another company. That kind of management tactic very well may cost a business their most reliable workers.
It's a terrible practice tbh, but one that continues to permeate the American job market. It's up to the individual whether to stay stagnant or move on. I got so many raises from my first job that I was making more than most supervisors, and that's only because I recognized I was a benefit and demanded a better wage. Most people don't unfortunately.

That's actually how I got this job. My supervisor brought up video games, and I told him that I was a moderator on here without mentioning the site.
How did it go?
I didn't get the promotion. They told me I was the top performer of the year and that I knew the information better than them... So I don't really understand why I didn't get it. Oh well.
