« on: July 30, 2014, 02:19:53 PM »
I play ROMs of them on my phone. I haven't played pokemon on an actual Nintendo product in a while.
I play them on my iPad and it's amazing. 8)

You should permanently disable the notification system if someone can use it to spam and get the website taken down.
It is. The one that is still here (those popups that fade away) has nothing to do with the emails and cannot be exploited in order to crash the site.

I didn't expect this to be submitted and was gonna polish it up alittle before trying again. Oh well
I'll delete it for you if you'd like.
No need. I'll just edit it in since the stuff I wanted to change is at very end.
K. :)

Do mods still get emails for reported posts or no?
That should be disabled as well. It's a bummer, I know, but it would be a vulnerability if some asshat decided to try to sink the forum.

You will still get the link at the top (or should). If this is causing issues I'll investigate a fix.

EDIT: Yeah, that's still working. We should be fine.

I'm still getting notifications when I turned them off in the settings.
Emails?
No, the side notifications that pop up then go away >.>
Oh, good. That's a fucking relief, to be honest (and they cannot be disabled by users yet).

Those are perfectly OK. They were never what made the site poop itself.
Ohhh, I thought it was the side notifications that were going away 3
We all good den!
No. They sent me the messages that were doing it. It was about a bajillion "Blablah has posted in this thread..." emails.

Even with the problems this place runs better than bnet.
And you are not forced to burn your retinas.
I was 'for-real' getting a headache from surfing Bnet so often yesterday when the site was down.
Should have gone to the shelter forum.
I just sent him the link today. lol >.<

We have a shelter forum?
Yes. I'm not sure if it's cool to post it publicly, though.

Hard refresh and clear your cache.
What?
Hold control down and hit F5 on the pages you're seeing the nonsense. If that doesn't work let me know.

Clicking on certain threads still brings you to the cow page.
Hard refresh and clear your cache. I have a feeling I should add this to the update thread.

It could be a good idea in order to quarantine the political and religious flame wars but it might need more moderation than the other forums.
That's one of my concerns. It would need to have stricter posting policies than The Flood, since it's so easy to incite a riot in those kinds of threads.
Why does it matter if there's flaming in that section, though? If it were to be made, the reason would be to separate the flamers from the rest of the community, and anyone going into that forum should know what they're getting into. Bothering with extra moderation wouldn't make much sense. Just allow it to be a cesspool for the sake of the other forums.
Not gonna happen. If (and probably when) the forum is made, it'll be heavily moderated. Heated discussions will be expected and allowed, but namecalling and insult flinging will earn you 1, 3, or 7 day bans without warning.

I can't get on to the Flood.
But thanks for the quick work Cheat :)
Can you screenshot the issue for me?
It goes to the Fat Cow site problem but I'll try to get a pic.

Here's what happened (for anyone who cares):

We are a larger community than most forums (excluding the commercial forums like this one; of course they're enormous; that's not my point). The notifications option that was toggled spat out "Your thread was commented in by..." posts like nobody's business continuously, day in day out, and the host tagged it as spam, locked the account, and logged it in a support ticket.

Of course it wasn't spam, but they didn't know that. I resolved the issue and I am currently waiting for it to be turned back on. When it is, the site will be in maintenance mode while I disable email notifications and daily email reports and the like.
In response to this, I have sabotaged most of the email functionality of the site. You shouldn't get new notifications and you certainty shouldn't be able to subscribe to anything else. If you can, please, please go to your profile >> Modify Profile >> Notifications and uncheck everything. The on-site notifications that pop up will still work even with these disabled, so you won't be stuck with nothing.

Getting the fatcow page on certain items?
Clear your cache and do a hard refresh. It's all good server side.

I'll have an explanation up in a little bit, but I need you do do a few things for me.

Go into your profile and select Modify Profile >> Notifications. Unnotify yourselves of anything in there. Anything.

I believe I have sufficiently sabotaged the file that sends emails out for notifications, but it's always good to be thorough. You should also be unable to notify yourself of any more topics. Let me know if that's not the case, please.

And PLEASE let me know if you get any more emails AT ALL from this forum.

Thanks.

UPDATE: I've gone through the memberlist and removed all notifications from all members. This shouldn't happen again.

My uncle and my dad always tell people the person the caller is looking for is "in the hot tub with Jane" and that they need to call back later. When they do, the person is still "in the hot tub."

I've just had mods on other boards want to eliminate certain members due to personal bias. Maybe their own bias alone or the bias of a group of specific members. In the end it always created a large amount of drama between those that didn't agree with the decision and those that did. And there was no definite rule in the CoC to look at and say, "Well here's the rule/rules that were broken. This discussion can end here, now."
Exactly. It has to be on the moderator's volition whether the person is crossing the "imaginary line", and if they're showing personal bias through their actions then they shouldn't be mods.

I fully support a CoC constructed at least partially by the community. All I'm saying is that the moderators should be the ones fully in charge of enforcing it. When you put an iffy situation to the public vote, I just find it hard to see the entire board looking at the situation objectively and voting. I'd see it becoming a popularity contest every time.
I'm going to unlock the rules thread so everyone can post potential suggestions/revisions.
