Septagon / Re: quick question regarding the rules.
« on: October 10, 2014, 08:12:50 PM »
Yeah, hopefully we'll have our good 'ol swear words back once the ad nonsense is sorted out.

from what i read it started with some...questionable ads and words being said?
No, adsense (which is/was our main ad provider) basically gave the forum a warning because they didn't like the way we talked around here, and threatened to cut off service. They don't like servicing websites that post cursing and sexual content.

i had 2 responses to this post.
1.dont they service youtube as well? because im sure the whole comments section on a religious video would be enough...
2.wait that happens? i thought those ads were just there no matter what...didint know an ad company cared about the content on the site...would it be acceptable to say "*says number eleven*" in place of a swear word? if you get that reference...
Adsense is run by Google I'm pretty sure, and Google is dumd

wait so then why are they...but...*mind shatters* i dont even know anymore...but at least i know about the whole swearing thing now...

now to come up with clever censor alternatives...cant use blam...*dolphin noise* ill never come up with-*gasp* never mind...nailed it.
Let me help.

You won't get banned for swearing. If the filter takes care of it, so be it, but the stuff not covered isn't going to get you in trouble.

If you're not creating a new topic (IE: you're replying or quoting) bypassing the filter isn't a big deal, as guests can't view replies to posts (including adsense bots).

Basically we don't let you go around harassing and attacking people anymore.
Apparently saying mean, non PC words is harassment now

Are you talking about the word filter? That's temporary I believe since we're searching for an ad agency that won't give a shit if we say bad words.

I'm guessing adult film ad agencies would be perfect for that.

I think I actually suggested something similar back when we first got a warning from adsense, but I'm taking the non-response as a no from Cheat.
I forgot. :-\

And this Adversal thing might be our savior, but I'll just have to see. If not...maybe those adult ads would work. It would certainly free us up to say whatever we wanted.

Not so much. Calling someone mean, non-PC words is just mute-worthy now.

On the Nsider forums I was moderately well known for setting up threads for Pokemon Action Replay/Gameshark codes. One of the names that kind of stuck with me was "that cheat guy", since apparently my original handle was harder to remember.

At the time I was a fan of dragons and named my Pokemon character Lance, after the boss at the end of one of the games.

Cheat + Lance + r (since Cheatlance is strange). I still like to go by Cheat whenever I can, though.

« on: October 10, 2014, 11:43:06 AM »
This one is not necessarily an improvement, but I sort of wanted to play with branding ideas for Sep7agon to match with the design I have on my head, the current logo wouldn't match. (The edges look a little rough because I carelessly scaled it down from its original size, without cleaning it) The purpose is to listen to feedback though. Do you like the "O" being twisted like this? Do you feel the font matches more the polygon effect?

Spoiler
I'm not really liking the logo. It's very...jagged.

I am a fan of giving more room in between the outer septagon and the inner one of the logo, though. Also, what don't are you using?

Mod forums are a pretty common practice. I don't see the problem.
We're not your typical mod forum though. We are not a company or organization where mods are an "external" power. We were all part of the same thing, all equal and with just as many (or little) rights as everyone else. Changing that up by giving a handful of people powers and dealing with business behind closed doors can be pretty detrimental to a small community like ours. It creates a divide.between people.

People are writing this off as assholes just looking for an excuse to continue being assholes, but there's genuine complaints to be made here. We used to all be the same, just regular members of Bnet looking for a place that wouldn't get screwed over by Bungie. There was a time where we were all equal, knew just as much as the next guy and had the same voice in affairs as anyone. Now, that balance is gone. But it is not necessarily that which is the problem. Moderation is a necessary evil. There need to be a few mature people that can be trusted to keep an eye on things. But all this secrecy? Hell no.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: transparency is key. Not this "sorry, this is top secret mod and drama bsns that goes way over your head, better be quiet" bullshit that has been going on lately.
I think you may be looking too much into our mod forum. It's less of a secret meeting room and more of a bulletin board for letting everyone on staff know who is causing problems, what to look out for, and who would make good staff in the future.

We do have some stuff that needs to stay hush hush, like discussions on individual members, but it's nowhere near as shady as you're making it out to be.

I'm turning the ads back on since I think I've fixed the problem with bad advertisements sneaking through.

Let me know if that's not the case and we'll kick Adversal to the curb.

Man I thought that the Drama with Anarchy was bad. What the hell happened while I had the flu.
This is the aftermath of this last Anarchy.
Really? I thought the issue was just with some moderators and people making some bad moves in terms of posts. This right here just looks like a rule change that irritated some users and some got really irritated.
It's more like the very slight aftershock of Anarchy. People were dicks and the Ninja team agreed that some of our rules needed to be revised and updated.

A few people were...unhappy...with the rules and certain members of the mod team.

You can make your own custom one but you can't use a custom nameplate until you have heroic status and 3000 posts.

« on: October 09, 2014, 07:27:48 PM »
It's because I'm using the imposter nameplate. Something to do with the colored name on the list is tied into what nameplate that person is using.
Ahh.

That doesn't make sense to me. But whatever, if it's not a bug, it's not a bug.
It's something that I'd like to get fixed, but other things always come up. Not technically a bug, but it's an annoyance.

Temper, temper.

Clearly reports do nothing anymore when the mods are biased as all hell.
Alright, I was going to PM you, but you seem to be pulling for biased mods and our shadowy hand manipulating everything just to ruin your day. I'll say this publicly.

You need to stop stirring up trouble like this. You're reporting things that ought not be reported and you're being overly dramatic when a moderator does anything against your will. So I'm just giving you a fair warning to cool your boots and take a breather. Go outside or play some Density. Come back and talk about this all civilized like. If not, I'm going to have to ban you.
I've only reported insulting posts have I not?
No. you haven't.

Nobody would know who banned who or gave a warning.
Let's say there's a mod that banned you for no reason or is warning you about things that aren't against the rules. If you know who it is you can take it up with the admin who would take it up with that mod. If this person is abusing their power or making bad calls they will be dealt with or talked to. If you have no idea who's doing it how would you be able tell the admin who it is so the problem can be dealt with?
This is already the case. If you think you've been warned or banned unfairly, just PM me. I have access to all the moderation logs and I'll be able to tell you who did what to your own account if you want to know (but only to your own account).

Spoiler
The following isn't to be taken personally. I honestly don't think any members of this site are bad, the worst I'd describe someone is misguided.

Moderating specific members is horrible.

That system needs to get removed, ASAP, and I won't support the moderation if it continues. Ban the user if they get out of hand. It's a good idea on paper but it leaves so much room for more anger and bias it's not even funny.

Yeah, I get it's to try and stop inflammatory posts that cause pages of stupid internet drama, but I don't support censorship. If this site is so shitty that one idiotic response causes a hoard the mods can't handle then:

A) The moderation is completely ineffective, since clearly people don't care enough to watch what they post

or

B) This site has become such a circle jerk that it isn't going to survive long anyway.

As someone who isn't involved in any of this crapfest:

The drama needs to be stopped. This is the first time I've had issues with it so I'm not going to go crazy. But if this spirals out of control again I'm positive this site will die.

I feel that this recent incident was handled correctly in regards to the new rules.

I'm probably going to regret this, but I'm unhappy with the the lack of foresight. It should have been obvious that certain people in certain positions would stir trouble.

Anyone, not to brown nose, but promoting you was probably the best reaction to the recent events. It shows I can at least trust this site to stick together a little longer.

Overall the increased popularity of the site was incredibly bad timing, combined with Anarchy weekend I think a lot of new members were exposed to less than ideal conditions.

Moderation Bias should no longer be an issue, if it becomes a popular complaint again I hope more strict actions are taken.

As a final note, I do support temporary posting restrictions, but only in emergencies (when there is too much going on for the moderation team to handle and they need time to sort through posts). That being said, temporary restrictions shouldn't last a noticeably long period, and I'd only use them to not anger a member with a ban that was placed before fully understanding a situation.
The warning system was put in place for minor offenses that, originally, would call for a temporary ban. In order from least to greatest restrictions, it goes watched >> moderated >> muted. All warnings decay over time, slipping down through the statuses until it reaches 0%, or non-moderated status.

It's not our intention to censor users here in terms of restricting what they can say; the practice is done to keep someone who obviously won't abide by verbal warnings from flooding the forum with rule-breaking posts. If a moderated individual's post isn't breaking any rules, then it will be approved.

Since we have so many members who can approve a post (4 monitors, 5 ninjas, and myself) it's extremely unlikely that someone's post will be held back just because someone doesn't like it. It's only going to be rejected if it breaks the rules (and Ninjas are the only ones who can reject a post).

This is the reason I tried to make everything look similar to B.old without actually stealing from it (like the thread icons). I don't want to get sued, yo.
But Bungie hasn't trademarked the Septagon, right?
Septagon is an uncommon name for Heptagon, which is a geometrical shape. I doubt very much they could sue us for using that. And even so, it's not even spelled the same way (Sep7agon).

Do you not realize how fracked up it is that some members want to be able to insult other people who post here?

Yeah, we're cleaning up a bit and some of your normal posting habits will have to change if you regularly jab other users, but this is hardly about "feelings." It's just a shitty way to behave in a community, and if we didn't nip this in the bud right now, then in a few months the entire forum would dissolve into Anarchy.

I think I am done posting for a while. The new rules have turned a few people into even bigger assholes. I am not ruining this place by wanting the rude shit to stop, and the mods are not ruining it by creating new rules, the people who want to continually be assholes to other people are ruining it.
Well I think it's safe to say that the introduction of these new rules went a tad rougher than planned.
Understatement.

I like the design of it and I disagree with putting less focus on it; this is for an unapproved post, after all. It needs to stand out.

These kinds of posts should carry a "moderated" badge under the avatar as well, which I think you already showed off.
