Yeah, you're supposed to love all of these happy monsters (even though they attack you) and spare them instead of being a bad person by killing them for the XP. It's meant to deconstruct the RPG trope of killing all the monsters that you can, but just comes across as so preachy and condescending.

The fact that almost all the characters are insufferable doesn't help things.

Not generally, but it gives you an indication of the type of people who enjoy it.

It's inspired by gameplay from the Earthbound/Mother games, and it's a fairly decent game in my opinion.

But the community/fanbase really is awful. Not as bad as FNaF, but still pretty bad.

Well the vibes I'm getting from this thread are that Undertale is one of those games that tries way too hard to push it's agenda and that the people who enjoy it are Tumblrites. Therefore, I'm not going to bother with it because I've never really liked games that are overly preachy, and Tumblrinas tend to love shit like that.

I haven't actually played it, but from what I've seen yes, the themes and gameplay/story are tightly integrated, so its message permeates many aspects of the game. It would not be nearly as good without that kind of tight integration from a design perspective. I think there's something in Undertale for everyone who likes more emotional substance from their games, but without playing it for myself I don't really know. Maybe I'll play and review it one of these days.

That's what happens when you have a really good idea for a game on the mechanic side of things, but everything story/plot related is just SJW-bait. Another good example is Life Is Strange.

Life Is Strange is hella fun to just play and not take seriously, though

It's a fun cheap game to play. Just ignore the fanbase or any exterior factors picking the game apart. I think you'd like it if you came in with that. The ost is really nice I think as well.

You don't "have" to love the monsters at all. You can, but you can also kill everything, or anything in between.

I'd even argue that the "bad" playthrough is more interesting just because of what it's trying to do

for a game that comes off as innocent and silly and funny, it gets insanely dark and actually creepy.

I'd say give it a shot. It was easily one of the best games I played last year (or maybe ever) since it came out of nowhere for me and was a nice change up for a lot of things.
