It's a sequel, doesn't act like it in a lot of ways tho. It did improve on some gameplay mechanics though so it's worth checking out if you like the SMT formula.

An arcade bar I was a regular at pre-lockdown is closing down soon. It’s the big sad but the owners gifted me their Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2 cabinet. It’s got a few issues to fix (occasionally freezing on startup or overheating and crashing during use) but I’m actually lost for words at the gesture itself. I imagine even in that condition it wouldn’t be cheap, being a full racing cabinet and all. Gonna fix it up and play the shit out of it. I’ve had so much fun playing it at the bar already.

Because I'm pretty "satisfied" with my collections at this point (although "satisfied" in quotation marks, because I obviously won't be truly satisfied until I've collected every last game on the fucking planet), I'm going to shift my focus towards collecting games released in the year I was born, since I'd like to play as many of those as I reasonably can. Mostly because I'm obsessed, but also because it'll probably make some interesting YouTube content some day.

Over the past month, I made a collage of all the stuff from 1995 that I'm interested in. It has 400 games on it, and I'm interested in playing ALL OF THEM. That's a lot of games, though—probably more than I've ever played in my life—so for the time being, I decided it would be best to narrow it down to about 50. This works out anyway, because the original image is 20 whole megabytes, which is woefully too big for Imgur's tight ass, and I don't know where else to upload it.



Japanese and other foreign language games were accounted for (such as Clock Tower and the original Trials of Mana), because I think it would be a pity to miss out on some kick-ass game just because I can't speak the language. I figure there's gotta be fan translations for the majority of games released in this era anyway, so it's no sweat to me including them.

This chart was created after painstakingly sifting through 15+ game libraries in order to check out what each and every system had to offer. Frustratingly, there's no good video game database on the Internet that catalogues every single game, so if you want a definitive and comprehensive list of games put out in a specific year, you pretty much have to do your own research—and that I did. I even scanned through the fucking CD-i, which sucked ass—and if someone had only warned me just how much shovelware they put on the Amiga, I probably would've skipped that one.

If any of you happen to know any cool games from 1995, let me know if I'm missing anything, because I'm certainly not going to stop after this one batch here.

PAL AUS prices are bad but christ

Its one of the most expensive N64 games you can get in the PAL region. It had a limited run and only was release in AU. Meanwhile the same exact game in the US can be had for as little as 20 bucks.

The five games at the top of this list were things I've been trying to hunt down for ages—StarTropics and Bubble Bobble because they're good games, and the other three because they're all classic games from 1987, which is old as fuck, and I've always wanted to collect all of the oldest ones from the '80s. We only need 43 more before we can say we own the entire '80s collection (although there's one in particular—Stadium Events—that we'll never get).

Taboo: The Sixth Sense is neat because it's not a game, but a tarot card simulator. It's supposed to read your future or something, and I guess there's urban legends about it predicting people's murders, or some shit like that? So that's fun.

Iron Tank is interesting in that it's actually a sequel to a game called TNK III, which marked the debut of Ralf Jones, who is one of the Ikari Warriors, who would later go on to star in series like Metal Slug and The King of Fighters. I've always appreciated how basically every SNK game ever is part of a shared universe. I think that's super cool.

M.C. Kids and Spot: The Video Game complete the "corporate food industry" trilogy, as it were, since I've had Yo! Noid in the collection for a very long time. I don't believe there's any more of these to get, so I think I have them all now. These games are sponsored by McDonald's, 7-Up, and Domino's respectively, which is pretty funny. Unfortunately, the cartridge for M.C. Kids is pretty fucked up around where the PCB is. The PCB itself appears to be fine, but it's exposed and difficult to insert, so I'm gonna have to figure out how to replace the casing... but unfortunately, it's broken along the label side, so it'll be difficult to find a solution that keeps the label intact.

You'd never guess the most valuable game in this batch: it's Athletic World. Similar to World Class Track Meet, this is one of those track & field games that requires you to have a peripheral known as the Power Pad. It's basically a DDR pad that produces controller inputs by stepping on it. There's only a handful of games that require it, and it's certainly an interesting relic of technology, but it's not actually why this particular game is valuable.

Really, it's just because of the label. If you have a loose Athletic World cartridge, and it doesn't say the words "Family Fun Fitness" (FFF) on the cover, then the game is only gonna go for about $10. If you do have that label, however, the game shoots up to about $85 loose... and the one we picked up just so happens to have the FFF label, making it the second most valuable NES game in our collection (behind Stack-Up, still valued at about $100 loose).

I don't even think the poor guy who sold it to us even realized, but that's the game. Gotta be on top of that shit.

Weird to hear it. Halfwise what I'd've imagined but not what I'd expect. I guess to make things slightly more on topic with collecting, did you every try out any of the other souls games?

I do own every Souls game, but besides DaS, I've only ever tried DaS2 for about ten minutes before my body viscerally rejected it. I found it revolting. It was like waking up to find all my possessions swapped for replicas with slight imperfections, and it was just the most off-putting experience. I'd like to give it another shot eventually, but yeah. Bad first impression.

Not expecting a response Verb. By my own rules, if I had a friend who did to me what I did to you guys, the only words I'd say were to leave me be and not speak. Guardian to my niece now, only person who can help my sister. My rules dictate that I need to be very careful who I let into my life because it will affect them. So, understandable if nobody here would say a peep to me. That, and people need to process things.

Back to the tracks. Admittedly jarring, yeah. It's the black sheep of the series. But I think people shit on it just a bit too much. It tried some unique things at least. I'l always praise a dev for trying something new even if it doesn't exactly work. New or different denotes risk. It's not easy to take risks. Different studio too I believe, the B team.

i see where you're coming from, but imo that only makes having a full physical collection of video games sound even cooler, just because less and less people are going to be able to say that they even have one

i wouldn't collect figurines personally, just because they don't really have much in the way of functionality besides looking cool on your desk—i've considered collecting amiibos, however, because they actually do have in-game functionality, but then it becomes an issue if figuring out where to store or display them (on top of being mad expensive)

Okay, so I finally have Turok 3... Crisis averted.

That and seven more titles for the N64 library, nine more for the NES library, and nine for the SNES library—all while still keeping within my budget, somehow, with the caveat that none of the games are particularly notable, with the exception of Turok 3 and Street Fighter 2010 for the NES, which I'm pretty fucking stoked about.



Anyone who has seen its AVGN episode would know that, while it was made by Capcom, has the Street Fighter branding, and even has a protagonist named Ken, it actually has fuck all to do with the Street Fighter franchise—it's just another generic and notoriously difficult action-based platformer in the vein of Ninja Gaiden with a sci-fi twinge. I'm pretty sure they just called it Street Fighter so that more people would buy it, or something—similar to Contra Force. It might not be the greatest game, or anything, but I do consider to be a pretty funny historical gem, if nothing else, so I'm proud to own it.

This and the other eight games bring the NES total from 56% to 57%... slowly trucking along on that one. The SNES collection slowly trails behind at 21%—but at least we broke the 20% barrier with this haul.

Most excitingly, for N64, I'm presently just two games shy of having 70%. I went ahead and ordered a copy of Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage on Amazon, because of an issue I have with my custom end labels. They come in these regular-sized sheets, as you'd expect, but I guess they had to push these six leftover names on a very small and easy-to-lose sliver of paper—and I've used all but one of them. There's just one goddamn sticker left. And because it's for a somewhat rare yet inexpensive game anyway, I decided to just order it. That'll bring me ever closer to 70%, and I won't have to keep track of that fucking sliver anymore.

Aidyn Chronicles also happens to be among the last ten games made for the system, owing to its rarity. It's one of a very small number of traditional RPGs made for the system, too.

Of the 90 games I have left to purchase, 42 of them fall under the sports/racing category—and of those games, only 10 of them are worth $40 or more. After Aidyn Chronicles gets delivered, if I get 30 of the cheapest sports/racing games, I'll be up to 80%, which will be very awesome. I can practically feel the breeze from the top of this mountain, and I can't wait to reach it.

Once I get my hands on my current most-coveted prizes—Banjo-Tooie and Harvest Moon 64—I'm not sure what my next ones will be. A lot of the remaining stuff I really wanna get—like Snowboard Kids 1 and 2, as well as the Mystical Ninja games—are pretty goddamn pricey. And when it comes to stuff like Ogre Battle, forget about it. It goes for around $80, which is well beyond reason, so if it comes down to it, I may have to settle for the virtual console on that one.

But I don't really collect games. I collect merchandise more than actual physical copies of games.
