They also had Resident Evil 2, Starcraft, and WWF No Mercy on display, but they were asking a bit too much for those
Picked up Resident Evil 2 (64) and WWF No Mercy today. Pretty happy, even though it gave my wallet a black eye.

Seems like someone else bought Starcraft 64, though. Sucks.

Looks like loose Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness cartridges just shot up in value over the past couple months to about $85, newly making it the most valuable game in my N64 collection, which is pretty cool. That's a game lent to me from my cousin well before I started seriously collecting, and it's a neat game. Still can't find the other Castlevania 64 game, though.

The most valuable game in the NES collection is a loose Stack Up cartridge, valued at ~$95. This has been part of my dad's collection since I was a child, so to think that we haven't found anything cooler despite actively searching for rare games is kind of insane to me. Even our golden Zelda II CIB w/ manual is worth $10 less.

The game itself is useless without R.O.B, and we don't even have one, despite the fact that it was a pack-in peripheral. I cannot wrap my head around why this game is considered so valuable. Does it just come down to rarity?

don't really got the money to be spending on no games for a while, but the guy who normally hooks me up with retro stuff messaged me yesterday showing me some pretty cool shit—including the other castlevania 64 game which i don't have, and most surprisingly, a loose cartridge of Power Blade 2 for the NES

this game is worth about ~$430, and is among the top 10 most valuable games for the system

i hope nobody tells him

It's a sequel, doesn't act like it in a lot of ways tho. It did improve on some gameplay mechanics though so it's worth checking out if you like the SMT formula.

An arcade bar I was a regular at pre-lockdown is closing down soon. It’s the big sad but the owners gifted me their Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2 cabinet. It’s got a few issues to fix (occasionally freezing on startup or overheating and crashing during use) but I’m actually lost for words at the gesture itself. I imagine even in that condition it wouldn’t be cheap, being a full racing cabinet and all. Gonna fix it up and play the shit out of it. I’ve had so much fun playing it at the bar already.

Dad came through on those N64 games, so I can cross one of these off now:

- Castlevania (fucking finally)
- Mortal Kombat Trilogy
- Tetrisphere
- Rat Attack!

as well as an Advanced D&D game for NES called Pool of Radiance, which i believe is the first one out of four

Mortal Kombat Trilogy is also cool, because it's among the first eight games released in the first year of the system's life in the US. These games include Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Wave Race 64, Killer Instinct Gold, Cruis'n USA, and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. I have all of these games except for one now: Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey, which should be easy enough to find. Overall, this brings my total to 56% of the library.

Because I'm pretty "satisfied" with my collections at this point (although "satisfied" in quotation marks, because I obviously won't be truly satisfied until I've collected every last game on the fucking planet), I'm going to shift my focus towards collecting games released in the year I was born, since I'd like to play as many of those as I reasonably can. Mostly because I'm obsessed, but also because it'll probably make some interesting YouTube content some day.

Over the past month, I made a collage of all the stuff from 1995 that I'm interested in. It has 400 games on it, and I'm interested in playing ALL OF THEM. That's a lot of games, though—probably more than I've ever played in my life—so for the time being, I decided it would be best to narrow it down to about 50. This works out anyway, because the original image is 20 whole megabytes, which is woefully too big for Imgur's tight ass, and I don't know where else to upload it.

Japanese and other foreign language games were accounted for (such as Clock Tower and the original Trials of Mana), because I think it would be a pity to miss out on some kick-ass game just because I can't speak the language. I figure there's gotta be fan translations for the majority of games released in this era anyway, so it's no sweat to me including them.

This chart was created after painstakingly sifting through 15+ game libraries in order to check out what each and every system had to offer. Frustratingly, there's no good video game database on the Internet that catalogues every single game, so if you want a definitive and comprehensive list of games put out in a specific year, you pretty much have to do your own research—and that I did. I even scanned through the fucking CD-i, which sucked ass—and if someone had only warned me just how much shovelware they put on the Amiga, I probably would've skipped that one.

If any of you happen to know any cool games from 1995, let me know if I'm missing anything, because I'm certainly not going to stop after this one batch here.

ive only ever played 2 of those games, dkc2 and dkl

i have some pretty fond memories of dkc2, as my mom liked to play it. it's bizarre to think my mom used to play video games, but i remember when she took the super nintendo out of the cabinet, i dropped whatever i was doing to watch her

since that was 4 years before i was born, i dont know many games from 1995 so i cant be of much help there

Snag yourself a bargain, boys: https://www.ebay.ie/itm/Starcraft-64-Nintendo-64-N64-AUS-PAL-RARE-COMPLETE-BOXED-CIB-Australian-Version/154072054928?hash=item23df68fc90:g:AzoAAOSwfTpfUP9b
PAL AUS prices are bad but christ
Its one of the most expensive N64 games you can get in the PAL region. It had a limited run and only was release in AU. Meanwhile the same exact game in the US can be had for as little as 20 bucks.

NES VC games that are worth picking up when the Wii U/3DS e-shops inevitably close down in the probably near future:

might make charts for the other libraries as well, but this was a lot of work for nobody in particular so i might not

only metric here is "how hard would it be to pick this game up assuming it never becomes accessible again," assuming you still care about playing games legitimately, so anything that's widely available through stuff like nintendo switch online, or whatever random collections have come out recently, was not factored into this—especially if it's cheap, sucks, or has no novelty

so if you miss these games, you've probably lost your chance for a good while if not forever

tl;dr get earthbound beginnings

Pretty good NES haul:

StarTropics
Bubble Bobble
Lode Runner
Mighty Bomb Jack
Athena
Taboo: The Sixth Sense
Werewolf: The Last Warrior
Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll
Castle of Dragon
Pipe Dream
Iron Tank: The Invasion of Normandy
Ultimate Air Combat
F-15 Strike Eagle
Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing
Bandai Golf: Challenge Pebble Beach
Athletic World
Super Team Games
M.C. Kids
Spot: The Video Game
Mad Max
Jeopardy! Junior Edition
Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular
The Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout
Sesame Street: Big Bird's Hide & Speak
Fisher-Price: Perfect Fit
...and some weird unlicensed game called Impossible Mission II.

The five games at the top of this list were things I've been trying to hunt down for ages—StarTropics and Bubble Bobble because they're good games, and the other three because they're all classic games from 1987, which is old as fuck, and I've always wanted to collect all of the oldest ones from the '80s. We only need 43 more before we can say we own the entire '80s collection (although there's one in particular—Stadium Events—that we'll never get).

Taboo: The Sixth Sense is neat because it's not a game, but a tarot card simulator. It's supposed to read your future or something, and I guess there's urban legends about it predicting people's murders, or some shit like that? So that's fun.

Iron Tank is interesting in that it's actually a sequel to a game called TNK III, which marked the debut of Ralf Jones, who is one of the Ikari Warriors, who would later go on to star in series like Metal Slug and The King of Fighters. I've always appreciated how basically every SNK game ever is part of a shared universe. I think that's super cool.

M.C. Kids and Spot: The Video Game complete the "corporate food industry" trilogy, as it were, since I've had Yo! Noid in the collection for a very long time. I don't believe there's any more of these to get, so I think I have them all now. These games are sponsored by McDonald's, 7-Up, and Domino's respectively, which is pretty funny. Unfortunately, the cartridge for M.C. Kids is pretty fucked up around where the PCB is. The PCB itself appears to be fine, but it's exposed and difficult to insert, so I'm gonna have to figure out how to replace the casing... but unfortunately, it's broken along the label side, so it'll be difficult to find a solution that keeps the label intact.

You'd never guess the most valuable game in this batch: it's Athletic World. Similar to World Class Track Meet, this is one of those track & field games that requires you to have a peripheral known as the Power Pad. It's basically a DDR pad that produces controller inputs by stepping on it. There's only a handful of games that require it, and it's certainly an interesting relic of technology, but it's not actually why this particular game is valuable.

Really, it's just because of the label. If you have a loose Athletic World cartridge, and it doesn't say the words "Family Fun Fitness" (FFF) on the cover, then the game is only gonna go for about $10. If you do have that label, however, the game shoots up to about $85 loose... and the one we picked up just so happens to have the FFF label, making it the second most valuable NES game in our collection (behind Stack-Up, still valued at about $100 loose).

I don't even think the poor guy who sold it to us even realized, but that's the game. Gotta be on top of that shit.

From the same guy, we just added ten N64s:

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko
Mortal Kombat 4
Jeopardy!
The New Tetris
Penny Racers
Top Gear Overdrive
Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey
NBA Courtside 2 Featuring Kobe Bryant
Bottom of the 9th

178/296 (just over 60%); to get 2/3 of the library, we just need precisely 20 more games

The original Turok has been a bug up my ass for a long time, so I'm delighted to finally have it. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil in particular has been in the collection since before we started collecting—it was literally among the first goddamn handful of games we've had—and now we have the entire series. Given that I refuse to play games out of sequential order, this has been a long time coming.

The Gex games are kind of annoying in that the only other Gex game for the N64—Enter the Gecko—is actually supposed to be called Gex 2, but because of that dumbass "64" titling gimmick, one might mistake it for the first game in the series. The real first game in the series, simply titled Gex, was originally for the 3DO and never got ported to the 64. As it happens, though, it's a 1995 release, which gives me two reasons to pick it up... but probably for the PlayStation, or something, because fuck the 3DO lmao.

Jeopardy! has some increased sentimental value for obvious reasons, and I've always loved the game show anyway, so I was happy to pick this one up at last. To pay respects to my man Trebek, I playtested this game first, and I'm not even joking—four out of the six categories in the first round of my first game were the following: History, World History, American History, and Ancient History. I guess they were still figuring out how to balance these in the '90s.

Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey is an unassuming sports game, it happens to be the final piece to the 1996 collection we've been trying to complete. That is to say, we now own all ten of the first games released for the system during its inaugural year in the market (sans Japanese exclusives, of course): Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Wave Race 64, Mario Kart 64, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Killer Instinct Gold, Cruis'n USA, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, International Superstar Soccer 64, and this one. I, for one, think that's pretty cool. In order to complete the 1997 collection, we'll still need about ten more games, but I need to double-check the release dates.

Mortal Kombat 4 is the most valuable game in this batch, but nothing too crazy—about $24 loose.

Here's an update of that chart I posted before:
Spoiler

And just to make it known: Harvest Moon 64 and Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber are both available on the Wii U Virtual Console for $9.99 for as long as the service remains available, which shouldn't be for too much longer now. I imagine it'll probably get shut down very soon, so it's worth considering picking these two games up in particular, because they're kind of rare and expensive to get legitimate cartridges of. The former is worth about $45 loose, and the latter is worth about $75 loose.

Obviously, having the real cartridges is way cooler, but saving money on a game you'll otherwise never be able to play legitimately is pretty cool, too.

What kind of monster puts up fifteen videos on youtube and shuts them out to the public. Reading through the dark souls journey, since I've the time and I'm not motivated for much else right now. Watched the last video with Gwyn. Opening made my stomach crawl for reasons. Great parry chains on Gwyn. Props to playing risky with PW too. I don't think I'd ever heard your voice before now. Weird to hear it. Halfwise what I'd've imagined but not what I'd expect. I guess to make things slightly more on topic with collecting, did you every try out any of the other souls games?

I do own every Souls game, but besides DaS, I've only ever tried DaS2 for about ten minutes before my body viscerally rejected it. I found it revolting. It was like waking up to find all my possessions swapped for replicas with slight imperfections, and it was just the most off-putting experience. I'd like to give it another shot eventually, but yeah. Bad first impression.

I believe it was you who told me to stick it out with the first game, though, when I was still expressing my grievances with the multiplayer and such (which I still loathe). I appreciate that, because now it's one of my favorite games of all time, even if it's starting to fall a little out of favor with the younger generation these days.

Sorry for not responding to your (multiple) other posts btw. I'm not ignoring them; I'll respond as soon as I can.

Not expecting a response Verb. By my own rules, if I had a friend who did to me what I did to you guys, the only words I'd say were to leave me be and not speak. Guardian to my niece now, only person who can help my sister. My rules dictate that I need to be very careful who I let into my life because it will affect them. So, understandable if nobody here would say a peep to me. That, and people need to process things.

Back to the tracks. Admittedly jarring, yeah. It's the black sheep of the series. But I think people shit on it just a bit too much. It tried some unique things at least. I'l always praise a dev for trying something new even if it doesn't exactly work. New or different denotes risk. It's not easy to take risks. Different studio too I believe, the B team.

Acquired some custom end labels for my N64 carts, since they're notorious for their blank spines, and in the process, I made a harrowing discovery: I don't actually have a copy of Turok 3. In its place, I found Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, which I never knew I had in my collection until I saw it.

YouTube

...Yeah, THAT Hercules. "Wait a minute... This isn't Turok 3..."

Very unfortunate. Turok 3 is rather pricey, and I'd rather just own it like I thought I did rather than shell out $35 that I don't currently have. It's possible that I mistook the spin-off game Rage Wars for the third installment, but I'm usually pretty meticulous about subtitles... so it must've been some other error.

My collector's edition of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light came in today. Pretty nice package, but I literally never buy these things, so I don't really know if it's a "good" CE or not. The replica NES cartridge will look really nice with the rest of them, though, and I'm happy with the 200+ page art book as well. Even the packaging stuff you're expected to thrown away had some neat designs on it.

The physical manual is written and designed like an old-school NES manual would be, which is fantastic, and in true NES game style, it's required reading if you want to understand the game and haven't played FE before (like me). I only did the first battle, but I like it so far. I'm sure a lot of these 30-year-old old mechanics would make modern FE fans wince, though.

i see where you're coming from, but imo that only makes having a full physical collection of video games sound even cooler, just because less and less people are going to be able to say that they even have one

i wouldn't collect figurines personally, just because they don't really have much in the way of functionality besides looking cool on your desk—i've considered collecting amiibos, however, because they actually do have in-game functionality, but then it becomes an issue if figuring out where to store or display them (on top of being mad expensive)

never been a poster person either, but maybe that's because i live in an attic

Good N64 progress. Tried to post this earlier, but something fucked up and it got deleted, which sucks, because I had little blurbs for every single game written up, and I really don't feel like starting from scratch, so whatever.

All-Star Baseball 2000
Mischief Makers
NFL QB Club 2001
Mia Hamm Soccer 64
Fighters Destiny
Nightmare Creatures
Polaris SnoCross
Wetrix
Forsaken 64
Tigger's Honey Hunt
Chopper Attack
Mace: The Dark Age
Vigilante 8
Knife Edge: Nose Gunner
Lode Runner 3-D
Gex 64: Enter the Gecko
Aero Fighters Assault
NBA Jam 99
Top Gear Rally

197/296. That leaves less than 100 games to collect, and if I get just one more, I'll be able to say that I own just over two thirds of the entire library, which is pretty awesome. Mischief Makers and Gex 64 are the biggest prizes here, and with the addition of All-Star Baseball 2000, I happen to own all eight baseball games released for the system. So that's a thing.

I'll have to update my 3x3 of most-wanteds soon, but I'm honestly starting to run out of stuff. I really just need Banjo-Tooie and Turok 3, and I'll be pretty happy.

Okay, so I finally have Turok 3... Crisis averted.

That and seven more titles for the N64 library, nine more for the NES library, and nine for the SNES library—all while still keeping within my budget, somehow, with the caveat that none of the games are particularly notable, with the exception of Turok 3 and Street Fighter 2010 for the NES, which I'm pretty fucking stoked about.

Anyone who has seen its AVGN episode would know that, while it was made by Capcom, has the Street Fighter branding, and even has a protagonist named Ken, it actually has fuck all to do with the Street Fighter franchise—it's just another generic and notoriously difficult action-based platformer in the vein of Ninja Gaiden with a sci-fi twinge. I'm pretty sure they just called it Street Fighter so that more people would buy it, or something—similar to Contra Force. It might not be the greatest game, or anything, but I do consider to be a pretty funny historical gem, if nothing else, so I'm proud to own it.

This and the other eight games bring the NES total from 56% to 57%... slowly trucking along on that one. The SNES collection slowly trails behind at 21%—but at least we broke the 20% barrier with this haul.

Most excitingly, for N64, I'm presently just two games shy of having 70%. I went ahead and ordered a copy of Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage on Amazon, because of an issue I have with my custom end labels. They come in these regular-sized sheets, as you'd expect, but I guess they had to push these six leftover names on a very small and easy-to-lose sliver of paper—and I've used all but one of them. There's just one goddamn sticker left. And because it's for a somewhat rare yet inexpensive game anyway, I decided to just order it. That'll bring me ever closer to 70%, and I won't have to keep track of that fucking sliver anymore.

Aidyn Chronicles also happens to be among the last ten games made for the system, owing to its rarity. It's one of a very small number of traditional RPGs made for the system, too.

Of the 90 games I have left to purchase, 42 of them fall under the sports/racing category—and of those games, only 10 of them are worth $40 or more. After Aidyn Chronicles gets delivered, if I get 30 of the cheapest sports/racing games, I'll be up to 80%, which will be very awesome. I can practically feel the breeze from the top of this mountain, and I can't wait to reach it.

Once I get my hands on my current most-coveted prizes—Banjo-Tooie and Harvest Moon 64—I'm not sure what my next ones will be. A lot of the remaining stuff I really wanna get—like Snowboard Kids 1 and 2, as well as the Mystical Ninja games—are pretty goddamn pricey. And when it comes to stuff like Ogre Battle, forget about it. It goes for around $80, which is well beyond reason, so if it comes down to it, I may have to settle for the virtual console on that one.

But I don't really collect games. I collect merchandise more than actual physical copies of games.
