YouTube has confirmed the forthcoming launch of a monthly subscription option that will let users bypass the ads that normally run in front of videos.

Word of the new service came to light earlier today, when Bloomberg reported on an email sent to video creators that said, "By creating a new paid offering, we'll generate a new source of revenue that will supplement your fast growing advertising service." Google later confirmed that the report was legitimate, and that revenues would be shared.
"While we can't comment on ongoing discussions, giving fans more choice to enjoy the content they love and creators more opportunity to earn revenue are always amongst our top priorities," it said in a statement.

The subscription fee hasn't been set and there's no word on when the new service option will be rolled out. The notification of the coming change was sent out to content creators in order to give them sufficient time to review and agree to changes in their terms of agreement.

Personally I support the channels I enjoy via direct donations.  With that and the fact that you can just use AdBlock or uBlock to get rid of ads, will anyone here be using this?

AdBlock does cause huge problems for content creators.  For people whose livelihoods rely on ad revenue (a lot of fucking people) having a huge chunk of that potential revenue washed away because someone doesn't want to watch a 30-second ad probably hurts.

That said, many channels are now incorporating ads into the videos themselves.  Like Roosterteeth's or LinusTechTips' endorsement of products at the beginning of their shows.  I think we'll see a transition to that type of advertising exclusively in the coming years.

I think YouTube makes more than enough money for people using adblock to not be much of an issue.

It's not about YouTube--it's about the individual content creators.

I don't understand the point for paying for a service that skips 5-30 second long ads. I've been watching them for the last 6 years. I doubt that's going to change.

Ads are pretty annoying and invasive when you're wanting to watch what you clicked on.

No, I'd rather provide them with as much revenue as possible. Ads are the least annoying thing ever. They're not even intrusive. YouTube has made them skippable for the past three or four years.

Can't really say I care about supporting every video that has ads. And sure the ones that you can skip are nice, but they're not all skippable.

Good for you if you think they're not annoying, but honestly I as well as others find most pretty fucking obnoxious.
