why
Being a specialist is more appealing in this society than just general knowledge

I already have general knowledge

Specialist>Jack of all Trades

The latter is practically useless and dumb.

not really

a specialist doesn't have the versatility of a jack of all trades.

Still, what kind of job can you get by knowing a little about a subject? There's no job where you have to be a jack of all trades, there are countless where you have to be a specialist.

well sure but there's more to life than a job

a jack of all trades is far more interesting from a social aspect, and even in terms of just things you can do on your own.

A jack of all trades has merely surface level versatility. Practically useless.

sometimes surface level versatility is all you need

I'd rather be useful in the industrial world than useful at being interesting at a party, tbh

Not in most situations.

knowing a little about a lot by definition would be more useful in most situations than specialisation

i think you undervalue the utility of being interesting

as much as it sucks a lot of the time, the likable person gets the job. not the one best qualified.

Between two similarly-qualified people, sure. But if I'm applying to be a pharmacist, and I have an overflowing amount of knowledge on the subject, I'm not going to miss the job because the next guy in line can tell a story about the time he fixed a rotary phone.

no but you can't be a pharmacist without specialised training, anyway so . . .

It's usually never applicable because you need a specialist, or a specialist is at least preferred.

i wouldn't agree with that. every day situations and problems rarely need a specialist to be solved. the bigger problems sure.

Exactly. And the thread is about whether I would want to be a specialist or a jack of all trades....

Specialize

The saying is Jack of all trades master of none

It's appealing to be a little good at everything but it really isn't practical at all. Nothing more than mental masturbation, I say this as someone who used to want to be the guy who knew a little about a lot

Specialize

The saying is Jack of all trades master of none

Actually, the phrase is

"Jack-of-all-trades, madter of none...

but better still than master of one."

little-known fact

I think I'd like to specialize in one thing, but I definitely see the appeal of wanting to just know a bit about everything.

You either die a hero or live long enough to become Mythic..
Honestly in life you can pick up on what you need to know about other things pretty quickly.

Delving into a certain field takes YEARS. So yeah i'll skip the 4+ years of just learning one thing

AKA, A lot about a little

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Specialist.

At least with knowledge of one topic I can make use of it.

E.g. Electrician or Chef over... basic knowledge of how electricity works and  only a mastery of toasters.

Plus basically what Pip said. General knowledge can be gleaned from watching the Discovery Channel, while specialising takes serious effort.
