Why are autistic people made fun of so much?

It's not like they can help having autism, and being mean and hostile to people with autism doesn't significantly more harm than it does to neurotypical people. Remember, the person who faunded modern physics (well einstein replaced his theories but they still work) was autistic.

Some of them use their autism as a shield, or a get-out-of-jail-free card. You can't criticize an autistic person's behavior, because they're autistic. Doesn't matter if what they're doing is absolutely wrong--they're autistic, and that makes everything okay.

That's why people make fun of them--especially if the person happens to be "high-functioning".

The euphemism treadmill rolls on and on but people will always take the new word to describe those who are different/less able and use it as an insult/slur against those that they don't like/want to mock.
Sure it's a shitty thing to use as an insult, but that's kinda the point of insults.

I wouldn't suggest anyone gets bent out of shape over that sort of thing, but if you see someone mocking another person for having autism as opposed to acting stupidly then that's actually something you could get riled up over.

A little while ago the Spastics Society rebranded their shit to avoid kids being called spastics on the playground, they changed it to Scope and then people started using Scope-kid for a little while. It died out kinda quickly though because it doesn't really roll off the tongue.

Part of what makes "Dark humor" appealing to some people isn't the actual content of a joke, it's the nature of telling a joke about something so terrible and cruel that makes the context of the joke funny. Of course I'd never laugh at an autistic person to their face, or look down on them, but if someone makes an autism joke, it can be funny as shit.
