Teddy Roosevelt was an idealist who made a rustic public image for himself in order to save face after a series of personal disasters, and was installed as vice president by a select group of powerful men because they needed him to go away and at the time, becoming vice president was usually the end of your pineapple.

I wont refute the badass part but he certainly didn't have overcome any weaknesses, he outright failed at life and abandoned his goals to go in a radically different direction.

Dean Kamen and James Stockdale. Dean for his ingenuity in the field of robotics and inspiring a generation of kids to love science, and James Stockdale because I admire his philosophy of stoicism and think his story is incredibly compelling and inspiring.

He still wanted Communism to continue though, but he did not let it lead to violence when it wasn't what the people wanted. Most people don't know he won a Noble Peace prize.
