If you swing the way of ongoing manga, Houseki no Kuni is fantastic.

I don't think the anime would be for you; the adaptation is chock full of annoying "anime-isms" in terms of style and is CG animated too [though the last bit isn't a problem IMO]. The universe is fascinating though. The mechanics of the world deliver a coming of age plot so creatively it's jealousy inducing if you've ever tried to write a COA story.

can't say i care to start reading manga, much less ongoing ones—i enjoy the security of knowing that i'm about to jump into a completed story, and that i won't be sitting on a boat for 7 years with a bunch of other fans waiting for the next volume, and on top of that, i have enough "real" literature to catch up on before i start reading some random japanese comics

i appreciate the recommendation, though

are you recommending this because you think I in particular would like it, or are you recommending it just because you like it

Mainly the latter, but I recommended it specifically because the manga doesn't really adhere to the medium's tropes. And yeah, I can sympathize with your issues about ongoing series.

i wanted to wait until i had at least five of these, but i'll just do it now because i came close enough

evangelion: 6 -> 7, possible new AOTY for 1995 (in competition with magnetic rose)
perfect blue: 6 -> 7
princess mononoke: 4 -> 6
golden boy: 7 -> 6

evangelion is one of those shows that i want to love, but i still feel it gets bogged down by a couple bothersome anime-isms that i can't easily forgive—it's a show that gets better the more i think about it, though, and i can't say the same for pretty much anything else

perfect blue is similar in that it gets better the more i watch it

i was being pretty unfair with princess mononoke, it's probably my new favorite ghibli film now to be honest

in retrospect, my high rating for golden boy was probably a little overzealous—i feel like i should completely rearrange my 1995 list, it still has the same everything but in a completely different order (#3. GB, #2-1. MR or NGE, not sure yet)

i rewatched crybaby for the third time, and though i really really wanted to give it my first ever 9, i did wind up noticing a couple things about it that bog it down just slightly—not big enough to mention, but big enough to keep it at a higher 8 for the time being
