8/10, go see it.

On par with Gone Girl in terms of its psychological thrills.

Jason Bateman. Rebecca Hall. Joel Edgerton.

Bateman's performance was superb.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
OMG Yes
Thank you. I love those kinds of movies

I like hugs and making the world a better place. That and guns. Lots and lots of guns.
The trailer spoiled it for me. The little snippets of drama in the trailer were enough for me to put together what was going to happen in the movie.

You think so? I just sort of walked in, not knowing what it was about, not having seen any trailers. I just new it was supposed to be good, and it ended up being great. So that's unfortunate.

Just curious. What would ever count in your books to warrant a 10/10?

Ummm. For movies, I'm actually a lot more generous. When it comes to music, and especially games, I'm a lot more harsh. When it comes to film, I look for many things, but ultimately, it all just comes down to how much it entertained me.

Fight Club, Goodfellas, the Goonies, Stand By Me, the Godfather, the Dark Knight, Requiem for a Dream, and even a couple Harry Potter films are all some of my favorite movies of all time, and I'd give all of them 9/10s or 10/10s. It's rare for me to give a movie anything below a 5/10--it would have to seriously offend me on some crazy level for me to go below a 3/10.

What's most important to me:
- Likable/relatable/interesting yet flawed characters that I care about.
- An original or subversive plot that mixes genres together or breaks genre conventions.
- Interesting/pertinent themes or messages that transcend the narrative of the story.
- Clever writing. I want dialogue that's so sharp, it feels like an action scene.
- A good score or soundtrack.
- Innovative cinematography.
- Good action scenes.

In that order.
It also helps to have strong actors--they're always a pleasure to watch, but they are very low on my priorities.

There are also a lot of themes in particular that I enjoy--ones that focus on negative aspects of humanity, or life in general.
I like when common tropes are deconstructed heavily, but that doesn't mean the movie has to be dark.

The Incredibles and Chronicle are two 9/10 films that deconstruct the concept of a superhero movie.
One is a good, wholesome Pixar film. The other is an extremely dark and depressing film in the guise of a bro-comedy.
