So I just saw Aquaman, which is currently sitting at a 70% on rotten tomatoes with 107 reviews, and thought it was fucking garbage. Like I haven't seen a movie this bad in a while. I'd say it's easily a contender for worst in the DCEU for me.
Basically every single line spoken in the movie is expository dialogue, barring the comedy bits. The performances were some of the most bland I've ever seen (Jason Momoa and Nicole Kidman are the only ones that seem like they're trying). No-name actors like Black Manta were just terrible.
There were these weird shots where the camera would be directly in front of the actors face when they spoke dialogue. Willem Dafoe would have these lines where he's talking to himself and it just seemed like he was literally reading the script to the audience. I feel like I'm not even one to complain about this type of stuff usually but it felt so forced and unnatural that I could never get invested in the movie.
The critics seem to be mainly praising the visuals and "epic scale". The visuals are excessive to say the least, with way too much CG and obvious green screen that the action was really uninteresting. I wouldn't exactly call it "epic" just because there's hundreds of CG sharks and made up creatures swimming around on screen. And people are comparing this to Lord of the Rings? Kill yourselves.
It also seems to directly contradict Justice League where we literally see Aquaman go to Atlantis (which is where he lives iirc) and talk to Amber Heard about some shit I didn't pay attention to. In this movie: he's always lived on the land, has never been to Atlantis, meets Amber Heard for the first time, and then they reference Justice League as already having happened.
All in all, they need to cancel this franchise already. They don't even have a Superman or Batman anymore and it sounds like they're just planning to write around it. But I know Aquaman is going to perform decent at the box office and they'll keep this shitshow going.
Spoiler
Into the Spiderverse was pretty good though.
