i also want to be one of those guys who can troubleshoot computers at the drop of a hat

like, if a teacher is having trouble connecting his laptop to his projector for the classroom, or something
i want to be able to help him, because i'll know exactly what the problem is

'cause right now i'm not that guy, and i feel bad for it, because i feel like i should be
rofl a cs degree ain't gonna help you much with this one imo.
it's not a big deal it doesn't, just thought it might've been a perk

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
What branch of computer science? I took a course on web design last year and hated every minute of it.
could do programming i guess

my dad says i should learn CAD, though
CAD is neat.

I did a year of drafting courses in high school. After a while doing the basics on paper (basically the top part of this image)
Spoiler
we moved on to autocad and solidworks.  Neat shit.

It was pretty dumb to major in English to begin with.
yeah

learning about your passions

what a dumb thing to do
It is when you're paying a school thousands of dollars and won't make a decent living off of it. At least you changed it, but don't drop out like a lot of stem students do.

Solidworks is dank. You can make models of parts and them import them to assemble them and then animate the final design.

I recently spoke to my adviser today about my future, and I asked him where most of the Astronomy majors end up. Probably sixty percent head onto graduate school and likely perform research, but that's not really what I want to do. I might end up getting my teaching certification after I complete my BS.
thats what i wanna do babe
Awwwww sheeeeeeiiiiiitt

It really is.
If I had cared for design as much as I enjoyed actually putting things together at the the time, I'd probably have done the architectural drafting course instead of residential construction during school.

You should care. Also college is for learning so you can use your knowledge in the job force. Nobody is paying thousands and risking debt to not net a return.

which is why college should be free

college should be about getting an education for the sake of getting an education

I agree with this.

Saw the edit. If college was free, then I agree that it should be used for both job obtaining purposes and the pursuit of knowledge.

Programming is such a weird field to me. My father in law is a contracted programmer for Intel and he makes bank because he's good at it, but it's also a highly perishable skill that is rapidly being devalued by overseas labor.

So it's a fantastic skill to have, but it's also becoming very crowded.

Programming is the shit. My new job basically forced me to learn JQuery, and it's sooooo much easier and more intuitive and Javascript is. Once you learn one language, the others will come to you a lot faster, IMO.

Spoiler
Too bad many are starting to dump Jquery over more effective, efficient, and easier tools

Well then when those tools become a big deal, I'll learn those too. Now shut up and fix the damn navbar.

Fix is a generous term to what is mostly a reconstruction of the navbar.

I figured this was going to be satire. If this is serious, I would recommend not starting with C++ if possible.

My condoloences, but congrats, Verb, for at least making it that far.

I dropped outta highschool for essentially the same reasons you're not a fan of the STEM clan.

I looked at all the roads ahead of me and they were literally all shit choices that gave me no prospect of happiness or delight in their thought.

i hope you know that just because you're pursuing a CompSci major doesn't automatically guarantee you anything once you're out of college, and it's a shame that so many people have this mentality. just study what you're passionate about and let the rest fall into place.

That's the problem. We don't live in a society where doing what you're passionate about pays the bills.

Passion second, bills first.

Try as you might, you can't escape it. The only slightly better chance somebody has, is doing the whole pay the bills routine, while still juggling what they're passionate about.

If they're lucky, in the long run, their passion stands a chance of being so honed and well defined that it can instead pay the bills while staying as a passion at the same time.

well it all depends on what that person's passion is in the first place. if your passion is sitting around and masturbating all day then, well, obviously your career choices are extremely limited. however, in verby's case, there are opportunities to pay your bills with an english major, but it comes down to how much he really wants to apply himself towards paying his bills and following his passion at the same time. there are plenty of people throughout history who became successful through following their passions.

in short, you'll never know if you don't try.

I'm doing 'digital design' in college (Fancy name for computer games) and it's awesome. We're doing graphics right now, which is the field I want to do.
