There's a mechanic in my area who I took notice of recently. I've been helping him more and more because I can see that he's having a tough time. Especially this year. He doesn't have enough firewood for the winter. Nor does he have it split. So, I asked him if he wanted a hand.

He called me up a few weeks ago. And we talked a little bit. He's obviously appreciative of the fact that I stop by to give him a hand. Long story short, I don't pay for mechanical work from him.

He does it for free because of how much I've gone out of my own way to help him.

Empathy is good for trades.

Creating a well-functioning society where the quality of life is high and future generations don't have to live in fear of poverty or violence is a pretty good (and obvious) reason.

Not to mention that it's my particular empathy that keeps me going. It's probably the strongest thing of mine that keeps me up and about. If I can't do it for myself, then I can do it for others for the sake of their betterment and benefit.

If empathy was a pointless thing it would have dissappeared a long time ago.
