The cartoon introduced a lot about Venom. In the comics the symbiote didn't increase aggression, Peter just didn't want it living on him. Kind of a dick move, actually. It's just helping him, trying to be a good bodymate, and then he goes and tries to kill it with the church bells because he doesn't like how it does its shit.
