Are you on a first-name basis with any of your professors?

That's almost obnoxious. But whatever, I'm not really judging.

Almost always, with moderation
It always feels weird calling professors or teachers by their first name after using their last name for so long. Even after getting to know them well.

It would only be obnoxious if I called a ph.D "Bobby" instead of Doctor Robert Smith or whatever the fuck. But if they're chill with it, and you've known them for years, then what's the issue?

There were a few that I could have been, as in they said it was fine to but I insisted on Mr X Ms Y and the like.

Now with my professors it's the same thing, they are very laid back about it and are happy for people to speak to them on a first name basis but it doesn't feel right not to address a Doctor as Doctor or Professor as Professor.

What do you call Bobby then?

Dr. Smith, unless he's okay with Professor Smith.

The question I was really asking was if you had a good relationship with your instructors. My dad, for example, still hangs out with one of his college professors. He drinks with him, for fuck's sake. I was just wondering if anyone had similar relationships here, because I think it's kinda sweet.

Tell me about the first-name basis situation then.

Not really, I feel like I've been indoctrinated to never call my teachers/professors with their title and last name even if I know them well.

There's just this one professor who my dad has been friends with for years--he'd get invited over to watch football games and drink beer and shoot the shit--and now he teaches me in one of his courses. For someone who's been teaching for as long as he has, he's still quite young, which might explain the laid-back-ness of it, and he's just known me for the longest time.

It makes more sense to me now.

Any class that isn't a practicum of some sorts. Major classes are those where you just in auditorium with dozens or hundreds of other people just listening to the professor's lecture. You don't interact with him or her, so no one gets on a first name basis.
Right, I see. That's sort of cheating, but I know what you mean. Obviously, that's less of a, "No, I'm not" and more of a "I don't have the opportunity."

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
They encourage us to speak to them on a first name basis but I prefer to refer to them as professor

In "Gymnasiet" (age 16 to 18) I called basically all my teachers by name. There isn't really much of a tradition to call teachers by their last name in Sweden, at least not before College/University, which I cannot report of by first hand experience, since I haven't taken that level of education yet.

We knew the world would not be the same.
A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent.
I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita.
Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty
and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says,
"Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.."
I suppose we all thought that one way or another.
Only for two professors, but that's because I'm more on a friend level with them. I've never actually been in their classes, they just hang around the same center that I do.

Almost all of the comp sci department because of extracurriculars and robotics and such. I'm trying to make friends with the Math department but they're always so busy.

Not even going to try for any humanities course. It literally takes 30 minutes of waiting just to get an opportunity to ask the prof a question.

I only call them professor even if they insist on being called something else in order to dehumanize them

Yeah, it's the second. Not sure if my university is very different to your college in that aspect, but the only time we're in these smaller groups is when it's for a practicum, seminar or something similar. There's around 150 people doing what I'm doing now, so there isn't much room for up close and personal contact with the professor. You can go ask questions all you want, of course, but unless he ends up being your promotor for a thesis or phd, you're not going to get any sort of relationship with him or her.

I'm in the same boat, I have 300 people in my intermediate chem lecture. We break down into smaller groups for discussions and seminars but those are led by grad students or student volunteers
